Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 5551 to 5600, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 56 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 5501 to 5600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 5551, 5558, 5561, 5562, 5568, 5569, 5572, 5574, 5575, 5577, 5581, 5583, 5584, 5590, 5591, 5597, and 5598 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

5553. Jun 1859. Letter from Captain R D Dansey, Her Majesty's 3rd Madras Europeans, Special Assistant Engineer, Gwalior. Applies for the appointment on the Dehra Dhoon New Road. 5558. Jun 1859. Letter from the Honourable Robert Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Murree. Returns thanks for the copies of the 'Oude Narrative' and states that a line from the Private Secretary to Major Hutchinson expressing the Governor General's satisfaction with the work would be gratefully received. In regard to the mutiny among the European regiments, believes that the only solution is to grant discharge to those who desire it, of whom at most 20 or 30% of the late Company's troops are likely to go. If there is neither bounty nor discharge, there will be bloodshed. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 5636
5559. Jun 1859. Letter from Captain G Dangerfield, Madras Artillery, Madras. Explains why he asked for a transfer from Pegu to regimental duty and hopes his application for re-employment on the staff will be favourably viewed. Three papers. Copy of reply, he has no claim to another appointment.

5561. Jun 1859. Letter from Mr C Wingfield, Chief Commissioner, Oudh, Lucknow. With reference to his previous letter concerning certain reports that many settlements in Oudh had been made temporarily with a promise of a future hearing, submits one of Major Barrow's circulars, which might throw light on the matter. 5562. Jun 1859. Letter from Dr W J Palmer, Civil Assistant Surgeon, Ghazeepore. Sends papers to show the falsity of the charge that he neglected the community at Ghazeepore. Covering letter only. 5563. Jun 1859. Letter from Mr C Bhogoppah, Sowcar, Bellary. Asks to be appointed Extra Assistant Commissioner in Hyderabad and sends copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Resident at Hyderabad.
5564. Jun 1859. Copy of a letter to Major General Birch, Secretary to Government of India, Military Department. Asking if the services of Lieutenant W Phaire, 54th Native Infantry are available for civil employment.
5565. Jun 1859 Letter from Dr A Christison, Superintendent of Vaccination, Agra Division, Agra. Returns thanks for his appointment as Superintendent of Vaccination at Simla. Copy of earlier letter informing him of his appointment.
5568. Jun 1859. Letter from Captain W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. Does not believe his appointment to Bundlecund in subordination to Sir R Shakespear in the present unsettled state of that country would in any way be conducive to the interest of Government, while it would materially weaken his influence in his own District. 5569. Jun 1859. Letter from Captain W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. Further to the preceding letter (number 5568) believes Bundlecund requires an Assistant with independent authority. 5571. Jun 1859. Letter from Lieutenant W J Phaire, 54th Native Infantry, Barrackpore. Returns thanks for his appointment as Junior Assistant to the Commissioner of Chota Nagpore. Copy of earlier letter offering him the appointment.
5572. Jun 1859. Letter from Mr G Couper, Secretary to Government, North West Provinces, Allahabad. In reply, submits a few particulars of the last moments of Mrs Edmonstone. The Lieutenant Governor was far from well before the event and is now slowly recovering from the shock and requires change of air and scene. Mr Reade is conducting the current business of the Government. Couper cannot think why Reade's merits have been overlooked. Copy of earlier letter asking for information about Mrs Edmonstone's death.

5577. Jun 1859. Letter from Lieutenant General the Honourable Sir James Outram, Member of the Supreme Council, Calcutta. Sends a letter from Major L Barrow, in explanation of Barrow's misrepresentation of the Proclamation.

5579. Jun 1859. Letter from Lieutenant J A Heathcote, Assistant Secretary to the Superintendent of Marine, Calcutta. With reference to his application for the Superintendency of Port Blair states that owing to ill health he has been obliged to apply for sick leave to Europe for 15 months.

5581. Jun 1859. Memorandum by Colonel O Cavenagh, Town Major, Fort William. With reference to his memorandum of 17 Feb 1858, submits a letter from Mr Langley (no longer enclosed), requesting Cavenagh to bring to the notice of the ex-King of Oudh his desire to be appointed Tutor to the young Prince during his stay in Europe, together with his draft reply. Copy of reply about this.

5591. Jun 1859. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent, Central India, Indore. Acknowledges receipt of letter of 2 Jun. Other arrangements not being feasible, he intends to go in person to settle the 10 central districts of Scindia and to arrange Mann Singh's affairs; he would like to pass all Aug in Bundlekund where, with Captain Thompson's aid, he hopes to put matters into a satisfactory state. Submits a plan of the proposed alteration of the colonnades of St John's Church and a letter from the Civil Architect of 2 Mar 1858 giving an estimate; also a plan for the more expensive alteration of the eastern portico. Covering letter only. Copy of reply, sending 250 Rupees from the Governor General for the improvements to the carriage approach of St John's Church, and returning a letter and plans. 5598. May - Jul 1859. Letter from Captain G G Pearse, Madras Artillery, Commanding 3rd Sikh Irregular Cavalry, on leave, London. Asks for mercy for Mirza Baz Beg, late Deputy Collector and Magistrate of Hissar, who is now undergoing a sentence of 10 years' imprisonment on the charge of failure to protect the English ladies and not giving them burial after their murder at Hissar; refers to his own services during the Mutiny, and states that he is greatly indebted to the Mirza for holding Hissar. Copy of reply, the Governor General has consulted Sir Robert Montgomery and studied the papers in the case, and sees no reason to interfere with the Mirza's sentence. 5600. Jun 1859. Letter from Captain T Dennehy, Commanding Allahabad Military Divisional Police Battalion, Allahabad. Submits a petition from one of his Ressaldars asking for the grant to him of 2 Sheers or Jungle lands in the District of Jhujjur. Letter and petition no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, the papers have been transferred to the Foreign Secretary, who will write to the Punjab Government on the subject.
