Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 5251 to 5300, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 53 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 5201 to 5300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 5202, 5203, 5204, 5207, 5210, 5212, 5220, 5221, 5222, 5224, 5225, 5230, 5237, 5240, 5243, 5245, 5246, and 5247 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
5251. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Government of India Foreign Department, Calcutta, Apr 1859. Sends two letters from Mr Alabaster announcing the death of His Excellency Yeh, and giving the official designation of the deceased. Beadon has asked Major Herbert to send in an official report, with a professional one from Dr Payne. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 5243.
5252. Letter from Dr Allen Webb M D, Secretary to La Martiniere, Calcutta, Apr 1859. Sends an Annual Report for 1858, and intimates that a meeting of the Governors of the Institution will take place on Monday 18 Apr (Report no longer enclosed). Endorsed: See Book number 153.
5253. Letter from Lieutenant E L Ommanney, 59th Native Infantry, Calcutta, Apr 1859. Asks that Mr Montgomery's reply regarding him may be sent to him at Lahore, care of Lieutenant Colonel Ommanney. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 5241.
5254. Letter from Mr P Soobaroyen, Secretary, City of Madras Native Christian Literary Institution, Apr - May 1859. Sends a prospectus of the Institution and asks for the Governor General's aid. Note about the Institution.
5255. Letter from Mr J W Duff, Calcutta, Apr 1859. Submits a Memorial and testimonials, and asks that in consideration of the services of his father the late Dr Duff, 5th Native Infantry and his circumstances, he may be appointed Sub Deputy Opium Agent or Assistant Commissioner Oudh. Copy of reply, request refused.
5256. Letter from Major R N Raikes, late Government Remount Agent, Delhi, Apr 1859. Asks to be appointed Political Agent at Bhurtpore if the post becomes vacant. Copy of reply, the post has been filled.
5257. Letter from the Honourable R Montgomery, Officiating Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Lahore, Apr 1859. Requests that if no decision has been given in the case of Lieutenant Boswell of the Punjab Irregular Force and Lieutenant Chalmers, Assistant Deputy Commissioner, the enclosed extract of a letter from Colonel Edwardes in favour of Chalmers for the charge of Eusufzai (?) might be submitted to the Governor General. Chalmers' crime was not as grave as that of Boswell. Note from Mr Beadon, that the case has been disposed of, both officers have been remanded to their regiments. They quarrelled over a native woman.
5258. Letter from Mr H G Keene, Superintendent Dehradun, Apr 1859. With reference to Lord W Hay's proposal to restrict the operations of Dr Peskett, the Superintendent of Vaccine, to the Punjab and to place the country eastward of the Tonse and Jumma Rivers under the officer at present in charge of vaccine in Gurhwal and Kumaon and the Trans-Gangetic Provinces; makes some comments on this scheme. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his letter has been transferred to the Foreign Department.

5261. Letter from Major R Doria, 28th Madras Native Infantry, Calcutta, Apr 1859. Submits papers, and asks for political employment. Copy of reply, acknowledgment. 5263. Letter from Lieutenant F W Bannerman, 10th Bombay Native Infantry Commanding the Jodhpur Sikh Horse, Neemuch, Apr 1859. Asks to be nominated an Assistant in the Rajputana Agency, states his services. Copy of a testimonials. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
5268. Letter from Mr R Simson, Under Secretary to the Government of India Foreign Department, Calcutta, Apr 1859. Forwards the Durbar Accounts for Feb and Mar (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply returning counter-signed accounts.
5269. Letter from Captain B Hawes, 2nd European Bengal Fusiliers, Delhi, Apr 1859. Reports that Captain Gaynor has resigned his appointment, and that there are now five captains of his regiment on staff employ. Renews his request for civil employ. Copy of reply, the Governor General can make no promise of an appointment but he will be considered for any suitable vacancy. 5272. Letter from the Reverend C B Lewis, Financial Secretary to the Baptist Mission Society, and Superintendent Baptist Mission Press, Calcutta, Apr 1859. Forwards a letter from the Baptist Mission Society offering for sale to the Government the establishment known as the Baptist Mission Press. Copy of reply, the Governor General is obliged to the Society for the offer, but declines to purchase.
5273. Letter from the Honourable H Ricketts, Member of the Supreme Council, Calcutta, Apr 1859. As there will be a Special Council to consider his proposed revision of civil salaries, suggests that the Financial Secretary be directed to make over to each of the other Civil Secretaries a copy of his Report. Forwards a copy of a letter from the Governor General's Agent in Rajputana submitting an application from Captain Dennys, Superintendent of Neemuch, for the temporary vacancy in the Political Agency of Jaipur and observing that the claims of this officer are secondary to those of Captain Brooke and Captain Lloyd. 5281. Letter from the Honourable R Montgomery, Officiating Lieutenant Governor Punjab, Lahore, Apr 1859. Forwards a letter from Major Bruce giving particulars of the rebels' movements, and emphasising the importance of getting in as many of the rebels as the Government can pardon with dignity.

5297. Letter from Pundit Ajoodheea Persad, Extra Assistant Commissioner Oudh, Fyzabad, Apr 1859. Sends information about the rebels. Asks for the grant of a Jagheer and title for his services. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, acknowledgment. Private Secretary understood that the Pundit was promoted to the grade of Extra Assistant Commissioner in recognition of his services. Any recommendation in his favour from the Deputy Commissioner or the Commissioner would be considered.

5299. Letter from Mr C J Daniell, Civil Service on leave, off Madras, Apr - Jul 1859. Submits his views on the subject of Taxation. He is against an Income Tax; would enforce the use of stamp papers for Hooudees, Bills of Exchange and Bonds; would tax the manufacture of shawls and ornaments in favour of a House Tax throughout India. Believes that the amount of bullion withdrawn from circulation should be ascertained by some such means as are adopted in England. Comments on the present Revenue system of India. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement and comments.
5300. Letter from Mr R J Carbery, Calcutta, Apr 1859. Sends a petition asking for a grant of confiscated land in Oudh. (Petition no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, his Memorial has been transferred to the Foreign Department.
