Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 5101 to 5150, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 52 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 5101 to 5200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 5110, 5114, 5115, 5119, 5123, 5127, 5128, 5129, 5131, 5145, and 5147 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

5102. Letter from Major R Doria, 28th Madras Native Infantry Calcutta, Mar 1859. Sends a letter to the Governor General (no longer enclosed) and asks for an interview. Copy of reply, refusing interview. Governor General's Book number 1277.
5105. Letter from Dr J Gregory Vos, Honorary Secretary District Charitable Society, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Acknowledges receipt of 250 Rupees, the Governor General's donation to the District Charitable Society. Copy of earlier letter sending the subscription. Asking that copies of Telegraphic Messages sent to the Governor General be sent to the Private Secretary as formerly. Telegraphic Messages received number 1460, 1461, 1559, 1718, 4818. 5105. Letter from Captain R de Bourbel, Officiating Executive Engineer, Barrackpore Division, Mar 1859. Submits Estimates and Plans for alterations and additions to the Guard Room and to number 3 Bungalow in the Barrackpore Park (Covering letter only). Copy of reply about these. 5106. Letter from Mr E T Dudman, merchant and general agent, Futtyghur, Mar 1859. Sends a petition (no longer enclosed) from Chaudka Buksh Talookdar of Birwa, appealing against the order of the Deputy Commissioner of Mullaon calling upon him to produce Goolab Sing, his former Agent and now a rebel, within a stated period, on pain of expulsion from Birwa with confiscation of his estates. Copy of reply, Dudman's letter and the petition have been transferred to the Secretary to Government Foreign Department.
5107. Letter from Mrs E E Jones, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Submits a memorial asking for money. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot interfere with the decision of the Relief Committee. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 3038, 3064, 5118.
5108. Letter from Mr C B Lewis, Superintendent, Baptist Mission Press, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Sends a copy of 'Directions for Revenue Officers' to the Governor General (not enclosed). Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgment. Endorsed: Selection Book number 209
5109. Letter from Brigadier G St P Lawrence, Agent to the Governor General, Rajputana, Ajmere, Mar 1859. Sends a letter from Dr Lowndes recommending him to go to Europe on sick leave; he will not leave unless forced to do so, but will try leave at Aboo instead. Intends to make over charge to Major Eden. 5110. Letter from Brigadier G St P Lawrence, Agent to the Governor General, Rajputana, Ajmere, Mar 1859. With reference to another volume of correspondence from Captain Showers forwarded to the Government, repeats his request for the early disposal of the case. The seizure of Neembhara is quite unjustified and its non-restoration to the Nawab of Tonk is a poor return for his loyalty. Had he anticipated that Captain Showers' conduct would have remained so long unnoticed, he would have suspended him in connection with his seizure of Neembhara.
5111. Letter from Mr R Simson, Under Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department Calcutta, Mar 1859. Forwards a copy of a despatch from the Secretary of State for India, of 17 Jan, No 7P (Secret) requesting, with reference to the transfer from the Foreign Office to the Secretary of State for India of the superintendence of British relations with the Court of Persia, the appointment of an officer as 3rd paid attache, in place of Mr Adams, transferred to St Petersburgh. 5112. Letter from Major W F Eden, Political Agent, Jeypore, Mar 1859. Being instructed by Brigadier General Lawrence to go to Ajmere to relieve him, asks to be appointed to act for General Lawrence during his sick leave. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 5109, 5432.
5113. Letter from Captain G R Phillips, 5th Madras Cavalry, Madras, Mar 1859. Asks his letter to the Governor General of 30 Dec 1858 has been received. Copy of reply, no letter has been received. 5114. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore, Mar 1859. Sends a telegram about Rao Sahib's desire to surrender. The rebels are melting away so fast that the leaders are beginning to dread treachery. Is anxious for orders in the case of the Banda Nawab. Believes that the cultivation of opium in Bengal should not continue in the hands of the Government. If Mr Barnes or anyone else comes to Indore, he will find it a pleasant berth. Bundlecund requires a good officer, who will not be misled by the misrepresentations of the chiefs. Complains about the Post Office; deplores the addition of the bullock train to the Post Office Department. Asks that the name of Major Rickards' successor may be telegraphed to him.
5115. Letter from Dr S G Chuckerbutty M D, Assistant Surgeon, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Suggests the imposition of a Marriage Tax. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgment, and remarks. 5117. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Yule, Secretary to Government of India, Public Works Department, Calcutta, Mar 1859. 5119. Letter from Mr W S Atkinson, Secretary to the Asiatic Society, Calcutta, Apr 1859. Has laid before the Council the letter from the Private Secretary conveying Sir W Denison's request for an exchange of specimens of natural history; the Curator has been directed to report whether any and what duplicates are available. Copy of earlier letter mentioning Sir William Denison's desire for specimens for the Sydney Museum, particularly of shells. 5120. Letter from Lieutenant M M Proctor, late 33rd Light Infantry, doing duty Kumaon Battalion, Bhurja, Oudh, Mar 1859. States his services, and hopes for employment in the Commissariat Department or as a Cantonment Joint Magistrate, and withdraws his request for Police employment. Copy of reply, he should apply to Mr Edmonstone to be a Cantonment Magistrate. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4793, 5164.
5121. Letter from Captain F T Wroughton, 6th Europeans, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Sends his address and hopes that his papers have been laid before the Governor General.
5123. Letter from Dr J Mouat, Inspector of Prisons in Bengal, Camp, Ranchi, Chota Nagpore, Mar 1859. Submits the result of his inquiries about the consumption and cultivation of tobacco in the Bangonah and Chota Nagpore Districts, and will make inquiries in Behar. 5124. Letter from Rajah Ram Chunder Sing, son of Maharaj Rajah Ram Sing Bahadoor of Joynteah, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Asks for a reply to his letter of 22 February. Copy of reply, a reply to his letter was sent to the Post Office, Calcutta. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4987, 5143.

5127. Letter from Mr George Ricketts, Civil Service, Calcutta, Jan - Mar 1859. For the reasons assigned asks to be excused from accepting the invitation to dinner at Government House.
5128. Letter from Mr R Simson, Under Secretary to Government of India Foreign Department, Calcutta, Mar 1859. States that no order was issued upon Lord Dalhousie's Minute in which the prospective reduction in the office of Agent to the Governor General Rajputana was proposed. Mr Bushby and Sir Henry Lawrence received higher salaries on special grounds. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 5129, 5130.
5129. Letter from Mr R Simson, Under Secretary to Government of India Foreign Department, Calcutta, Mar 1859. States that the pay of the Rajputana Agent was in Sir E Lawrence's time 5500 Rupees per month, but according to paragraph 5 of Lord Dalhousie's Minute of 10 Dec 1852 the present salary will be 52000 Rupees a year. Asks to be appointed Assistant in the Thuggee and Dacoity Department where he has officiated for 14 months. Sends a letter from Major Sleeman. 5147. Letter from Mr G O'Riley, Deputy Commissioner in Pegu, Rangoon, Mar 1859. Offers his services, should the Government intend to carry out the proposed investigations with reference to a telegraph or canal communication with Siam and China through the Malay Peninsula across the Isthmus of Kraa. The Consul General at Bangkok has with the consent of the Prime Minister of Siam applied for his services in connection with this project. Encloses a pamphlet written by himself on the subject. Copy of reply, His Excellency can take no steps in the matter in the present condition of the finances of India. Governor General's Book number 213B.
