Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 5501 to 5550, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 56 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 5501 to 5550’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 5502, 5508, 5510, 5511, 5521, 5522, 5527, 5530, 5531, 5533, 5534, 5535, 5539, 5542, 5545, 5546, 5548, and 5550 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

5504. Jun 1859. Letter from Dodabhoy Framjee, Manager of the Bombay Times, Bombay. Reply, has always carefully obeyed the Private Secretary's instructions in sending the Home News with the Express for the Governor General and the fault lies with the Deputy Postmaster General of Bombay, whose letter is enclosed. Copy of earlier letter complaining that the Home News to the address of the Private Secretary has not been sent by the Express according to custom

Submits with his recommendation a letter from Colonel C Hinde, Commandant of the Infantry Levies in Rewah, asking to be exempted from passing the examination required for officers on the staff. 5511. Jun 1859. Letter from Captain W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. In reply, returns thanks for the charge of Bundlecund; has offered the Assistantship to Lieutenant Gompertz, Officiating Adjutant of 1st Madras Native Infantry and makes suggestions about the salary. Copy of earlier letter, informing Osborne that Bundelcund is to be placed under him during Major Ellis' absence; his salary will be increased and he may have an additional Assistant. 5517. Jun 1859. Letter from Captain R D Dansey, Her Majesty's 3rd Madras Europeans, Special Assistant Engineer, Gwalior. As all the troops in the station are under cover, a work upon which he has been employed by Major Maxwell since 15 Feb and as the return of Captain Oliphant will necessitate his resuming his subordinate position, asks for some employment in a better climate than Gwalior. 5518. Jun 1859. Letter from Captain H F Evatt, 36th Madras Native Infantry, Officiating Interpreter, Her Majesty's 48th Foot, Cawnpore. Asks for the Private Secretary's influence to obtain for him the command of any local Irregular Regiment of levy, or any other kind of employment. 5519. Jun 1859. Petition of Mrs D Greenway, widow of the late Gunner J Greenway, 1st Artillery Company, European Invalid Battalion, Chunar. Reports that during her husband's service as Toll Collector at Rajghat he had charge of two toll bars; she has now been called upon to reimburse the amount of her husband's military pay during his employment as Toll Collector. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, her letter has been transferred to the Military Department.

5527. Jun 1859. Letter from Mrs W J Palmer, Ghazeepore. Asks for the Private Secretary's interest on behalf of a statement her husband will submit to vindicate his character with regard to the decision of Government, separating the offices of Civil Assistant Surgeon of the Ghazeepore Station and 1st Assistant and Opium Examiner Benares Opium Agency. Copy of reply, Dr Palmer's statement will receive careful attention, but should be sent officially. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 5562.
5528. May - Jun 1859 Letter from Major J C Brooke, Commandant Meywar Bheel Corps, Mount Aboo. Applies for the Kotah agency; would prefer the acting appointment in Meywar should it become vacant. 5529. Jun 1859. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. Reports that Captain Wilson, having been ordered to the Hills for his health, has sent for Major A L McMullin, 23rd Native Infantry Officiating Commandant Bhopal Levy to act as 1st Assistant and Deputy Opium Agent. Asks when the 2nd Assistant may be expected. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary has telegraphed to Shakespear to say that McMullin will be gazetted as 1st Assistant. Major Stuart Wortley, appointed 2nd Assistant, will leave Calcutta on 18 Jun. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 5482, 5531.
5530. Jun 1859. Letter from Mr St George Tucker, Commissioner in Oudh, Sultanpore, Oudh. States that his brother Henry is much disappointed at not having received a reply from the Governor General. Sultanpore is tranquil; Mahomed Hussein of Beehoopurh is dead and the only other notorious rebel in arms, Bhaywan Bux Singh, has been captured. Copy of reply, the Governor General will reply to Tucker's brother's letter shortly. Governor General's Book number 1172; See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 6258.
5531. Jun 1859. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore. In continuation of his previous letter about Scindia's 10 central districts, encloses an extract from a letter from General Sir R Napier stating that the Seronge charge requires the best officer available, as the whole of that vicinity from Saugor to Bhopal and to Harowtee is almost thrown back on its Pindaree condition of 50 years ago, and it requires close supervision of the native Amils to obviate the necessity of British interference to hunt down perpetually the victims of their oppression or injustice. Copy of reply, about various appointments; McMullin should be sent to Seronge, if he can be spared from Indore. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 5482, 5529.
5532. Jun 1859. Letter from Roy Tarracknath, Zemindar, Bhatparrah, Zillah Baraset, Bhatparrah. Asks for an interview with the Governor General to explain how certain waste lands which were excluded from assessment at the time of the permanent settlement by Lord Cornwallis may now be brought under assessment; and hopes that the Governor General may entrust him with authority to enquire into such matters regarding land as may add to the revenue of the Government. Copy of reply, the substance of his letter has been communicated to the Secretary to the Government of Bengal. Also copy of a letter to the Bengal Secretary. 5533. Jun 1859. Letter from Shah Kubeer Ooddeen Ahmed, Sasseeram. Asks for a reply to a Persian petition addressed by him to the Governor General and states that the title of Huzrut would be very acceptable to him as well as direct communication with the Governor General. Copy of reply, he will receive an answer from Mr Beadon. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 5570.
5534. Jun 1859. Letter from Mr W Ritchie, Advocate General, Calcutta. In reply, sends three books which will give information about oaths of allegiance taken by Members of Parliament and civil officers of the Crown. Copy of earlier letter asking for books.

Forwards copy of an extract from the Military Department about the appointment of a successor to Dr Peskett, removed from the office of Superintendent of Vaccination in the Hills. 5536. Jun 1859. Letter from Mr G O'Donnell, Deputy Superintendent of the Electric Telegraph in Bengal, Calcutta. Forwards a petition from the residents of Darjeeling in favour of the proposed Northern Bengal Railway, and asks for an appointment to discuss this with the Governor General (Letter and petition no longer enclosed). Copy of reply to O'Donnell, his letter and memorial have been transferred to the Railway Department.
5537. Jun 1859. Letter from Major General R J H Birch, Military Secretary, Calcutta. Submits with his recommendation an application from Surgeon E Hare, 2nd Bengal Fusiliers, for the office of Superintendent of Vaccination at Simla.
5538. Jun 1859. Letter from Lieutenant C W Burton, Interpreter, Her Majesty's 89th Regiment, Camp, Seronge. Asks if his application for a transfer from his present rank of unattached Local Lieutenant in Her Majesty's Indian Service to a full pay Lieutenant in one of the European Regiments of the Bengal Presidency has been received. Copy of reply, sending copy of an earlier reply. In Oct 1858 the Bombay Government was directed to confer upon Burton a local commission as Lieutenant of Infantry. 5539. Jun 1859. Letter from Colonel C MacKenzie, Governor General's Agent, Moorshedabad, Calcutta. States that owing to the absence of regular artillery from the station of Berhampore, the salute to the Agent at Moorshedabad was discontinued; asks whether he may now revive the practice. Copy of reply, the rules regarding salutes are now under revision; but the rule according to which salutes are only fired where there is a fort or battery, and only when the officer saluted leaves or returns to his post on business, and only when he is in uniform, will be adhered to.

5541. May - Jun 1859. Letter from Captain T C Alban, Officiating Judge Advocate General at Nusseerabad, on leave, Surat. Asks if he may withdraw his application for the permanent appointment at Baroda in succession to Lieutenant Barton.
5542. Jun 1859. Letter from Colonel A C Sterling, Military Secretary to Commander in Chief, Simla. Returns thanks for information about Messrs Allan and Hayes. Remarks on the mutinous spirit prevailing in some of the Company's European Regiments and believes the Government had no right to transfer the men's services. Lord Clyde, General Mansfield and Sir Hope Grant are quite against the policy adopted by the home Government. Believes from the state of the whole European Army, both in Bengal and in Bombay, that the officers never had the influence over their men which the officers of the Queen's regiments have. Will be glad if, in consequence of the Mutiny, the total extinction of a local European Army be effected.
5543. Jun 1859. Letter from Mr H C Sutherland, Assistant Collector in charge, Tipperah. Directs attention to his letter of 4 Feb and requests that the remittance therein alluded to may be made. 5545. Jul 1859. Letter from Mr G Couper, Secretary to Government North West Provinces, Allahabad. States that papers about Mr Dunne will be sent in a day or two; he has been recommended for the Mehal of Jhumshabad (?) in Azimgurh, belonging to the defunct rebel Rajah Tradat Khan. Requests the return of some papers relating to the case of Sirdar Khan, taken away by the Governor General from Allahabad. Copy of earlier letter about Dunne. Copy of reply, the reward proposed seems very suitable. Private Secretary will search for the papers about Sirdar Khan. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 5695.
