Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 5701 to 5750, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 58 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 5701 to 5800’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 5701, 5702, 5708, 5709, 5712, 5716, 5717, 5721, 5723, 5733, 5743, 5744, 5746, and 5749 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
5701. Jan 1859. Memorandum from F B Gubbins Esquire, Commissioner 5th Division, to Secretary to Government North West Provinces. Suggesting the advisability of extending the Punjab system of levying a slight yearly tax upon the licences granted for carrying arms.
5702. Jun 1859. Extract from a demi-official letter from Mr Blundell, Singapore. To Mr Grey, setting out various objections to the transfer of Singapore from the authority of the Government of India to that of the Colonial Office. 2 copies
5708. Apr - Jul 1859. Letter from Captain W N Lees, Principal of the Calcutta Madressa, Calcutta. Comments on certain parts of Major Barrow's letter to the Nawab of Furrackabad, as compared with a passage in the authorized version of the Queen's proclamation. 5709. Jul 1859. Letter from the Reverend J Coley, Chaplain attached to St John's Church, Calcutta. In reply, is not aware of any rule against the admission of sailors in their frocks to St John's Church, but as it was the policeman who refused admittance, will make inquiries from the Chief Magistrate. 5710. Jul 1859. Letter from Major C Hervey, Officiating General Superintendent for the Suppression of Thuggee and Dacoity, Jubbulpur. In reply, gives his reasons for not having applied in the first instance to the Commanding Officer at Jubbulpore for the services of an officer to act for Captain Gib. 5711. Jul 1859. Letter from Captain A C Plowden, Private Secretary. To the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, Calcutta. Acknowledges receipt of the Private Secretary's letter and states that Jageer Gulliah has been paid his pension and that his descriptive roll is in good order. 5712. Jul 1859. Memorandum by Mr A M Dowleans, Municipal Commissioner, Calcutta. Makes various suggestions as to ways of raising loans for the Government.
5713. Jul 1859. Letter from Mr F Gouldsbury, Commissioner, Berhampore. Asks if the Government has received any official confirmation of Mr Beadon's appointment to the vacancy in the Supreme Council. Copy of reply, the Governor General has no intimation as yet as to who is to be appointed.
5714. Jul 1859. Letter from Mr Mark Pitamber Pall, native convert, Serampore. Asks to be appointed Deputy Magistrate. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.
5715. Jul 1859. Letter from the Reverend M D C Walters, Chaplain, St James' Church, Calcutta. Asks for a subscription towards his schools. Copy of reply sending 200 Rupees. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 5724
5716. Jul 1859. Letter from Mr B Lowsey, on board the ship 'Calliope', Baboo Ghat, Calcutta. Complains of having been refused admission into St John's Church by a policeman. Original reply returned as the 'Calliope' had sailed. Copy of reply, the policeman had no authority to refuse Lowsey admission. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence nos. 5709, 5717

5718. Jun - Jul 1859. Letter from Major J G Balmain, Madras Artillery, late Deputy Commissioner Raichore Doab, on leave, Bath. Mentions the circumstances under which, owing to the negligence of the Telegraph Department at Madras, he now finds himself after a long servitude deprived of his appointment. 5721. Jul 1859. Letter from Mr G Couper, Secretary to Government North West Provinces, Allahabad. Replies about Mr Money; asks for the return of the papers about Sirdar Khan. 5723. Jun 1859. Memorandum from G Plowden, Commissioner of Nagpore, to C Beadon, Secretary to Government of India Foreign Department, Fort William. Sending two statements, one showing the number of wild animals of each kind killed, and the other showing the number of persons killed and wounded by wild animals in the Nagpore Province in 1858.
5724. Jul 1859. Letter from the Reverend M D C Walters, Chaplain of St James' Church, Calcutta. Returns thanks for the Governor General's donation of 200 Rupees to his schools. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 5715
5725. Jul 1859. Letter from Major G R Edwards, 2nd Madras Light Cavalry, Jaulnah. Applies to be Military Assistant to the Commissioner of Mysore. 5726. Jul 1859. Letter from Mr J Chopin, Assistant in the Home Office, Calcutta. Sends a letter and a list for the Governor General about his projected publication (list no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, the Governor General will take 3 copies, but cannot agree to give the sanction of his name to the work until he has inspected it. 5727. Jul 1859. Letter from Baboo Hur Chunder Dutt, Auditor of the Accounts of the Regimental Savings Bank, Calcutta. Applies for the post of Assistant Sub-Treasurer, with copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, acknowledgement
5728. Jul 1859. Copy of a letter to the Magistrate of Hooghly. Sending him a memorandum of a statement made by Kadir Buksh Duffadar, of the Governor General's Establishment. The Private Secretary is unable to give him any further leave to prosecute his case.
5729. Jul 1859. Letter from Prince Ranindra Vieram Shah, 3rd Prince of Nepal, Benares. States that owing to the neglect of the Nepalese Durbar he is in straitened circumstances, and contemplates applying to Government for the grant of forfeited estates in Azimghur or Goruckpore, and asks for the Private Secretary's advice. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his letter has been transferred to the Foreign Department.

5735. Jul 1859. Letter from the Right Reverend Dr J Persico, Vicar Apostolic of Agra, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General. Copy of reply, arranging an interview.
5737. Jul 1859. Letter from Lieutenant General the Honourable Sir James Outram, Calcutta. Sends answers to the Governor General's letters addressed to him conveying the thanks of Parliament, and explains his delay in replying.

5746. Jul 1859. Letter from Captain R de Bourbel, Officiating Executive Engineer, Barrackpore Division, Barrackpore. Submits a design for new stairs to the river face of the Government House at Barrackpore (Plan no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, the Governor General considers the plan excellent, but does not wish the work to be carried out while the present restriction on expenditure lasts.
