Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 5051 to 5100, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 51 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 5001 to 5100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 5051, 5052, 5054, 5058, 5059, 5063, 5066, 5069, 5070, 5072, 5075, 5076, 5087, 5088, 5093, 5095, and 5098 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

5052. Letter from Mr O Toogood, Officiating Magistrate of Monghyr, Mar 1859. Asks if the Governor General has passed any orders on his letter of 14 Feb; if his passage is to be paid by Government, and if the extra 6 months recommended by the President in Council is sanctioned. 5053. Letter from Captain C G Southey, 3rd Madras Europeans, Jubbulpore, Mar 1859. Asks to be appointed Cantonment Magistrate of Jubbulpore, or any other appointment of that kind. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Lieutenant Governor North West Provinces. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 5079.
5054. Letter from Baboo Issur Chunder Singh, Honorary Secretary, British Indian Association, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Sends a congratulatory address to the Governor General on the restoration of tranquillity and the return of the Governor General to Calcutta. Pages of signatures. Copies of two replies. 5055. Letter from Dr C T Paske, Civil Assistant Surgeon, Jounpoor, Mar 1859. Submits previous correspondence (no longer enclosed) and renews his request for extra leave of absence. Copy of reply, he should apply officially through the Lieutenant Governor.
5056. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J Graham, late 29th Native Infantry, Meerut, Mar 1859. Sends a letter to the Governor General, asks to be made General Superintendent of the Thuggee Department or for any other political or civil appointment. Copy of reply, the Governor General is unable to promise him any appointment.
5057. Letter from Mr G H Freeling, Collector of Hameerpore, Mar 1859. Asks that ladies may be allowed to go to Hameerpore. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Lieutenant Governor.
5058. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Feb - Mar 1859. Reports that the rebels have split up, and are cutting off in every direction. Encloses a letter about the movement of the rebels. Is anxious to know when he will be relieved. Regrets that he will not be the channel of conveying the Governor General's thanks to one of the many native chiefs who have proved loyal, and hopes that the long expected Khurreeta for Holkar may yet reach him before departure. The Queen's Speech will do good, the fact of a change in the Government is not believed, and will not be until some alteration is made in the designation of the diplomatic or political officers and until Queen's Regiments are substituted for those of the Company.
5059. Letter from Paboo Kristo Doss Paul, Assistant Secretary to the British Indian Association, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Submits copies of a pamphlet by himself on the subject of native fidelity during the Mutiny, and of another pamphlet on indigo cultivation in Bengal. Pamphlets no longer enclosed. 5060. Letter from Meean Rutton Sein, eldest son of Issurree Sein Rajah Mundee, Benares, Mar 1859. Asks for an increase in his allowance and permission to live at Mundee. Two papers. 5063. Letter from Mr T O Mayne, Magistrate of Banda, Camp, Kirwee, Mar 1859. Reports particulars of an attack made by a body of rebels under Runmust Singh and Furzund Ally on a railway party at Gentowah, resulting in the death of Messrs Evans and Linnell. (Copy)
5064. Lalla Sreenaram Sing, constituted Mookhear of 2 Baboos, Zemindars of Tirhoot, Mar 1859. Submits printed copy of testimonials to the services and loyalty of the two baboos. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
5065. Letter from His Highness Shahzirda Subudeva Singh, Benares, Mar 1859. Enquires after the Private Secretary's health. 1/2 anna stamp. Endorsed: answered privately.
5066. Letter from Captain J P Nixon, Officiating Political Agent, Bhurtpore, Mar 1859. Reports the despatch of two sandalwood chowries for Lady Canning. All is quiet at Bhurtpore, the rebels under Feroze Shah are reported to have given up their arms. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgment.
5067. Letter from Lord W Kay, Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Hill States, Simla Hills, Mar 1859. Reports the inconvenience of the arrangements whereby Dr Pesket is required to superintend vaccinations in the Mussoorie District which belongs to the North West Provinces as well as in the Simla hills, which are subordinate to the Punjab Government, and suggests that the Mussoorie District might be placed under the Superintendent of Vaccine stationed at Naini Tal. This arrangement would involve Mr Wilson, suggests he be employed in Gurkwub and Kumaon. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his letter has been transferred to Mr Simson. 5068. Letter from Baboo Praunuath Bose, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Regrets that his letter with five original enclosures should have gone astray, sends some original documents, and asks for an interview with the Governor General in connection with application for an invitation to Government House balls. Two letters enclosed. Copy of reply, the Governor General will not grant him an interview. The Private Secretary will not answer further letters from the Baboo. His enclosures are returned. 5069. Letter from Messrs R Scott Thomson and Company, Medical Hall, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Having been honoured with the Governor General's patronage and having for many years supplied medicines for Government House, ask permission to announce they do so 'by appointment'. Copy of reply, the Governor General has no objection.

5076. Letter from Captain F T Wroughton, 6th Europeans, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Asks for an interview with the Governor General to name his services with the Gurkha Force. Memorandum about Wroughton. Submits a Memorial from Mr Martin asking for a reconsideration of his petition to be granted confiscated land in Azimgurh. Letter and petition no longer enclosed. Sends an extract from a letter from the Lieutenant Governor North West Provinces about suits for recovery of property confiscated for rebellion, with remarks.
