Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 4651 to 4700, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 47 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 4601 to 4700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary [Gerald Chetwynd Talbot Lewin from 1 August 1856, then Bentham Bowring from 1 April 1858], and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 4652, 4660, 4662, 4665, 4667, 4669, 4670, 4675, 4678, 4681, 4683, 4688, 4689, 4692, 4693, 4695, and 4697 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

4660. Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner Cis Sutlej States, Camp, Dec 1858. States that the Maharajah of Puttiala in deference to the wishes of the Rajahs of Pabha and Sheend, and to the opinion of the Governor General, will not go to England until 1860. Sir J Lawrence certainly intends going home. Asks when the many vacant appointments are to be filled up. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4613
4661. Memorial of Mr E M Potter, Lucknow, who is under suspicion of writing anonymous letters to the Governor General, Dec 1858. Asks for a transfer.
4662. Letter from Major C Hervey, Assistant General Superintendent, Thuggee Department, Belgaum, Dec 1858 - Feb 1859. Asks for Lady Canning's kind interest towards his appointment as General Superintendent in succession to Sleeman. Copy of reply, he has been nominated to act in Sleeman's absence. 4664. Letter from Mr E G Birch, Civil Service, Calcutta, Dec 1858 - Jan 1859. Has been offered a post of 1000 Rupees a month in Bengal and does not wish now to transfer to the North West Provinces should his position there be inferior. 4665. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Dec 1858 - Jan 1859. Sends a letter from Captain Showers, with an account of the action at Pertabgurh. He hopes Brigadier Park will be in time to prevent the Rao Sahib reaching Gungrar, where according to the enclosed translation of a statement, the Nana was awaiting them. He believes that this is Feroze Shah's party; as Michel and Napier and Brigadier Smith are on the alert, expects that this time the enemy will not escape.
4666. Letter from Captain H K Burne, Assistant Secretary to the Government of India, Military Department, Calcutta, Dec 1858 - Jan 1859. Suggests Lieutenant Sherer of the Sylhet Light Infantry for the command of the Kookee Levy, and Assistant Superintendency of Cachar. 1 enclosure, 2 office memoranda. 4667. Letter from Mr W H Russell Ll D, Headquarters Camp, Mejiddiah, Dec 1858 - Jan 1859. About his despatches. Lord Clyde is doing well, though a fall at his age must affect him. Relates the previous day's fighting, and the inexplicable conduct of the enemy in not submitting to the generous terms offered; believes some unknown influence is instigating them, perhaps that of Mann Sing. Copy of reply, about his despatches.
4669. Letter from Mr F N Maltby, Judicial Commissioner in the Hyderabad Assigned Districts, on leave, England, Nov 1858 - Jan 1859. Asks what position the Judicial Commissioner of the assigned District is to have. Has no connection with an article in the Quarterly Review on the Assigned Districts. 4670. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore, Dec 1858 - Jan 1859. Asks for a copy of a note he had submitted on the proposed scheme of the campaign in Central India, in order that he may show to people that the campaign was not a haphazard affair. Sends a memorandum about the action at Pertabghur.

4688. Letter from Sir Robert Hamilton, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore, Dec 1858 - Jan 1859. Acknowledges receipt of the packet of pearls. The Proclamation is well known in the rebel camp and as soon as the decision in the Banda Nawab's case is known, many more rebels will leave Tantia Topi and surrender. Reports the movements of rebel and British troops in Malwa. all is tranquil, and opium is as good as ever. Many Pundits have been sent to all quarters to excite sedition, but without success.

4692. Copy of letter to Rajah Bunsput Singh, Rajah of Barra, Jan 1859. In reply to his letter asking to be permitted, in recognition of his services, to retain a certain number of weapons for his own use; he is to be allowed to keep 10 guns and 10 swords.
4693. Letter from Mr M Gubbins, Financial Commissioner for Oudh, on medical leave, Calcutta, Jan 1859. Reports his return; and asks to be considered for the office of Governor General's Agent for Central India. Wishes for an interview with the Governor General. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot hold out any prospect of Gubbins being appointed to Indore. 2 notes from Mr Muir, and 1 from the Private Secretary about the salary of a Judgeship in the Sudder.
4695. Letter from Lieutenant General the Honourable Sir J Outram, Member of the Supreme Council, Calcutta, Jan 1859. Sends two letters from Dr Ogilvie, stating that he intends to print for private circulation the entire correspondence between the Governor General and Outram about Ogilvie. Outram wishes to explain that in sending Ogilvie the correspondence, he did not anticipate such a result. He has written to Ogilvie to this effect, and will be glad to be the medium of communicating to Ogilvie any expression of the Governor General's opinion of his indiscretion. 4696. Letter from Dr J Sanderson, Garrison Surgeon, Madras, Dec 1858 - Jan 1859. Asks that Lord Canning will recommend Lord Harris to return to England in one of the Government steamers, and not in any of the Peninsular and Oriental packet steamers. Describes Lord Harris' complaint and treatment, and believes that he would run great risk of a relapse if he travelled in a packet steamer. (Letter to Dr Leckie)
