Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 5201 to 5250, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 53 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 5201 to 5300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, [Gerald Chetwynd Talbot Lewin from 1 August 1856, then Lewin Bentham Bowring from 1 April 1858], and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 5202, 5203, 5204, 5207, 5210, 5212, 5220, 5221, 5222, 5224, 5225, 5230, 5237, 5240, 5243, 5245, 5246, and 5247 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

5202. Letter from Captain H Raban, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, Alipore, Apr 1859. In reply, as Mr Dunne's services were especially rendered in the Ghazeepore and Azimgurh Districts, his name was not brought officially to the notice of the Government of Bengal. Copy of earlier letter asking if any reward has been recommended for Mr M P Dunne. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4981, 5195, 5204, 5545, 5695.

5204. Letter from Captain H A Prinsep, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor North West Provinces, Allahabad, Apr 1859. In reply, states that there is no record of any recommendation for reward in favour of Mr Dunne, either in his or in the Secretariat's office. 5205. Letter from Mr R Simson, Under Secretary to the Government Foreign Department Calcutta, Apr 1859. Sends a copy of a letter from the Secretary to the Chief Commissioner Oudh about the appointment of Lieutenant C H Grace, 30th Madras Native Infantry, as 3rd class Assistant Commissioner Oudh. 5206. Letter from Captain J B Dennys, Superintendent of Neemuch, Neemuch, Mar - Jul 1859. States that he has applied through General Lawrence for the acting appointment at Jaipur; also applies to be Political Agent of Jodhpur. Copy of reply, the Governor General regrets that he was unable to appoint him. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 5279.
5207. Letter from Mr H Stanbrough, Seetabuldee, Nagpore, Mar - Apr 1859. Offers his services in connection with the produce and trade of Nagpore, submits a Memorandum about cotton and teak in the Province. Three specimens of cotton enclosed. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgment. The Governor General regrets that he cannot employ Stanbrough's services See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4124, 4220, 8195.

5210. Copy of a letter to Major C Herbert, Alipore, Apr 1859. Acknowledging his report. It is unnecessary to bring to the official notice of Government Herbert's disagreement with Mr Alabaster. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 5194.
5211. Letter from Dr D McPherson, Inspector General of Hospitals, Madras Army, Balasore, en route to Calcutta, Apr 1859. Asks for an interview with the Governor General. Copy of reply, asking what he wishes to say to the Governor General.
5212. Letter from the Honourable G C Talbot, Private Secretary to Lord Stanley, East India House, London, May - Jun 1859. In reply, has submitted Messrs Thornton's and Gouldsbury's applications for Council, and their names will be considered. Copy of earlier letter sending him applications. 5213. Letter from Captain G Hamilton, Assistant to the Governor General's Agent, Rajputana, Camp, Erinpoorah, Mar - Apr 1859. States his services, asks for a position equal to that he held in the Bhurtpoor Survey.
5214. Letter from Captain W H Beynon, Assistant Agent to the Governor General Rajputana Camp, via Ajmere, Mar - Apr 1859. Asks to be appointed Officiating Political Agent of Jaipur, sends two copies of testimonials.
5215. Letter from Mr E M Potter, late of the Chief Commissioner 's Office, Oudh, Lucknow, Apr 1859. States the circumstances under which he was dismissed from the Chief Commissioner's Office, and repeats his request for restoration. 1/2 anna stamp. 5216. Letter from Lieutenant G A Laughton, Assistant Superintendent Revenue Survey, South Maharatta Circle, Camp, near Belgaum, Mar - Apr 1859. Applies to be General Superintendent of Thuggee in the Bombay Presidency. One enclosure. Copy of reply, the Governor General has made other arrangements.
5217. Letter from Mr R Turnbull, Secretary, to the Municipal Commissioners Calcutta, Apr 1859. Forwards two copies of the pamphlet on Mr Rendel's Report on the proposed system of the Drainage and Sewerage of the Town of Calcutta (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgment. 5218. Letter from Lieutenant C K M Walter, Assistant Agent to the Governor General for Rajputana, Camp, Polagaon, Mar - Apr 1859. Submits his claims for the new office in the Meenah Districts of Meywar, Boondee and Jeypore. With testimonials.
5219. Letter from Mr H J F Berkeley, Bareilly, Mar - Apr 1859. Has failed to obtain from the Military authorities the restitution of his house in Bareilly now used as a hospital, and asks for redress. Cover only. Endorsed: transferred to Secretary Government Military Department. R North West Provinces. Book number 342.
5220. Letter from Mr C Alabaster, Tollygunge, Apr 1859. In reply, would have followed the Private Secretary's advice, but Major Herbert having already sent up the correspondence to Mr Beadon, the official altercation is unavoidable, unless Beadon induces Herbert to withdraw the correspondence at once. 5221. Letter from Dr D McPherson, Inspector General of Hospitals, Madras Presidency, Calcutta, Apr 1859. In reply, wished for an interview to submit the accompanying Memorandum showing the urgent necessity of adopting preventative measures to check disease amongst European soldiers in India. Endorsed: note by Canning that he has seen McPherson, and no answer is needed.
5222. Letter from Lieutenant C W Burton, Her Majesty's Bombay Army, Jhalra Patun, Mar - Apr 1859. Asks if an answer has been received to his Memorial to the late Honourable Court of Directors asking for a cadetship. Submits an application asking for a transfer to one of the European regiments to be raised in the Bengal Presidency. Note from Mr Beadon. Note from General Birch. Copy of reply, a reply to his Memorial has not yet been received from the Home Government. The Indian Government cannot appoint him to one of the European regiments. 5224. Copy of a letter to Major Colin MacKenzie, Calcutta, Apr 1859. Informing him that the Governor General has read the printed 'Narrative of Nizamut Affairs' which MacKenzie sent. The Governor General wishes to know who wrote the Narrative, when it was printed, and whether it has been given or shown to anyone, and if so to how many and to whom. Endorsed: Book number 151.
5225. Letter from Mr C Wingfield, Chief Commissioner Oudh, Lucknow, Apr 1859. Promises to abide by the instructions regarding recommendations for appointments. Owing to Colonel Horseford's misinformation about the location of the Begum and the bulk of the rebels, they have been allowed to escape, but believes that their number is exaggerated, and that they will go home quietly. It is not likely that any armed body can cross the Gogra which is well watched. Only a few have come in, as they fear that if they surrender they will be noted and arrested later, whereas if they reach their homes unperceived they expect to evade all enquiry. Copy of earlier letter about recommendations for appointments. These should be made through the Private Secretary and not officially.
5226. Letter from Mr R T Spencer, Agra, Apr 1859. Asks for a re-consideration of his Memorial asking for an Extra Assistantship or a Deputy Collectorship. Copy of reply, his application has been noted, but the Governor General is unable to hold out any promise of a post. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4553, 4554, 4607, 4617.

Forwards a copy of a letter from Major A B Kemball, Political Agent in Turkish Arabia, applying for 15 months' leave to Europe on medical certificate, which has been granted in the Foreign Department. 5232. Letter from Major A P Phayre, Commissioner of Pegu, Prome, Mar - Apr 1859. Has allowed leave to Lieutenant Ommaney to proceed to Calcutta to report to the Foreign Department as he expects his services will be placed at the disposal of the Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, and has appointed Captain Davies to take charge temporarily of the State Prisoners. 5236. Letter from Mr A J S Donald, Extra Assistant Commissioner, Punjab, on leave, Budaon, Apr 1859. Asks if his Memorial of 1 Feb has been received. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary has received no such Memorial.
5237. Letter from Captain H de Bourbel, Officiating Executive Engineer, Barrackpore Division, Apr 1859. Asks permission to excavate a tank to fill up a coffer dam. Plan enclosed.

5239. Letter from Lieutenant C V Jenkins, 47th Bengal Native Infantry Calcutta, Apr 1859. Renews his application for staff employment. One enclosure. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 3941.
5240. Copy of a letter to Lieutenant Colonel Colin MacKenzie, Calcutta, Apr 1859. The Governor General wishes MacKenzie to discourage the Nawab Nazim giving a dinner for the Governor General. He will return the Nazim's visit shortly.
5241. Letter from the Honourable R Montgomery, Officiating Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Lahore, Apr 1859. Is willing to have Lieutenant Ommaney as an Assistant and wishes him to join at once. Copy of earlier letter about this. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4812, 4829, 4987a, 5232, 5253.
5242. Letter from Lieutenant General the Honourable Sir J Outram Bart, Calcutta, Apr 1859. In reply, states that Dr Hyslop would be a better selection than Lieutenant Disbrowe for the Officiating appointment in Turkish Arabia during the absence of Major Kemball. Sends a letter together with the draft of his reply (no longer enclosed) to Nawab Ikbal-ood-Dowlah about his allowance. Copy of earlier letter about Disbrowe and Hyslop; copy of reply, Hyslop will be appointed. The Governor General approves of the letter to the Nawab. 5243. Letter from Mr C Alabaster, Calcutta, Apr 1859. Reports the death of Commissioner Yeh, and suggests that with reference to the Chinese prejudice against being buried out of their native country, his body should be sent back to China. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 5251.
5244. Letter from Dr J A Currie, Assistant Surgeon 8th Irregular Cavalry and Officiating Civil Surgeon Seetapore, Apr 1859. Asks for the Civil Surgeoncy of Lucknow, states his services. Copy of reply, there is no vacancy at present. Governor General's Book number 421.
5245. Letter from Mr W Muir, Secretary to Government North West Provinces, Agra, Sep 1857 - Apr 1859. Reports the recapture of Delhi on 22 Sept and sends an extract from Colonel Becker's letter to Colonel Nixon. The King and Zeemul Mehal Begum are close prisoners; the princes were brought in by Captain Hodson from Humayun's tomb and shot at the Delhi Gate. A pursuing column under Colonel Greathed will leave immediately. Received in Private Secretary's Office 11 Apr 1859.
5246. Letter from Captain W Osborne, Political Agent in Rewah, Gurh, Mar 1859. Gives an account of the pursuit of the rebels who killed 2 Railway engineers. Endorsed: note by Mr Edmonstone.
