Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 5601 to 5650, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 57 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 5601 to 5700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 5605, 5607, 5610, 5611, 5612, 5614, 5616, 5620, 5621, 5623, 5629, 5633, 5636, 5637, 5645, and 5650 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
5601. Jun 1859. Letter from Mr W G D'Gruyther, Allahabad. Submits a scheme for the issue of a paper currency (No longer enclosed). Copy of reply, his scheme has been transferred to the Financial Department. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 5342
5602. Jun 1859 Copy of a letter to Mr Cecil Beadon, Calcutta. Stating that the Governor General has sent in circulation a minute on the 'Defence of Egypt' which he wishes to go home by the mail of 25 Jun to Bombay.
5603. Jun 1859. Copy of a letter to Mr H B Harington, Calcutta. Asking him to write to Mr F Gubbins in the manner Harington proposed.
5604. Jun 1859 Letter from Captain C S Lemarchand, 2nd Company 6th Battalion Artillery, Agra. Refers to his services during the Mutiny and asks for a civil or political appointment in Central India. Copy of reply, application noted, the Governor General cannot hold out any hope of an appointment in Central India.
5605. Jun 1859. Letter from Mr Cecil Beadon, Secretary to Government of India Foreign Department, Calcutta. Submits with remarks a list of the vernacular translations of the Queen's Proclamation. Copy of reply, the Governor General wishes to have 5 copies of each of the translations. There ought certainly to have been a Pushtoo [Pashto] version for the Afghans, though there is probably no European officer competent to make one, except Captain Raverty, ex-Assistant Commissioner of Mooltan. Other remarks.
5606. Jun 1859 Letter from Lieutenant L C Barton, Assistant Resident, Baroda, Camp, Bhooj. Returns thanks for his reappointment to the Baroda Residency.
5607. Jun 1859. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. Having made some disparaging remarks about Captain Mayne in a note of 25 May, submits in explanation a correspondence with Mayne on the subject of his unpopularity with the Rajpoot Chiefs; he believes Mayne's energy and ability may be made useful, and his defects controlled. Refers to Major Macpherson's shortcomings. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 5482
5608. Jun 1859. Letter from Mr R A Williamson, Officiating Director General of the Post Office in India, Calcutta. Returns thanks for his appointment.
5609. Jun - Aug 1859. Letter from Mr C F Harvey, Magistrate, Dacca. Acknowledges receipt of a letter sending a petition from Shaik Meajan, he will look into the matter. Copies of two earlier letters.
5610. Jul 1859. Letter from the Honourable Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Murree. In reply, submits a memorandum about the case of Mirza Shah Baz Beg, late uncovenanted Collector of Hissar, and also a copy of Mr Thornton's report on him. The man was not loyal, and was imprisoned for life, but his sentence was remitted by Sir J Lawrence. Copy of earlier letter sending a letter about the Mirza. 5611. Jun 1859. Copy of a letter to Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Government of India Foreign Department, Calcutta. Sending him papers about a Beer [grass jungle] in the Jhujjur District, which Captain Dennehy wishes may be granted to some of his native officers who have behaved well.
5612. Jun 1859. Letter from Mr T D Forsyth, Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh. States that among the collection of swords taken from the people there were no good specimens; he will gradually collect good swords for the Governor General.
5613. Jun 1859. Letter from Mr N Lange, Calcutta. Asks permission to advertise another concert under the patronage of the Governor General and states that he is in great distress. Copy of reply, the Governor General will take 6 tickets.
5614. Jun 1859 Copy of a letter to A R Young Esquire, Secretary to the Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Sending him a letter from a petty chief on the borders of Bhootan [Bhutan], asking for the letter to be returned. Letter enclosed; part in the Tibetan character; complaining of robberies said to have been committed by dacoits from the British territories.
5615. Jun 1859. Letter from Dr J F Steuart, Field Assistant Surgeon, Lucknow. Applies for the Joint Civil Surgeoncy of Simla. Copy of reply, acknowledgement, there is no vacancy at present.
5616. Jun 1859. Letter from Sirdar Soorut Singh, Calcutta. Asks for the Governor General to be reminded that his case has not yet been disposed of. In the vernacular.
5617. Jun 1859. Copy of a letter to J Murray Esquire, Calcutta. His Memorial has been transferred to Mr Grey.
5618. Jun 1859. Letter from Captain W D Dickson, Officiating Assistant to the General Superintendent of Thuggee and Dacoity, Belgaum. Returns thanks for his appointment; would like to be considered for permanent employment. Copy of reply, application noted.
5619. Jun 1859. Letter from Major C Hervey, Officiating General Superintendent Thuggee and Dacoity Department, Jubbulpore. Asks permission to apply to the Brigadier Commanding at Jubbulpore for the services of a competent officer to receive charge of the office of Assistant General Superintendent from Captain Gib who is to ask for sick leave. 5620. Jun 1859. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore. Reports that at an interview Holkar expressed some concern at the non-receipt of a reply to His Highness' Khureeta to Sir R Hamilton about adoption. Comments on the Queen's Proclamation.

Sends two copies of notes on private companies for canals of irrigation and navigation, and the only remaining copy of the Governor General's Minute on the subject (No enclosures remain).
5624. Jun - Jul 1859. Letter from Lieutenant A C Lilly, 1st Infantry Hyderabad Contingent, Bolarum. Asks for political employment in Central India or elsewhere. Copy of reply, application noted, the Governor General cannot hold out any promise of employment.

5629. Jun - Jul 1859. Letter from the Honourable Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Murree. Forwards a detailed account by Captain Mercer, the Marriage Registrar of the Jullundhur district, of the marriage of the Rajah of Kuppoorthulla with an East Indian lady, and a letter from Major Lake giving a different version as to the feeling of the Rajah's people upon the occasion. There is little doubt that the Rajah has long been a Christian, and that he will eventually profess this openly; but all officers have been warned to leave him to decide as he thinks best.

Returns the Life of G Stephenson; believes India would benefit greatly from his (Gower's) Road Locomotive and asks for his drawings to be forwarded to England with an order for one engine. 5638. Jul 1859. Memorial of the members of the late Agra Militia. Asking for compensation for their losses, and the grant of 6 months batta. If Lord Canning cannot comply with their request, ask for their Memorial to be sent to Lord Stanley for submission to the Queen. Cover only. 5646. Jul 1859. Letter from Mr E M Potter, late Chief Commissioner 's Office, Oudh, Lucknow. Renews his request for reconsideration of his case. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, request refused, it is useless for him to address the Private Secretary again.
5647. Jul 1859. Letter from Mrs A F De Bruyn, Calcutta. Sends a petition asking for money to Lady Canning (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, returning the petition, which should be sent through the Post Office. 5649. Jun - Jul 1859. Letter from Assistant Surgeon T M Lowndes, Honorary Secretary and Treasurer, Aboo Lawrence School. With reference to an extract in the Bombay Standard alleging the adoption of the Lawrence Asylums at Sonawur, Mount Aboo and Ootacamund had been sanctioned by Lord Stanley, but that Lord Canning had recommended the exclusion of the Institution at Aboo, deprecates such a step. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his letter has been sent to the Foreign Department.
5650. Jun - Jul 1859. Letter from Mr H Newton, Joint Judge and Sessions Judge, Tanna. Asks to be transferred from the Judicial to the Account Department and applies to be Sub-Treasurer at Bombay, or any other office in the Account Branch. 5 papers. Copy of reply about this.
