Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 5001 to 5050, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 51 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 5001 to 5100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 5001, 5002, 5006, 5007, 5009, 5010, 5019, 5021, 5027, 5030, 5031, 5044, 5049, and 5050 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
5001. Letter from Dr F Mouat, Inspector of Jails in Bengal, Calcutta, Feb 1859. Will reply to the Private Secretary's enquiries after carefully considering the subject of the best mode of levying a tax on tobacco. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4967, 5006, 5123.
5002. Letter from Dr A Duff DD, Calcutta, Feb 1859. In reply, about the Governor General's donation to the Presbyterian Mission. Names various female schools which have been established by the Mission. Copy of earlier letter sending subscription of 200 Rupees.
5003. Letter from Mr H Stephens, Umritsur, Jan - Feb 1859. Sends a copy of his former application and asks that his claims founded upon his services during the Mutiny may be taken into consideration. Memorandum. Note from Mr Simson. Copy of reply, he should apply to Mr Bayley. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 5033
5004. Letter from Major C Herbert, Commandant of the Calcutta Native Militia, Calcutta, Feb 1859. Applies for the appointment of Acting Superintendent to the Mysore Princes. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
5005. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta, Feb 1859. Will send the maps to the Private Secretary's Office. Copy of earlier letter asking for various maps. The former Private Secretary Mr Courtenay seems to have taken the Private Secretary's maps with him when he left office. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 5146, 5150, 5188.
5006. Letter from Dr F Mouat, Inspector of Prisons in Bengal, Calcutta, Feb 1859. Submits his views on the best method of levying a Tobacco Tax. Believes that Indian tobacco might be made to compete with the European tobacco, and that an attempt might be made to grow good tobacco in the Andamans. 5007. Letter from Mr F W Bird, Madras Civil Service, Secretary Lawrence Asylum, Ootacamund, Feb 1859. Acknowledges the Governor General's donation of 5,000 Rupees. Two anna stamps. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4311, 4551, 4766.
5008. Letter from Lieutenant E G Biggins, 3rd Native Infantry, Simla, Feb 1859. The Commander in Chief is anxious to know where the Headquarters will be during the hot weather. Endorsed: answered privately.
5009. Letter from Mr H D Chick, Editor 'Lucknow Herald', Lucknow, Feb 1859. Asks to be supplied with a copy of the Calcutta Government 'Gazette'. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, he may procure the 'Gazette' by paying a subscription. Also note about this.
5010. Letter from Major General Sir W R Mansfield, Chief of the Staff, Lucknow, Feb 1859. The Commander in Chief is anxious to know where the Headquarters will be during the hot weather. Endorsed: answered privately.

5012. Letter from Mr P Simson, Under Secretary to Government of India, Foreign Department, Feb 1859. Forwards the Durbar Account for Jan 1859 (No longer enclosed). Copy of reply, returning account.
5013. Copy of letter to the Secretary of the Public Library, Calcutta, Feb - Mar 1859. Asking for the loan of 'Macgregor's Statistical Tables'. 28 Feb. Copy of later letter returning these.
5014. Letter from His Highness Runendra Bikrama Shah, 3rd Prince of Nepal, Benares, Feb - Mar 1859. Apologises for not having written before, and trusts that the Private Secretary had a good journey and is well. Copy of reply, acknowledgment, Private Secretary hopes to see His Highness when the Private Secretary next visits Benares.
5015. Letter from Mr G B Willock, Civil Service, Calcutta, Mar 1859. With reference to Mrs Willoughby's application on his behalf, applies to be Assistant to the Superintendent of Dehra Dun. Copy of reply, he should apply to Mr Edmonstone.
5016. Letter from Captain R de Bourbel, Officiating Executive Engineer, Barrackpore Division, Barrackpore, Feb - Mar 1859. Forwards an estimate for annual repairs to the roads in the Park at Barrackpore. No longer enclosed. Copy of reply returning this.
5017. Letter from Captain R de Bourbel, Barrackpore, Feb - Mar 1859. Forwards an estimate for the quadrennial and annual repairs to the buildings in Barrackpore Park. Copy of reply asking for further information. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 5034
5018. Letter from Mr J Rebello, Assistant in the Agra Secretariat, Allahabad, Feb - Mar 1859. Submits a draft of a letter, asks for a personal allowance. Copy of reply, returning draft.
5019. Letter from Mr C J Daniell, Under Secretary to Government North West Provinces, Allahabad, Feb - Mar 1859. Hopes his application for an increase in the rate of gratuity allowed by Mr Edmonstone will be favourably viewed by the Governor General. The new Lieutenant Governor is popular. 5020. Letter from Mr C Alabaster, Tolly Gunge, Calcutta, Feb - Mar 1859. Asks for some appointment to occupy him for 5 or 6 hours a day.
5021. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Feb - Mar 1859. Gives particulars of the movements of the rebels and of the British force. Encloses translation of a letter to the Soobah of Subalghur from Bhala Bhaya Pundit giving an account of himself and offering to capture Tantia Topi if assisted by the Government. The Nawab of Banda is waiting for orders. The rebels' expedition into Rajwarra was to find asylum, as the 4 generals and 600 men who surrendered to the Bikaneer Rajah are a great loss to them, and that if the Awa Thakoor had not helped the Rao Sahib he would have been in a fix. The Calpee Despatch having reached the Commander in Chief Hamilton hopes it will reach the Governor General and that the Gwalior one will follow quickly. Is very anxious to leave for England by 9 April.

5024. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Forwards a copy of a plan of 'Lord Clyde's Campaign in Oudh' (Not enclosed). Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgment.
5025. Letter from Mr J E Kitts, Agent to Mr Farquharson, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Asks if Lord and Lady Canning can attend an entertainment given by Mr Farquharson, and asks permission to announce the entertainment as under their patronage. Copy of reply, the Governor General is unable to attend any of Mr Farquharson's entertainments. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4892, 4918.
5026. Letter from Captain C Elliot, Deputy Commissioner Nagpore, Calcutta, Mar 1859. In reply, is anxious to make his stay in Calcutta as short as possible. Governor General's Book number 1269.

In connection with the vacancy in the office of Professor of Geology in the Presidency College, submits a Memorandum (no longer enclosed) on the best method of teaching Geology in Calcutta. 5029. Letter from Assistant Surgeon W Eddowes, Convalescent Depot, Allahabad, Feb - Mar 1859. Applies for an appointment in Oudh and sends copy of a testimonial. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
5030. Letter from Mr C Wingfield, Officiating Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow, Feb - Mar 1859. Is about to set out on a tour through the Province on the near side of the Gogra. Is well satisfied with the Military Police. Has given his attention to a reduction of expenditure. Does not think that the destruction of forts has been sufficiently thorough or effective.
5031. Letter from Dewan Hakim Rae, Benares, Feb - Mar 1859. Further to his case. Sends copies of testimonials and a copy of the grant of the Jageer naslan liad naslan in Persian (covering letter only). Copy of reply, he should apply to Mr Davies, Secretary at Lahore. 5037. Petition of the servants of the Governor General Calcutta, Feb - Mar 1859. Asks for a gratuity of 3 months' wages as compensation for their services with the Governor General in the North West Provinces, an indulgence granted by former Governor Generals.
5038. Letter from Mrs Du Bois, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Submits a petition asking for compensation for losses during the Mutiny at Lucknow. Explains why she did not register her claims at the office of the Compensation Commissioner at Lucknow within the prescribed period. Petition no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, her petition has been transferred to the Foreign Secretary.

5041. Letter from Captain S H Becher, Assistant Adjutant General, in charge of the Adjutant General's office, Calcutta, Mar 1859. In reply, regrets that he cannot supply copies of the General Orders asked for by the Private Secretary. Copy of earlier letter, one enclosure.
5042. Letter from Major H W Norman, Deputy Adjutant General of the Army, Camp, Kulhanpore, Mar 1859. Has no personal knowledge of the General Orders required. The Press and all connected with it are now on the way to Simla, when he joins them he will enquire further. Copy of earlier letter, one enclosure.
5043. Letter from Assistant Surgeon G M Govan, 2nd European Bengal Fusiliers, Delhi, Feb - Mar 1859. Sends an introductory letter (no longer enclosed) and asks for various appointments. Governor General's Book number 1273.
5044. Petition from the Muslims of Delhi, Mar 1859. Asking that they may be permitted to settle in their homes without any payment of fines. In the vernacular.
5045. Letter from Mr Joseph McCluskey, Calcutta, Feb - Mar 1859. Asks for a pension and compensation for losses during the Mutiny, and employment. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his application should be made to the Secretary to the Government of Bengal.
5046. Letter from Captain W White, Superintendent State Yacht Establishment, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Reports the damage done to the Bholeah number 1 at Armenian Ghat on 16 Feb due to the gross negligence of the Mate Manjee and crew, and proposes that they should be made to pay for the articles out of their wages. 5049. Letter from Major G R Edwards, 2nd Madras Cavalry, Bombay, Feb - Mar 1859. Is very disappointed that Major Hervey is to officiate as General Superintendent of Thuggee; asks for some other appointment. Copy of reply, the Governor General regrets any inconvenience to which Edwards has been put, the fault lies with Major Sleeman, who misled the Governor General. 5050. Letter from Mr W Robinson, Superintendent of Police, Madras, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Asks if anything is known of Lord Harris's probable movements to enable him to decide whether to await the second reading of the Madras Police Bill. Copy of reply, Lord Harris is expected to come to Calcutta when he has handed over the Madras Government to Sir Charles Trevelyan but it is not known by which steamer he will come.
