Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 4801 to 4850, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 49 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 4801 to 4900’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 4808, 4816, 4821, 4832, 4840, 4841, 4842 and 4846 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

4804. Letter from Baboo Piaree Chund Mittra, Librarian, Public Library, Calcutta, Feb 1859, Sends 3 volumes of the Annual Reports containing some information about the Canada Rebellion and states that there are no other books on the subject in the Library. Copy of earlier letter; copy of reply.
4805. Letter from Captain A R E Hutchinson, Bheel Agent and Political Assistant to the Agent for the Governor General, Indore, Jan - Feb 1859. Applies to be Political Agent at Bhopal. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4808.
4806. Letter from Mr F R Lloyd, M C D E, Surgeon and Dentist, Meerut, Jan - Feb 1859. States that he lost all his property including instruments, at Agra during the Mutiny. He has received 2,000 Rupees in relief, but this is insufficient to enable him to renew his profession. He is supporting the widow and 3 children of Lieutenant Furnell, killed in action at Ooryah, as they have not yet received a pension. Copy of reply, the question of compensation generally must await the decision of the Home Government.
4807. Letter from Baboo Kisto Chunder Roy, Baraset, Jan - Feb 1859. Asks for employment, sends copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Government of Bengal. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4966, 5172
4808. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Jan - Feb 1859. Reports that Major Rickards, the Political Agent at Bhopal has resigned; suggests Captain Hutchinson might succeed him. Hamilton has applied to be relieved by 15 March, but will keep the responsibility until he embarks, if desired to do so.
4810. Memorial of Mirza Karamut Ally, late Moonshee in 12th Native Infantry Ghazeepore, Jan - Feb 1859. Asks for 50 Rupees arrears of his salary. Cover only. Endorsed: transferred to Secretary Government Military Department.
4811. Letter from Mr G Brown, Calcutta, Feb 1859. Introduces Mr William Venables brother of the late E F Venables of Azimgurh, who seeks an interview with the Governor General.
4812. Letter from Lieutenant E L Ommanney, 59th Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner in Pegu, Rangoon, Jan - Feb 1859. Asks to be allowed to return to the Punjab as soon as his services with the State Prisoners can be dispensed with. He has seen in General Orders that he has been transferred to the Pegu Commission. Copy of reply, he cannot be relieved immediately, but his wishes will be borne in mind. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4829.

4816. Letter from Lieutenant W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah, Camp, Simereeah, Jan - Feb 1859. Wishes to apply for privilege leave. General Whitlock is expected at Rewah on 2 Feb. Osborne is trying to get Fuzund Ally to come in. Copy of reply, he may take leave as soon as Bundelcund is quiet.

4820. Copy of reply to G Campbell Esquire, Lucknow, Jan 1859. The Governor General does not think it will be possible for him to make any change in Campbell's appointment. Governor General's Book number 1227.
4821. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore, Jan 1859. Is grateful to Lord Canning for having brought his services to the notice of the Secretary of State who has written to him in a most encouraging tone. Tantia Topi would have been completely crippled if Brigadier Smith had pushed on; Brigadier Napier however is keeping on the right bank of the Chumbul and if the Rajputana Force co-operate Tantia must take to the Chumbul.

4827. Petition of Mrs Young, widow of the late Sergeant Major John Young, attached to the Martiniere College, Lucknow, from Fort William, Feb 1859. Asks for an inquiry into her case, and for relief and compensation in view of her husband's death at Lucknow and the loss of her property there, and the murder of her 2 sons at Jhansi, and the loss of their property there. (Letter no longer enclosed ) Copy of reply, her letter has been transferred to Mr Simson, Secretary Foreign Department.

4832. Letter from Mr R Montgomery, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow, Jan - Feb 1859. Submits a letter from Captain Bunbury giving the movements of the Begum and the other rebels in Nepal. The Nepalese Government, has proclaimed that the rebels will not be assisted by the Durbar, on the contrary they would be handed over to the British unless they left the territory. According to a letter from Brigadier Rowcroft's column, Mahomed Hussun and the Toolseepore Hani had surrendered. All is quiet in Oudh. He (Montgomery) intends to leave on 15 Feb. Sir John Lawrence goes by the steamer of 25 Mar from Bombay.

Copy of reply, his application has been noted. It is very doubtful if he will be given a post, as he has no knowledge of the vernacular languages, and there are many candidates with a strong claim on the Government, because of services rendered during the Mutiny. 4840. Letter from Mr W Robinson, Commissioner of Police for the Madras Presidency, Calcutta, Feb 1859. Sends a letter from Lord Harris to the Governor General and asks for an interview with the Governor General to explain the plans of the Madras Government, to separate the executive Police from the Revenue and Magisterial branch of the administration; also about the organisation of an effective constabulary force, and improved village police in each district. Asks if he is to bring any papers with him. Copy of reply, granting him an interview, he may bring what documents he thinks proper.
4841. Letter from Mr B Warwick, Calcutta, Jan 1859. Reports that he has inspected the Delhi Prize jewels, many of them are suitable for the purpose mentioned to him; asks for an interview to explain his opinion. Copy of reply granting interview.

4845. Letter from Mr W H Russell, H Q Camp, Lucknow, Jan 1859. Asks whether a despatch for 'The Times' was received on 2 Nov for despatch by the Governor General's express. Copy of reply, the despatch was received in time for the express.
