Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 4701 to 4750, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 48 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 4701 to 4800’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, [Gerald Chetwynd Talbot Lewin from 1 August 1856, then Bentham Bowring from 1 April 1858], and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 4701, 4702, 4703, 4704, 4705, 4706, 4707, 4708, 4709, 4710, 4714, 4718, 4719, 4722, 4725, 4727, 4728, 4729, 4730, 4732, 4733, 4736, 4757a, 4740, 4741, 4743, and 4750 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
4701. Letter from Major W C Erskine, Commissioner of Jubbulpore, Camp, Dumoh, Sep 1857 - Jan 1859. Believing that his letter of 31 Jul to the Governor General may have miscarried, sends a copy representing the unfitness of Brigadier Sage to retain the command of the Jubbulpore forces.
4702. Letter from Mr W Grey, Director General of Post Offices in India, Calcutta, Oct 1858. States the strong objections which exist to the Transport Train between Bombay and Indore being made over to the Post Office, suggests it would be more satisfactory to place it under a military officer directly under the orders of the Government.
4703. Letter from Colonel R Henderson, Chief Engineer Hyderabad Division, Bolarum, Dec 1857 - Dec 1858. States the inconvenience to himself and the public service by General Coffin systematically acting in opposition to him in certain matters connected with Public Works in Hyderabad, and begs that steps may be taken to end this state of affairs. 4704. Letter from Mr W B Jackson, Hyderabad, Oct 1858. Being informed that Colonel Davidson will soon vacate the Residency, brings to notice the influence Salar Jung had over Davidson, and of the ill-management of Davidson by instigation of Salar Jung, who is even distrusted by the Nizam; and states the services rendered by himself to Davidson. Asks to be appointed Resident in succession to Davidson. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4705; Governor General's Book number 1413, 1414.
4705. Letter from Mr W B Jackson, Hyderabad, Oct 1858. With reference to his letter of 27 Oct mentions an additional fact in support of his statement that Salar Jung was in complete disfavour with the Nizam. 4706. Letter from Mr G T Harvey, Commissioner of Agra, Agra, Dec 1858. Reports that a rebel force of 1500 to 2000 men crossed the Ganges at the Nokar Ghat in the Cawnpore District and came upon Mr Hume; gives particulars of the encounter in which Mr Doyle was killed. Believes the Grand Trunk Road should not be left unprotected, and that Etawah should be strengthened with 100 Europeans. Alligurh, with £45,000 worth of treasure, is inadequately defended, and Colonel Shuldham will not take warning.
4707. Letter from Mr C H Lushington, Secretary to Government of India, Financial Department Calcutta, Dec 1858. Sends a letter from Major J H Bell, applying for the permanent appointment of Mint Master at Calcutta, and refuting the assertions of 'The Englishman' that importers of bullion had suffered since his assumption of the Mint duties.
4708. Letter from Major H W Norman, Deputy Adjutant General of the Army, Camp, Kumaul, May 1857 - Dec 1858. Gives an outline of events before Delhi, and reports the death by cholera of General Answon, and the appointment of General Barnard to the command of the Delhi Field Force. (To D F Macleod).
4709. Letter from Mr E A Reade, Member of the Sudder board, Agra, Dec 1858. Sends copies of 2 telegrams (no longer enclosed) about Mr Hume's encounter with the rebels. Remarks on the future movements of the rebels.
4710. Letter from Mr J W Sherer, Magistrate of Cawnpore, Camp, Bethour, Dec 1858. Reports all quiet at Cawnpore and Baugumow. He must return to Cawnpore at once, as until his Head Clerk comes the English office cannot work.
4711. Letter from Lieutenant E D Gompertz, 1st Madras Native Infantry, Camp, Kothee, en route to Nagode, Jan 1859. Applies to be 2nd Assistant to the Rewah Agency. Copy of reply, acknowledgment. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4582
4712. Letter from Mr J Crawford, late Conductor, Public Works Department, Ghazeepore, Jan 1859. Submits copy of a letter to Lord Stanley, preparing him for a petition; asks for the return of his documents. Copy of reply, his letters will be returned without delay. 4713. Letter from Lieutenant F J H Helbert, Assistant Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Jan 1859. Applies for a post in the Central India Agency. 2 letters Copy of reply, acknowledgment .
4714. Letter from Mr F D Forsyth, Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow, Jan 1859. States that Mr Montgomery would have no objection if Mr H B Simson came to Oudh in exchange for Mr S Lushington, who is anxious to return to Bengal. Enclosed is docket number 4680, Simson's letter applying for an exchange of posts. 1/2 anna stamp. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4524, 4537, 4546, 4681, 4730.
4716. Copy of reply to Major H D Abbott, Hingolee, Jan 1859. His application has been transferred to Colonel Stuart. 15 Jan. Memorandum about this.
4717. Copy of a letter to Major C V Bowie, Government House, Calcutta, Jan 1859. Sending him a petition from Mrs Crow, and asking him to make enquiries.
4718. Letter from Sir Robert Hamilton, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore, Jan 1859. Reports the success obtained by Colonel Benson's column against the enemy, after a chase of 155 miles in 173 hours. He is afraid that Tantia may cross the Agra Road and return to Bundelcund. General Napier is at Kolarus and Feroze Shah at Shahabad. Sir Hugh Rose is now writing his despatches about Calpee, it is quite monstrous. Hamilton has sent a company of the 71st to Gonnah to help General Napier. Asks if the 72nd is to go to Gwalior and Jhansi, or to remain at Mhow.
4719. Letter from Dr R F Hutchinson, Civil Assistant Surgeon, Shahabad, Arrah, Jan 1859. Names some faithful sepoys of the late 28th Native Infantry who accompanied their commanding officer Captain Sneyd as far as Mohomdee, and there, when all hope was lost for the officers, parted at the request of the officers, as borne out by certificates. The names of the sepoys have twice been submitted to the Commander-in-Chief but no answer has been received (Letter no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, his letter has been transferred to the Military Department.
4720. Letter from Mr C K Dove, Officiating Post Master General, Calcutta, Jan 1859. Acknowledges instructions about the discontinuance of making up separate packets for the Governor General's Camp from 15 Jan; asks how letters addressed to His Lordship and Staff and the Secretary's Office are to be disposed of after 17 Jan. Copy of reply, the Governor General will leave Allahabad on 18 Jan so the post of 15 Jan from Calcutta should be sent to Allahabad. On 19 Jan the Governor General will be at Benares, leaving the same day. These dates are certain. Following Benares, he will go to Sherghotty and Burhee. The Governor General will be accompanied by the Military Secretary, the Private Secretary, Dr Leckie, Major Bouverie and the Foreign Secretary. Lady Canning will leave Allahabad on 15 Jan accompanied by Mrs Stuart, Captain Stanley and Captain Baring. She will arrive in Calcutta on 19 Jan.
4721. Letter from Mr C R Shaw, Assistant Commissioner, Fyzabad, Jan 1859. Asks for promotion. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, the recommendation should come through the Chief Commissioner.
4722. Letter from S L Blanchard Esquire Editor of the 'New Times' newspaper, Allahabad, Jan 1859. Asking for official Government information, telegrams for the 'New Times', the first number of which will appear in a few days. Copy. Copy of order by the Governor General granting this request.
4723. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government of India with the Governor General, Allahabad, Jan 1859. Sends a copy of a letter from Mr Beadon about the appointment of an Assistant Revenue Surveyor. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4418, 5496, 5502
4724. Letter from Major W T Hughes, Commanding 1st Punjab Cavalry, H Q Camp, near Bankee, Jan 1859. Asks to be appointed Superintendent of the Dhoon Forests. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
4725. Letter from Brig General R Napier, Commanding Gwalior Field Force, Camp, Thanna, Jan 1859. In reply to a letter of 25 Nov. Regrets that he should have applied for anything inexpedient. Although the Governor General by conferring the present appointment upon him, had intended that he should not suffer in a pecuniary way, his present position entails more expense than in a Chief Engineership. Wishes the Governor General to improve his position. Printed copies of 2 General Orders (Mar 1855, May 1859) about promotion in the Army by Royal Warrant. Memorandum by General Birch about promotion to the temporary rank of Major General. Note by Canning, that Napier has been named to a Divisional command in China, and will receive his rank of Major General in that country from the Home Government.
4726. Letter from Mr C T Buckland, Junior Secretary to the Government of Bengal, Calcutta, Jan 1859. Submits an application from his brother Mr T Buckland for the Officiating appointment of Solicitor to the East India Company. Copy of reply, no vacancy at present.
4727. Letter from Mr L S Jackson, Officiating Civil and Sessions Judge of Rajshahye, Rampore Banleah, Jan 1859. Asks to be appointed Governor of the Straits Settlements. Copy of reply, acknowledgment. The subject of the dependence of the Straits Settlements Government on India is attracting much attention in England, and the Private Secretary's impression is that its connection with the Indian Government, will soon be severed. Should this be the case, it is unlikely that Indian officers would be nominated to the Government. Relations with China and England are far more important to the Straits than those with India. 4728. Copy of a letter to F B Gubbins Esquire, Commissioner, Benares, Jan 1859. With reference to his telegram to Leckie, the Governor General will hold a small private Durbar at Benares to receive the leading native gentlemen, in Gubbins' house.
4729. Letter from Mr F B Gubbins, Commissioner of Benares, Jan 1859. Asks for information about the Durbar the Governor General proposes to hold in Benares on 19 Jan; who is to be received, and in what form. Will the ex-royal family of Delhi be received? Also copy of telegram from Gubbins to Dr Leckie, 9 Jan asking if Gubbins' house will do for the Durbar, if not the Governor General's Durbar tent had better be sent down. 4730. Letter from Mr G Campbell, Judicial Commissioner Oudh, Lucknow, Jan 1859. Suggests that Mr Simson be allowed to exchange posts with Mr Lushington or some other officer. Campbell is about to make a tour of the South Eastern Provinces of Oudh, the new arrangements have just come into operation, and his work is entirely judicial. 4731. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Bhaugulpore, Jan 1859. Asks to be appointed a Deputy Magistrate. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.
4732. Letter from Mr F B Gubbins, Commissioner of Benares, Jan 1859. In continuation of his letter of 10 Jan encloses a list of the leading natives of Benares entitled to private interviews, and remarks that with 1 or 2 exceptions, the first 18 on the list are very low people, while some of the best men are left out. Asks for further information about arrangements etc. Copy of reply, the Governor General wishes to hold interviews and not a Durbar, and to meet the people of position, who have rendered eminent service or have been unmistakably loyal. These are to be chosen by Gubbins. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4728, 4729.
4733. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore, Jan 1859. Encloses a copy of a letter from Captain W R Shakespear, detailing the movements of the British column. A prisoner says that it was announced in the rebel camp that when the Banda Nawab surrendered, he was first plundered, and then hanged.
4734. Letter from Mr T Garrett, Deputy Post Master General, Calcutta, Jan 1859. Asks what should be done with the Governor General's letter to Mr C Wilson, who left Calcutta for New Zealand on 1 Jan. 4736. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Drummond, Engineers, Allahabad, Jan 1859. Has seen the Blue Book on Indian Railways, and it contains defective information about Indian iron. Renews his offer of service, could demonstrate the existence of all the materials necessary for the manufacture of iron in an easily accessible position. 4738. Letter from Mr J H Gordon, Head Clerk of the Commissioner and Superintendent's Office, Lucknow, Jan 1859. Asks to be appointed 3rd class Extra Assistant in Oudh. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Chief Commissioner. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4748.
4739. Letter from Mr J Crawford, late Conductor Public Works Department, Ghazeepore, Jan 1859. Asks to be allowed to submit his entire case, so that he may be granted his proper pension. Copies of letters. Copy of reply, he may submit a Memorial to the Government ; further letters should be sent to the Public Works Department. 4740. Letter from Sir Robert Hamilton Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Jan 1859. Reports that Tantia Topi and his men now seem to be beyond his reach, across the Chumbul. A small party of fugitives who escaped Colonel Becher and Colonel Beatson seem to have recrossed the Nerbudda. Asks who is to be appointed as his successor; Sir R Shakespear is willing to be appointed. He recommends Lieutenant Shakespear, the 1st Assistant at Indore, for some other appointment, perhaps a Commandant of Irregular Cavalry. Copy of reply, Lieutenant Shakespear's application will be considered.
4741. Letter from Mrs Willoughby, Mussoorie, Jan 1859. Asks the Governor General to move Lord Clyde to confirm the grant of the Victoria Cross made at the India House to her son Lieutenant G H Willoughby for services rendered at Saugor. Also asks for her son to be allowed his wound pension from Jun 1857 and not Jun 1858; his staff allowances have been reduced. States that if it were not for the loan made to her by Lord Canning, her son-in-law Colonel Hungerford would have suffered great privations in Hobarts Town, as he has not received his pay. Asks that her son-in-law Mr Willock may be posted to the Meerut Division. Mrs Havelock has agreed to bring the chess board for Lady Canning. Copy of reply, the Governor General regrets that he cannot correspond privately on the subjects of Mrs Willoughby's letter, but will consider any official representation. Returns thanks for the chess board.

4743. Letter from Mr Martin Gubbins, Civil Service, Allahabad, Jan 1859. States that since his application for the Agency at Indore, has received a letter stating that his services have been placed at the disposal of the Government of North West Provinces. Acknowledges receipt of 3 letters from the Private Secretary. Asks for an interview with the Governor General.
