Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 5301 to 5350, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 54 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 5301 to 5400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 5311, 5312, 5316, 5326, 5327, 5328, 5331, 5341, 5343, 5344, and 5347 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

5302. Apr 1859. Letter from Captain J C Brooke, Officiating Political Agent, Joudhpore and Serohi, Mount Aboo. Asks to be confirmed in his appointment. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 5279
5303. Apr 1859. Letter from Major R N Raikes, late Government Remount Agent, Meerut. Expresses a hope that he may not be long out of his regiment.
5304. Apr 1859. Letter from Captain A Ternan, 1st class Deputy Commissioner Saugor and Nerbudda Territories, on leave, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General. Copy of reply, asking him to state his business in writing.

5309. Apr 1859. Letter from Mr J Middleton, late 3rd Clerk, 1st Division, B D C Office, Madhopore, Sialkot. Asks for employment. Copy of reply, request refused.
5310. Apr 1859. Letter from Dr W Peskett M D, Superintendent of Vaccine in the hills, Mussoorie. Complains of having been condemned by the Commander-in-Chief and the Director General of the Medical Department in connection with the case of the late Mr Farrington, upon the ex parte statement of Dr Ross; submits documents and an explanation (Letter and documents no longer enclosed.) 5312. Apr 1859. Letter from The Reverend R Henderson, Junior Chaplain of St Andrews Church, and Moderator of the Kirk Session, Calcutta. Sends a letter from the Reverend Dr Bryce, Convenor of the Committee of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland on Indian Churches, thanking the Governor General for recommending an increase in the number of chaplains of the Church of Scotland. Office memorandum.

5315. Apr 1859. Letter from Mr E M Potter, late Chief Commissioner's Office, Lucknow. Asks for the Governor General's forgiveness and prays to be reinstated. 1/2 anna stamp.
5316. Apr 1859. Letter from Mr C Alabaster, Calcutta. Regrets that before his departure to China by the 'Fiery Cross' he is not permitted an interview with the Governor General as the authorities in China may conclude that he has done something to lose His Lordship's favour. Thanks the Private Secretary and Governor General for their kindness.

5324. Apr 1859. Letter from Captain W White, Superintendent State Yacht Establishment, Calcutta. As the State Bholeah No 1 is found to be quite rotten and unfit to be repaired, asks whether the Private Secretary would like to have the one which is now at the Yard, which is smaller. 5325. Apr 1859. Letter from Lieutenant L C Barton, 1st Bombay Grenadiers, late Assistant Resident at Baroda, Kurrachee. Is now available for extra-regimental employment, and asks to be appointed Assistant to the Resident at Baroda.
5326. Apr 1859. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Resident at Baroda. Directs attention to his earlier letter about the transit and customs dues, and also about the services of the 2 ministers at Baroda, Govind Rao and Gunesh Punt. Copy of earlier letter to Shakespear. 5327. Apr 1859. Letter from Mr D F Carmichael, Madras. Asks what is the precedence assigned in Calcutta to Consuls for foreign states. Note about this. Copy of reply, no orders on this subject have been issued by the Government of India. The Governor General believes they (the Consuls) should receive the same comparative rank as British Consuls under the regulations of the Home Government in 1848 (specified).
5328. Apr 1859. Letter from Mr J Newmarch, Barrister at law, Calcutta. Asks that the Governor General may suspend his assent to the Bill to Amend the Law relating to the recovery of rent in the Presidency of Fort William in Bengal, for a few days, for the reasons assigned. Copy of reply, the Governor General has already given his assent.
5329. Apr - Jun 1859. Letter from Major General R J H Birch, Secretary to the Government of India, Military Department Calcutta. Forwards a copy of a letter from the Secretary to the Government of Bengal asking for the services of a military officer as Junior Assistant to the Commissioner at Chota Nagpore. 2 other letters. Copy of reply to Birch, asking him for the names of deserving young officers.

5331. Mar - Apr 1859. Letter from Messrs H and R Schlagintweit, Berlin. Having heard from Lord Stanley that their brother Adolphe has been killed in Central Asia, hope that Government will sanction their enquiry for the recovery of papers and drawing instruments which belonged to him. 2 printed copies of this letter. 5345. May 1859. Letter from Captain W White, Superintendent State Yacht Establishment, Calcutta. In reply, about the dimensions of the boat the Private Secretary might use. 5346. May 1859. Letter from Mrs S Richardson, Calcutta. Renews her request for the kind interest of the Private Secretary on her behalf with Lady Canning, to whose address a Petition is enclosed. Returns thanks for the donation of 10 Rupees sent by the Private Secretary. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary refuses to lay her letter before Lady Canning.
