Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 4901 to 4950, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 50 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 4901 to 5000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 4901, 4907, 4910, 4911, 4919, 4920, 4926, 4927, 4933, 4936, 4937, 4939, 4946, 4947, and 4950 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
4901. Letter from Captain R De Bourbel, Officiating Executive Engineer, Barrackpore Division, Barrackpore, Feb 1859. Submits plans and estimates for adding a landing stage to the river, and plans of the causeway lately made at Government House, Barrackpore. Suggests various other improvements which might be made at Barrackpore. Enclosed are 3 plans and 2 estimates. Copy of reply about the alterations. 4903. Letter from Mr G B Cornelius, late Deputy Assistant Commissary, Commissariat Department, Calcutta, Feb 1859. Sends a petition asking for 6 months batta, as granted to those who assisted in the capture of Lucknow. Petition no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his petition has been transferred to the Military Department.

Sends 2 letters from Captain Scot and Mrs Mawe interceding on behalf of the Nawab of Banda. Cover only. Endorsed: transferred to the Portfolio Secretary of State number 82. 4906. Letter from Bernard Bassaya, Valernademoudeliar, Cuddalore, Jan - Feb 1859. States that the Queen had sent orders to the Madras Government to grant him an appointment, asks that this may be done. 1 enclosure. Copy of reply, request refused.
4907. Letter from Major General Sir W P Mansfield, Chief of the Staff, Lucknow, Feb 1859. Sends 2 letters showing the quiet state of Palamow.
4908. Letter from Captain J Mac Viccar, 41st Madras Native Infantry, Madras, Feb 1859. Sends a letter to the Governor General (no longer enclosed) and asks for employment; he was for many years at the head of the Agency for the Suppression of Human Sacrifice in Orissa. Copy of reply, application noted. Governor General's Book number 1259.
4909. Copy of a letter to R J Dunlop Esquire, Calcutta, Feb 1859. Asking him to call on the Governor General.
4910. Letter from Mr A Hume, Magistrate and Collector, Etawah, Camp, Gosurahar, Feb 1859. Asks if Captain Chamberlain is certain to come to Etawah, and if Hume may leave the district. Copy of reply, answering his complaints. Telegraphic Message Sent number 577.
4911. Letter from Major General Sir W R Mansfield, Chief of the Staff, Lucknow, Feb 1859. Submits 2 letters, 1 from General Walpole about the arrangements made to clear out the jungles on the left bank of the Saarda; and 1 from Brigadier Horsford giving his reasons for establishing a patrol along the Frontier towards Pudnaha, which created a panic in the first valley of Nepal and induced a great number of the enemy to retire further into the interior in the belief that the British would soon cross the Frontier. Horsford believes that unless the British are invited to turn the rebels out of Nepal, they will stay there as long as their funds last.

4914. Letter from Dr H N Elton, Assistant Surgeon 32nd Native Infantry, the Naval Detachment and No 6 Bullock Battery at Barrackpore, Feb 1859. Applies for the appointment of Marine Surgeon and Presidency Surgeon, or Superintendent of Vaccine. Testimonial. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4232, 4295.
4915. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta, Feb 1859. Asks that Lieutenant Griffiths may join the Survey Department without delay. Copy of reply, he will be gazetted. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4785, 4830, 4921.

Forwards a letter from Lieutenant Colonel J Brasyer, Commandant of the Regiment of Ferozepore, reporting a prisoner's statement that there is a general feeling of alarm about the seizure of arms by the Government. Also encloses a copy of a vernacular letter (with translation by Private Secretary) from the Nawab of Bullubgurh (recte Malagurh according to the Private Secretary) about surrendering himself. 4939. Printed notice from the Government Central Museum, Madras, Jan 1856. Announcing that the Right Honourable the Governor of Madras has liberally established Zoological Gardens for the amusement and instruction of the people, and hoping that donations of rare or curious animals will be made.
4940. Letter from Lieutenant E Stevenson, 3rd Europeans, Gwalior, Feb 1859. Renews his application for staff employment. Asks to be appointed to one of the Police Regiments which are being raised in Bengal. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Lieutenant Governor for a Police appointment.
4942. Letter from Mr R D Turnbull, Secretary to the Municipal Commissioners, Calcutta, Feb 1859. Sends a copy of the Annual Report, and a copy of the first Report on a new system of drainage and sewerage in Calcutta. Reports no longer enclosed.
4945. Letter from Meean Rutton Singh of Mundee, Benares, Feb 1859. Submits a petition praying that if his claims to the Guddee of Mundee cannot be recognised, his pension may be increased, and he may be allowed to live at Mundee. 1/2 anna stamp. See also 5060 (Petition no longer enclosed.)
