Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 5151 to 5200, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 52 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 5101 to 5200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 5158, 5160, 5163, 5165, 5166, 5168, 5169, 5171, 5173, 5175, 5176, 5183, 5192, 5193, 5195, and 5198 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
5151. Letter from Lieutenant W Vincent, Adjutant 2nd Bengal Police Battalion, Patna, Mar 1859. Having failed both with the Life Insurance Companies and the Un-covenanted Service Pension Fund to make provision for his family in the event of his death, because he is an officer in the Police Battalion, asks for some support from Government for his family after his death. Copy of reply, the Government cannot interfere.
5152. Letter from Lieutenant H D Manning, Commandant District Police, Azimgurh, Mar 1859. Asks for a better appointment. Copy of reply, request refused. See also 5900, 6645. Endorsed: Lady Canning number 17.
5153. Letter from Lord William Hay, Deputy Commissioner, Simla, Mar 1859. In reply, states that the Kumaon Vaccine Superintendency does not extend to Mussoorie, so that by the present arrangement Dr Peskett is under two Lieutenant Governors. Asks if Peskett has applied for leave of absence, as he has been away from his charge for nearly a month and a half. He will despatch the Chudders as soon as he gets them. 5154. Letter from Mr W J Money, Civil Service, Agra, Mar 1859. Asks to be appointed Deputy Commissioner in Oudh, or Extra Deputy Commissioner. Copy of reply, the Governor General will not appoint him to the Commission. For other promotion, he should apply to the Government of the North West Provinces. 5155. Letter from Mr E P Singer, Extra Assistant Commissioner Nagpore, on leave, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Asks for an interview with the Governor General. Copy of reply, request refused.
5156. Letter from Messrs Greedhur Bose Roy and Company, Projectors of the Charitable School at Gurranhatta, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Ask for the Governor General's aid for the School. Copy of reply, it appears that the School has not been brought under the inspection of the Director of Public Instruction. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4828, 4878, 5159.
5157. Letter from Mrs Dixon, Cuttack, Mar 1859. Asks permission on behalf of her husband Captain Dixon, to dedicate his photographic views to Lady Canning. Copy of reply, Lady Canning has much pleasure in accepting the dedication.
5158. Letter from Mrs E B Jones, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Submits an appeal to the Governor General asking for a reconsideration of her case. Copy of reply, the Governor General has enquired fully into her case, and declines to give assistance. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 3038, 3064, 5118, 5137, 5167, 5175, 5176.
5159. Letter from Baboo Greedhur Bose Roy and Company, Projectors, Gurranhatta Charitable School, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Renew their request for money for the School. Copy of reply, the Governor General will not contribute to a school which is not inspected by the Director of Public Instruction, as he has no means of judging the usefulness of the institution. 5160. Copy of a letter to the Reverend W Butler, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Thanking him for his letter to the Governor General, who wishes every success to the Mission of American Methodists which Butler represents; but declines to subscribe. Governor General's Book number 1287.
5161. Letter from Mr W A Ducasse, late Engineer attached to the Government Steam Ferry Boat 'Benares', Calcutta, Mar 1859. Submits a Memorial (no longer enclosed) asking to be restored to the service of Government. Copy of reply, his Memorial has been transferred to the Home Department.
5162. Letter from Captain C G Southey, 3rd Madras Europeans, Jubbulpur, Mar 1859. Asks for various appointments. Cover only. Endorsed: Transferred to Colonel Stuart.
5163. Letter from Mr E F Harrison, Officiating Accountant General to the Government of India, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Forwards a statement made by a camelman who left the rebel camp on 20 March giving among other news particulars of the whereabouts of the Nana Sahib, Bala Rao and the Begum; of the strength of their followers; of their probable movements; and of a speech made by Bala Rao at a parade of troops, on the subject of the Amnesty.

5165. Extract of a private letter from Mr Mayne, Magistrate of Banda, 1858. To Mr Muir Secretary to Government North West Provinces. Giving an extract of a letter from Mrs Mawe in favour of the Banda Nawab and his Begum.
5166. Letter from Messrs Percy Douglas and Company, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Send a letter to the Governor General asking for his patronage of their project to establish a Calcutta Suburban and Mofussil Omnibus and Carriage Company Limited. Copy of reply, the Governor General wishes every success to the project, but declines to become a shareholder. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 5189.
5167. Letter from Mr M Wylie, Honorary Secretary Relief Fund, Calcutta, Mar 1859. In reply, submits a report on the case of Mrs E B Jones. Copy of earlier letter asking for information. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 3038, 3064, 5107, 5118, 5158.
5168. Letter from Sir Richmond Shakespear, Resident at Baroda, Apr 1859. Acknowledges various communications, and gives the substance of his acceptance by telegram of the Central India Agency. Recommends Dr Stratton, whom he would like to have with him at Indore. Copy of earlier letter asking him to telegraph his answer to the offer of the Central India Agency to Calcutta, and also to Lord Elphinstone at Bombay. 5169. Letter from the Reverend F Ireneus, Carmelite Missionary, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Asks for money for the poor of Verapoli in the Malabar Coast. Copy of reply, request refused.
5170. Letter from Mr J Hume, Senior Magistrate of Police Calcutta, Mar 1859. Submits an application on behalf of one of his sons. Copy of letter to Mr Simson asking if there are any vacancies as Extra Assistant Commissioners in the Punjab, Nagpore, Oudh, Pegu. Reply from Simson. 5171. Letter from Dr S G Chuckerbutty M D, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Suggests a marriage tax for India, which would be a good source of revenue and would tend to check polygamy. Admits that in a great state of mental excitement he sent a Memorial to the Queen; asks the Governor General to deal leniently with him and restore him to office. 1d (?) stamp. 5179. Letter from Mr C W West, Inspecting Post Master, Canana Division, Camp, Cananore, Mar 1859. Sends papers about his pension (no longer enclosed) and asks for intercession on his behalf.
5180. Letter from the Honourable H Ricketts, Member of the Supreme Council, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Wishes the Governor General to be asked for the missing letter from Sir B Maxwell in the dispute between the Governor of the Straits Settlements, Mr Blundell, and the Recorder. 5181. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to Government Home Department, Calcutta, Mar 1859. Has no knowledge of the missing letter from Sir B Maxwell and believes it never came. 5191. Letter from Lieutenant M M Procter, late 38th Light Infantry, Kumaon Battalion, Bhinga, Oudh, Mar - Apr 1859. In reply, has already applied to the Lieutenant Governor but having little chance of success asks that his name may remain in the Governor General's list.
5192. Letter from Mr E Thornton, Judicial Commissioner Punjab, Lahore, Mar - Apr 1859. Offers himself as a candidate for the vacant seat in the Supreme Council, states his services. 5193. Letter from Mr F Gouldsbury, Commissioner of Rajshahye, Rampore Banleah, Mar - Apr 1859. Sends a letter to the Governor General applying for the vacant seat in the Supreme Council, states his services and sends copies of testimonials. 5194. Letter from Mr C Alabaster, Chinese Interpreter, Tollygunge, Apr 1859. Asks that Major Herbert's proposal to the Government, that the carriage allowed to Alabaster be discontinued, may be turned down. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, urging him not to allow his quarrel with Herbert to come before the Government officially. Endorsed: Transferred to Secretary Foreign Department. 5195. Letter from Mr M P Dunne, Calcutta, Apr 1859. Sends a letter and papers connected with his services at Ghazeepore during the Mutiny, and hopes that the Governor General will bestow upon him some of the forfeited villages of Shahabad or Azimghur. Covering letter only. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Secretary to Government North West Provinces for an official recommendation.
