‘No. 54 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 5351 to 5400

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 5351 to 5400, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 54 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 5301 to 5400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 5351, 5354, 5355, 5359, 5360, 5361, 5362, 5363, 5366, 5371, 5372, 5375, and 5398 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
5351. May 1859. Letter from Mr T M Robinson, merchant, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General to make certain proposals on the subject of the new 5.5% loan. Copy of reply, arranging interview.
5352. May 1859. Letter from Captain H Raban, late Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, Alipore. Returns a paper by S G Chuckerbutty about taxation (not enclosed). See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 5115, 5171. Endorsed: Governor General's letter to Mr Halliday 29 Mar 59.
5353. May 1859. Letter from Rajah Ram Chunder Sing, son of Maharajah Ram Sing Bahadoor of Jynteah, Calcutta. With reference to the Governor General's proclamation offering a reward for the capture of the Mana, states that he has employed a large number of spies at an expense of about 40 or 50 thousand Rupees to this end; has asked for permission to go to the North West Provinces but has received no reply. (Letter no longer enclosed.) Copy of reply, his letter has been transferred to the Foreign Department. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 7381.
5354. May 1859. Letter from Mr George Brown, Calcutta. Sends a letter from Mr Venables of Mirzapore for the Governor General (not enclosed) asking for some grant of confiscated land in Oudh. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
5355. May 1859. Letter from Mr Cecil Beadon, Secretary, to the Government, of India, Foreign Department Calcutta. In reply, about civilians for the Punjab. Copy of earlier letter about this. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 5290, 5341.
5356. May 1859. Letter from Mr G H Wilcox, Hazareebagh. Sends an application to the Governor General. Copy of reply, the Governor General regrets that there is little hope of an appointment for Wilcox.
5357. May 1859. Letter from Mrs M J McMullin, Calcutta. Forwards a letter to the Governor General and asks for the Private Secretary's interest on her behalf, and an interview. Copy of reply, the Governor General declines to help her.
5358. May 1859. Letter from Mr E M Potter, late Chief Commissioner's Office, Lucknow. Asks for reconsideration of his case. 1/2 anna stamp.
5359. May 1859. Letter from Mr F W Le Geyt, Member of the Legislative Council, Calcutta. Submits a paper to the Governor General proposing reform in the civil administration of the staff of the Indian Army, by an anonymous author. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement, the Governor General has already received a copy of the paper anonymously.
5360. May 1859. Letter from Rajah Budinath Roy, Cossipore. Submits correspondence with the local authorities at Cuttack on the alterations and additions to the Dhurumsala at Balasore, he is willing to pay the cost, and asks which authority he should address on the subject. Copy of reply, he should address the local authorities. Correspondence no longer enclosed.

5362. Apr - May 1859. Letter from The Honourable Robert Montgomery, Officiating Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Lahore. Submits a copy of the 'Narrative of the Mutinies in Oudh'. (Not enclosed.) Note from the Bengal Military Orphan Press; receipt. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement, remarks on distribution of the pamphlet.

5364. May 1859. Letter from Dr J Forsyth, Director General, Medical Department Calcutta. In reply, about 3 candidates for the Simla appointment. Copy of earlier letter asking for information. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 5368, 5408.
5365. May 1859. Letter from Baboo Soobul Doss Mullick, Calcutta. Asks for a reply to his application to be allowed to attend the Governor General's levee. Copy of reply, his application was transferred to the Foreign Department.
5366. Mar - Apr 1859. Letter from the Honourable G C Talbot, Private Secretary to the Secretary of State, East India House, London. In reply, has sent the Governor General's letter to the Prince Consort. Comments on a political crisis in England; Lord John Russell is severely blamed for his needless artifice. The financial crisis in India has created much excitement. Talbot hopes Lord Clyde will not suffer for his zeal in going to Calcutta. Lady Canning will be much shocked to hear of Lord Waterford's death out hunting.

5368. Apr - May 1859. Letter from Dr G N Cheek, Officiating Garrison Surgeon of Chunar. Applies for the Joint Medical Charge of Simla. Note about Cheek. Copy of reply, he has been appointed to this post. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 5364, 5408.
5370. May 1859. Letter from Mr J Munton, Calcutta. Having being discharged from the band of the Artillery Corps without a pension, applies for aid. Cover only. Endorsed: Transferred to Colonel Stuart.
5371. May 1859. Letter from Mr C B Denison, Magistrate and Collector, Mirzapore. Advises the despatch of 3 carpets ordered by Lady Canning. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement, request for details of cost. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 463, 4778, 5386.

5373. Apr - May 1859. Letter from Mr C W West, Inspecting Post Master, Cannanore. Reports that the rebels in the north of Canana are likely to rise again if European troops are not stationed there. 1/2 anna stamp.
5374. May 1859. Letter from Mr E M Potter, late in the Chief Commissioner's Office, Lucknow. States that he has applied for a situation in the Thuggee and Dacoity Department and asks for the Private Secretary's good offices on his behalf. 1/2 anna stamp.
5375. May 1859. Letter from Mr H Atherton, Civil and Sessions Judge, Chuprah. Reports the condition of the destitute Europeans. Copy of letter to W Grey, Secretary to Government of India Home Department about this. (Atherton's letter no longer enclosed.) Copy of reply, the Private Secretary has asked Mr Grey to call the Lieutenant Governor's attention to the subject officially.
5376. Apr - May 1859. Letter from Captain T C Alban, Officiating Judge Advocate General at Kusseerabad, on leave, Surat. Asks to be allowed to resume his appointment as Officiating Assistant Resident at Baroda, and to be appointed permanently if Lieutenant Barton is not allowed to return to Baroda. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4265.
5377. May 1859. Letter from Mr R Manning, Calcutta. Asks for copies of the proceedings connected with the case of 'Manning v East India Company' in order that he may forward the same to a Member of the House of Commons. Forwards correspondence with the Railway authorities, showing that fraud and peculation are encouraged in the East Indian Railway as well as in the Public Works Department. Cover and copy of reply only. Copy of reply, Manning's papers have been transferred to the Public Works Department.
5378. May 1859. Letter from Baboo Praunath Bose, Calcutta. Forwards an application to the Governor General (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, returning the Baboo's papers, which the Private Secretary declines to lay before the Governor General. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 5068.
5379. May 1859. Copy of a letter to the Secretary of the Public Library, Metcalfe Hall. Returning Volume XCI of the Annual Register.
5380. May - Jun 1859. Letter from Mr H Wood, student, Bishop's College, Calcutta. Represents the straitened circumstances of himself and family in view of the supposed death of his father, Captain H Wood of the 3rd King's Own Light Dragoons, about whom nothing is known. 1/12 anna stamp. Copy of reply, enquiries have been made about Captain Wood, but nothing certain is known. The Governor General is not clear as to what Mr Wood desires. 5387. May 1859. Letter from Mr Lange, Calcutta. Asks how many tickets the Governor General will require for his concert. Copy of reply, the Governor General will take 6 tickets. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 5282.

5393. May 1859. Letter from Mr J B Roberts, Deputy Commissioner of Police and Coroner of Calcutta Asks for an interview with the Governor General on official business. Copy of reply, interview refused, please state business in writing.
5394. May 1859. Letter from Mr Hamilton Hume, Mohutpore, Kishnaghur. Sends a letter to the Governor General asking for employment. Copy of reply, he cannot be employed until he has passed the examination in the native language. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 5170, 5178, 5298. 5395. May 1859. Letter from Mr C Piffard, Barrister, Calcutta. Asks for permission for Mowfud Dowlah, a member of the household of the Ex-King of Oudh, to visit his master. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his letter has been transferred to the Foreign Department.
5396. May 1859. Letter from Mr C K Dove, Officiating Post Master General of Bengal, Calcutta. Having heard that he is to be permanently appointed, asks that his appointment may take effect on 9 July. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his letter has been transferred to the Home Department.
5397. May 1859. Letter from the Reverend W Kay, Principal Bishop's College, Calcutta. Further to Mr H Wood's character. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 5380, 5381.
5398. May 1859. Letter from Colonel A C Sterling C B, Military Secretary to the Commander-in-Chief, Simla. States that no letter has been received about the package alluded to in the Private Secretary's letter, and that Lord Clyde wishes the packet, if not already sent, to be opened. It is not likely that the Governor General's Order of the Bath should be sent to the Commander-in-Chief. Copy of earlier letter about the packet addressed to Lord Clyde.
5399. May 1859. Anonymous letter. Represents the inconvenience likely to arise from the publication in The Times by Mr Temple of a Secret Despatch and other important papers, and the necessity for his transfer from the Punjab to the North West Provinces.
5400. May - Jun 1859. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. Desires that Major Ellis be replaced at Bundelcund as soon as possible, and mentions the names of Major Meade and Captain Murray.
