Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 5751 to 5800, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 58 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 5701 to 5800’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 5754, 5755, 5760, 5762, 5768, 5771, 5772, 5774, 5783, 5785, 5788, 5791, 5792, 5794, 5795, 5796, 5797, 5798, 5799, and 5800 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
5751. Jul 1859. Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Recommends Lieutenant R O H Forbes, 3rd Europeans, for a vacancy among the Assistant Commissioners in Oudh. Note from Mr Beadon about a temporary vacancy in Oudh. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 5750
5752. Jul 1859. Letter from Mr C A Railey, Calcutta. Asks to be appointed Deputy Magistrate in the Upper Provinces. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Lieutenant Governor.
5753. Jul 1859. Petition of Baboo Keshub Lai Ghose, Calcutta. Complains of the proceedings of Colonel Ramsay, the Resident at Nepal, resulting in the removal of the petitioner from the office of Keer Moonshee of the Nepal Residency on the grounds of his incompetence, prays for redress. Covering letter only. Copy of reply, his papers have been transferred to the Foreign Department.
5754. Jul 1859. Letter from Mr J M Erskine, Civil Auditor, North West Provinces, on special duty, Bombay. In the belief that Mr Newton is to succeed Mr Gregor Grant in the office of Sub Treasurer, points out his superior claims to the appointment. 5755. Jul 1859. Letter from Dr A Campbell, Superintendent of Darjeeling, Darjeeling. Submits copies of correspondence with the Government of Bengal and the Revenue Board on the subject of his very peculiar position in the public service, and asks for an increase of his allowances, and asks to be considered when the Nepal Residency becomes vacant. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not think Campbell has any just cause for complaint. He cannot consider raising any salaries in the present financial condition of the Government. The Governor General cannot hold out any hope of Campbell being appointed to the Residency. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence nos. 5823, 9455
5756. Jul 1859. Letter from Major S R Tickell, 31st Native Infantry, Deputy Commissioner Tenasserim and Martaban Provinces, Moulmein. Applies to be appointed to the Commissionership of the Provinces should Major Phayre resign; should he be superseded by Major Fytche, his junior, asks to be spared the mortification of being retained in his present position. Copy of reply, application noted, the Governor General has no knowledge of Major Phayre's intention to resign. 5767. Jul 1859. Letter from Major R C Tytler, 38 Light Infantry, Calcutta. Understanding that Captain Haughton had accepted the Andaman appointment in ignorance of the offer of the Shaigueen appointment, and only adheres to the Andaman appointment from a sense of duty, asks that the circumstances may be mentioned to the Governor General; offers his own services for the Superintendency of the Andamans. 3 papers. Copy of reply, application noted. The Governor General has no reason to suppose Haughton was ignorant of his chances of the Martaban appointment. 5772. Aug 1859. Letter from Mr K H Davies, Secretary, Punjab Government, Lahore. In reply, a copy of the Punjab Gazette will be sent to the Private Secretary. Captain R Maclagan of Roorkee is the best officer for the appointment of Director of Public Instruction. The Punjab Government is flourishing, but is short of funds. Believes that a Tobacco Tax would be very productive without raising murmurs; though, like the Salt Tax it is a most unjust and grinding impost, it is paid by the people ungrudgingly. Copy of earlier letter asking for a copy of the Punjab Gazette to be sent to the Private Secretary regularly; also about the post of Director of Public Instruction. 5775. Jul 1859. Letter from Mr H Newton, Officiating Sub Treasurer, Bombay. Returns thanks for a letter of 5 Jul and now applies for employment generally in the Account Department and asks for exemption from passing the usual examination for the reasons assigned. Copy of reply, the Chief Commissioner believes that it is unlikely that Bradford will be able to keep his Officiating rank unless some unforeseen vacancy occurs. 5781. Aug 1859. Letter from Mr C H Lushington, Secretary to the Government of India, Financial Department Calcutta. Acknowledges receipt of Mr Lloyd's application and states that he will have it registered. He is ready to receive the other applications, or, if the Private Secretary prefers, will supply a memorandum of appointments likely to become vacant. Forwards an extract of a letter from Mr A H Cocks to Mr Thornhill to the effect that the vast majority of the landed proprietors and tenants and merchants in Eta, Allygurh and Mynpoorie are not against the British Government, but rejoice in their restoration.

5794. Jan - Aug 1859. Letter from Mr E A Reade, Senior Member of the Sudder Board of Revenue, Agra. Reports on the result of the collection of the Land and other revenues. Mr G Harvey agrees to the removal of Mr Parsick from Agra.
5795. Jul - Aug 1859. Letter from Major P A P Bouverie, Political Agent, Bhurtpore. Asks whether the Governor General would like to have a complete suit of armour at a cost of 648 Rupees. Remarks upon Mr Wilson's appointment to the Indian Council and upon the change of Ministry. With regard to the discharges to the Company's European soldiers, believes that the Government order was a mistake; and that if Her Majesty 's Army were allowed the same choice, every soldier and perhaps officer would take his discharge. The Private Secretary's suggestion that Putteala [Patiala] should take charge of the Bhurtpore Raj is not a bad idea, but the Government and people will not submit to it. He himself is for non-interference with native states. Copy of reply, the Governor General will take all the armour mentioned, and would like to know the history of it.

5797. Aug 1858 - Jul 1859. Letter from Mr W Glynn, Deputy Magistrate and Deputy Collector, Futtehpore. Submits papers showing that the rebels are quarrelling amongst themselves (2 papers in the vernacular). Has invited Dildar Ali to an interview. Various rebels have been making overtures about surrendering themselves. Denies having advocated an amnesty to the Mutineers as supposed by Mr Carnegy, and explains his policy.
5798. Aug 1858 - Jul 1859. Letter from Mr W Glynn, Deputy Magistrate and Deputy Collector, Futtehpore. Submits certain suggestions as the result of his interview with Dildar Ali Naib Nazim, and recommends his employment in obtaining information about the Oudh rebels. A force of less than 1,500 or 2,000 men is sure to be opposed by the Oudh rebels. The occupation of Pertabgurh is recommended. The Rajah of Amethee was for neutrality, but yielded to rebel influence; Dildar Ali will find out if he wishes to surrender unconditionally, when his protection of Mrs Goldney, Mrs Block and Mrs Stroyan will be taken into account. Hunwunt Sing at heart not against the British, he and others are disposed to assist when the British appear in strength. Reports the whereabouts of various rebels. Believes the Begum and others will find safety in Nepal. The rebels are making their own ammunition, and are being sold grain by the Bunjaras (?).
5799. Sep 1858 - Jul 1859. Letter from Mr W Glynn, Deputy Magistrate and Deputy Collector, Futtehpore. Reports that Benee Madho with 5000 sepoys has fallen back upon Saline, and other rebel movements. Encloses another Urzee from a sowar, asking permission to return to his home, and expresses his great regret that nothing has as yet been done about the men whose cases were submitted in July. He is going to Bhittoura with Mr Power to see about the facilities for a bridge of boats. Three enclosures, in the vernacular.
5800. Sep 1858 - Jul 1859. Letter from Mr W Glynn. Sends a reply to a note from Mr Lowe to the Shah Sahib in Oudh, and asks for instructions about the request of a Ressaldar of Gootrie in Oudh, who is now hard pressed by the rebels, to retire to this side of the river. Gives movements of the rebels. Has put Rissaldar Furjund Ali in possession of a couple of confiscated villages for his loyalty and services. Proposes to raise a few Sowars and Matchlockmen to guard some of the Ghats. One enclosure, in the vernacular. Office memorandum about the letters of Mr Glynn; note by Canning that the letters are not to be made official, but to be kept in the Private Secretary's office.
