Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 4751 to 4800, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 48 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 4701 to 4800’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 4762, 4766, 4774, 4777, 4779, 4780, 4785, 4789, 4790, 4791, 4797 and 4799 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
4751. Letter from Mr P H Egerton, Deputy Commissioner, Camp near Delhi, Jan 1859. Renews his application for a month's indulgence leave, or even a fortnight without pay. Copy of reply, the Governor General regrets that he cannot comply. Application should be made to the Lieutenant Governor.
4752. Letter from Lieutenant F J H Helbert, Assistant Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Jan 1859. Applies to be Political Agent at Kotah or Meywar. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
4753. Letter from Mr E M Potter, late Assistant in the Chief Commissioner's Office, Lucknow, Jan 1859. Asks to know the Governor General's orders upon his Memorials. 1/2 anna stamp.
4754. Letter from Mr E C Bayley, Officiating Secretary to Government North West Provinces, Allahabad, Jan 1859. Asks to be appointed a Commissioner in the Punjab. 4771. Letter from Mr F M De Rozario, Calcutta, Jan 1859. Sends a Memorial asking for employment in the North West Provinces or Oudh. Copy of reply, request refused.
4772. Letter from Captain C Thornton, Madras Artillery, Secunderabad, Jan 1859. Further to his appointment as 2nd Assistant to the Resident at Hyderabad; should this post be filled, asks to be given command of one of the batteries in the Nizam's Contingent. 1/2 anna stamp. 4775. Letter from Mr Thomas D'Cruz, Bagbazar, Chandernagore, Jan 1859. Asks for employment. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, refused.
4776. Letter from Sooltan Khan, late Native Doctor, Saugor, Allahabad, Jan 1859. States that for fear of being murdered by the men of his regiment which had mutinied and confined him, he ran away from Saugor for which he was sentenced to life imprisonment; the sentence was later commuted to 4 years; asks for a pardon. (Cover only) Endorsed: transferred to General Birch.
4777. Letter from Major J Sleeman, General Superintendent, Thuggee and Dacoitee, Jubulpore, Jan 1859. In reply, gives his reasons for recommending Major Edwards to act for him, instead of Major Hervey. Copy of earlier letter asking for information.'
4779. Copy of a letter to Captain Dennehy, Jan 1859. Explaining that the Governor General has mislaid his letter about Saligram, would he please write again. Memorandum.
4780. Letter from Mr M F Crisp, Moulmein, Jan 1859. Believes General d'Orgoni is an instrument of the French Government. Criticises the policy of the Government towards Ava, and suggests the establishment of an elective Government in the Tenasserim Provinces and the deputing of a Consul General to Burma, for which post he recommends his son, the Post Master of Rangoon. 1 enclosure. Copy of reply, acknowledgment; there is no occasion for employing Crisp's son in the manner suggested.
4781. Letter from Captain W D Dickson, 3rd Bombay Native Infantry, Malligaum, Jan 1859. To Lady Canning, sends an introductory letter from Lady Fife (no longer enclosed) and asks for staff employment, suggesting several posts. Statement of his services. Note about this. 4785. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta, Jan 1859. About a suitable candidate for the Revenue Survey, suggests Lieutenant Griffith, late 33rd Native Infantry. 4787. Letter from Mr R Simson, Under Secretary, to the Government, of India with the Governor General, Allahabad, Jan 1859. Sends an application from Mr J Mackenzie, Deputy Magistrate and Deputy Collector of Behar, for the post of Deputy Post Master General of Bengal. With testimonials. 4788. Letter from Mr J Rebello, Assistant in the Agra Secretariat, Allahabad, Jan 1859. In continuation of his last letter sends an extract from the Order Book of the Agra Office, being part of the farewell order which it is the practice of the Secretaries to record on their retirement from office.
4789. Letter from Captain T H Bullock, Deputy Commissioner Hyderabad, Oomrawtee, Jan 1859. Is anxious because the Government, has not confirmed him in his appointment. Believes that the restoration of the Ceded Districts would be a very politic measure in recognition of the services rendered by the Durbar. Submits his views about the administration etc of the Assigned Districts.
4790. Letter from Mr W Muir, Member of the Sudder Board of Revenue, Allahabad, Jan 1859. Forwards an extract of a letter from Mr Wingfield acknowledging receipt of Jung Bahadoor's proclamation ordering all rebels who had committed murder to leave Nepalese territories at once. This has been made known to Bala Rao and Mahomed Hussen whose followers, he believes, will not settle down. The Ranee of Toolsepore and the Ranee of Atownee have sent their chief agents to Sheik Khyroodeen at Dakehree with offers of surrender. Up to 1 Jan nearly 450 absconded rebels had surrendered to the Magistrates, and 100 more since.

Asks to be appointed Cantonment Magistrate, or to any post in the Commissariat. Note from Colonel Stuart; copy of reply, Mr Edmonstone has been appointed Lieutenant Governor of the North West Provinces, and Proctor should apply to him for a Magistracy.

4795. Letter from Baboo Kampta Pershad, Benares, Jan 1859. Asks for money.
4796. Anonymous letter, Jan 1859. Complaining of Mr Browne, the Inspector of Schools, Rawalpindi Circle. Cover only. Endorsed: transferred to Secretary Government Foreign Department.
4797. Letter from Mr W Muir, Member of the Sudder Board of Revenue, Allahabad, Jan 1859. With reference to the question of appointing a Commission at Allahabad for the trial of a certain class of sepoys, asks if the services of Captain Lewis, Principal Commissary of Ordnance, are likely to be required. Presumes that the case of the Canbul merchants whose property was plundered from the bullock train during the Mutiny, and also the case of Sirdar Khan, Deputy Collector Handa, have reached the Governor General. Note from Mr Bayley. Note from Edmonstone, he has no official knowledge of the Commission, though the Governor General spoke of it.
4798. Letter from Humeedooddeen Ahmed and Azeezooddeen Ahmed, Sasseram, Jan 1859. Ask to be appointed Deputy Magistrates and Deputy Collectors, for their services during the Mutiny. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot interfere with the patronage of the Lieutenant Governor, of the North West Provinces or Bengal. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4193, 4210.
4799. Letter from the Reverend J Mackay, Allahabad, Sep 1858, Submits his views about Hospital nurses; he does not believe lady nurses should be brought to India, as the arrangements are such that a lady could not go through the wards. Submits a memorandum recommending that the Bishop of Calcutta be authorised by the Government, to ordain a certain number of Deacons, to assist the chaplains, on the express understanding that they are not to be made priests. To Dr Leckie.
