Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 5851 to 5900, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 59 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 5801 to 5900’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 5856, 5857, 5858, 5859, 5860, 5861, 5862, 5869, 5875, 5876, 5877, 5880, 5883, 5884, 5886, 5891, 5894, 5896, and 5897 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

5852. Jul - Aug 1859.Letter from Captain W D Dickson, Officiating Assistant General Superintendent Thuggee and Dacoity Department, Belgaum. Applies for the appointment of Director of Public Instruction in Mysore. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot hold out any hope of Dickson's obtaining this post.
5853. Aug 1859.Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to Government Foreign Department, Calcutta. Sends papers (no longer enclosed), and observes that a recent despatch in the Home Department expresses Lord Stanley's opinion that Education Officers should as a rule be uncovenanted.
5854. Aug 1859. Copy of a letter to Major General Sir R Napier, Commanding at Gwalior. Sending a letter to be forwarded to Sir R Shakespear.
5855.Aug 1859. Letter from Captain Charles Elliot, Deputy Commissioner of Raipoor. Asks to be appointed Superintendent of the Nuggur Division in Mysore, should Major J F Porter, the present Superintendent, become Military Secretary. 2 letters. 5856. Aug 1859.Copy of a letter to the Honourable Sir R Montgomery, Lahore. Sending him a copy of the Governor General's Minute on the services of civilians during the Mutiny (not enclosed).
5857. Aug 1859. Copy of a reply to Lieutenant Colonel H Ramsay, Camp, Gurhwal, Kumaon. His letter about the customs charges on the present designed for the Nawab of Rampoor by the residents of Naini Tal has been transferred to the Home Department.
5858. Aug 1859. Letter from Mr George Couper, Secretary to Government North West Provinces, Allahabad. States that papers for Sir R Shakespear should be sent through Mr Mayne of Banda. Captain Taylor fears a general rising of the whole of the Bundlecund Thakoors, and Captain Pinkney, who is hurrying to Chundeyree from Hameerpore, does not anticipate anything beyond a partial rising of the Chundeyree Thakoors, owing to the inaction of the Force at Lullutpore. Couper states that a paper has just been discovered from which it may be possible to prove that Khydgunge was confiscated by Mr Court in Oct 1857. The Governor General may wish to await the result of the present investigation before passing any final orders. Copy of earlier letter, sending an urgent letter to Sir R Shakespear. 5859. Aug 1859. Copy of a letter to Colonel Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent, Bundlecund, via Banda and Chutterpoor. Telling him that copies of the Governor General's letters to him of 14 and 15 Aug had been sent to him from Allahabad, as well as the original letters via Gwalior. 5860. Aug - Sep 1859. Letter from Colonel C Davidson, Resident at Hyderabad. Acknowledges receipt of letter of 16 Aug, he understood the Governor General to allude to the official notice taken of 15 Mar by the Foreign Secretary, and not to any official notice by the Secretary of State from whom he does not expect recognition. Comments on Captain M Tayler's leave of absence to England. Copy of earlier letter, the Governor General was mistaken in speaking of an official notice having been received from the Secretary of State of the proceedings at Hyderabad in March. Asks if there would be any difficulty in granting Taylor leave of absence to England.

5862. Jul - Aug 1859. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel C E Faber, Madras Engineers, late Chief Engineer Public Works Department, Ootacamund. Submits a printed statement of the circumstances of his resignation and asks to be appointed Chief Engineer in various places. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot interfere in any selection of officers which the Government of Madras may make. His application for a post will be considered, the Governor General cannot make any promise, but his testimonial from Colonel Arthur Cotton commands the Governor General's greatest respect. 5865. Aug 1859. Letter from Mr W P Palmer, Civil Auditor, Calcutta. Forwards a list of Covenanted Civil Servants, with their salaries as on 1 May (no longer enclosed)
5866. Aug 1859. Letter from Mr John Ellis, late Bengal Yeomanry Cavalry, Calcutta. Sends a Memorial asking for employment, names the Calcutta Police or the Railway Department. Copy of reply, he should write to the local authorities.
5867. Aug 1859. Letter from Mr B F Singer, Extra Assistant Nagpore, on leave, Calcutta. Applies for the appointment of Agent for Government Consignments which is about to be created. Copy of reply, request refused, Private Secretary is not aware that such a post is contemplated.
5868. Aug 1859. Letter from Mr R Simson, Under Secretary Foreign Department, Calcutta. In reply, states that there is 1 vacancy in the 3rd grade of Assistant Commissioners in Oudh.
5869. Aug 1859. Letter from Koowar Rughoobur Singh of Chundra Zillah Seetapore, Bhawaneepore. Asks for an interview to submit proposals in connection with the coercion of the rebel chiefs still in arms on the frontiers of Oudh. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary will be glad to see him.
5870. Aug 1859. Letter from Mr J B Howard, Allahabad. Sends a letter to the Governor General reapplying for employment in consideration of his losses and services during the siege of Lucknow. 5875. Aug 1859. Letter from Mr C Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Seetapore. States that the nomination of an outsider to the vacant post of 2nd class Assistant Commissioner would interfere with his arrangements for appointing a Civil Judge to Lucknow, and mentions his arrangements by which he hopes to make up the salary of the new office. 5877. Aug 1859. Letter from Mr J Briggs, Howrah. Has invented an engine which will work punkahs as perfectly as by human power, and offers to construct one for Government House. Copy of reply, if he could inform the Private Secretary of any place where his punkah is at work, His Excellency will send someone to inspect it; but before this is done, he cannot sanction its being tried in Government House. 5887. Aug 1859. Letter from Lieutenant T Acton, 53rd Foot, 2nd Assistant Political Agent at Rewah. Has heard that his regiment has been ordered to Calcutta, en route to China, and as this is sure to affect his appointment at Rewah, explains why he did not exchange into another regiment.

5891. Aug - Sep 1859. Letter from Captain W Osborne, Political agent, Rewah. About the policy to be pursued towards Rewah. Though the deportation of the Sirdars will be very unpopular, it is absolutely necessary. Gives Mr Coles' message from Furzund Ally. Copy of earlier letter, the Governor General is almost certain that he will not after all be able to make the tour in Bundlecund of which he spoke; suggests receiving the Rewah Rajah at Cawnpore, and asks for Osborne's opinion.
