Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 5901 to 5950, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 60 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 5901 to 6000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 5904, 5905, 5910, 5912a, 5915, 5917, 5928, 5930, 5931, 5936, 5937, 5946, 5949, and 5950 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

5902. Aug 1859. Letter from Mr J Chopin, Assistant in the Home Department, Calcutta. Sends a letter and a subscription list for the Governor General (list no longer enclosed). 5904. Aug 1859. Letter from Lieutenant General Sir James Outram, Member of the Supreme Council, Calcutta. Sends an extract of a letter from Captain Meade to Colonel Eyre expressing surprise at not having heard from the authorities about the capture of Tantia Topi, and at the injudicious treatment of Maun Singh by Major Macpherson and Sir R Napier, and giving an account of a total defeat of the rebels on 30 July at a place 30 miles off across the Sind.
5905. Aug 1859. Letter from Rajah Pertab Chunder Singh, Packparrah. Asks the Governor General to attend a theatrical entertainment at the Rajah's garden house at Belgachia. Copy of reply, polite refusal. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 5913
5906. Aug 1859. Letter from Major R C Tytler, 30th Light Infantry, Calcutta. 5909. Aug 1859. Copy of a letter to C Beadon Esquire, Foreign Department. Sending him a letter given by Sir Mordaunt Wells to the Private Secretary, written by James Porter.
5910. Sep 1859. Letter from Captain J K Couper, Officiating Deputy Superintendent Stud Department Buxar. In reply says that the stud land has been restored and is now under cultivation; would like the Governor General to see the Stud. Copy of earlier letter; copy of reply, the Governor General and party are to travel by Dak and not by river; they expect to be at Benares by 12 Oct but as the Governor General goes straight on to Allahabad he will not have time to visit the studs.
5911. Aug 1859. Copy of a letter to J Forsyth Esquire, Director General of Medical Services. The Governor General is willing to appoint Dr Barlow as Medical Officer at Amherst, should no covenanted officer be available; has he any officer to recommend? Sends a letter and books of the Royal Society of Antiquaries at Copenhagen (no longer enclosed) and asks if the Governor General would like to be proposed as a member. Copy of reply, polite refusal. 5916. Aug 1859. Letter from Mr E A Phillips, Ballegunge, Calcutta. Sends a Memorial to the Governor General (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, his Memorial has been transferred to the Home Department. Also original reply, returned because the addressee was not found.
5917. Aug 1859. Letter from Lord William Hay, Deputy Commissioner Simla. Having heard that the Governor General may spend the forthcoming summer at Simla, offers his services in securing horses and ponies. Copy of reply, the Governor General's plans are still uncertain.
5918. Aug 1859. Letter from Signor Louis Feroni, Professor of Gymnastics, an acrobat, Calcutta. Asks to be allowed to erect a temporary building in the Maidan for his performance. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot interfere.
5919. Aug 1859. Letter from Mr C Wingfield , Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Recommends Lieutenant Grace of the Madras Army for the Oudh Commission. Copy of reply, Grace has been appointed to the Nagpore Commission, and the Governor General does not wish to make any change in this appointment. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 5923

5923. Aug - Sep 1859. Letter from Lieutenant C H Grace, 30th Madras Native Infantry, Calcutta. Is on the point of starting for Nagpore, but as Mr Wingfield is willing to appoint him to the Oudh Commission, asks that this may be mentioned to the Governor General if the Private Secretary believes His Excellency would consent to his transfer to Oudh. 1 enclosure. 5930. Sep 1859. Letter from Mr W Grey, Secretary to Government of India Home Department, Calcutta. States that the only request made to Bombay seems to have been for a list of officers entitled to the medal. Private Secretary's note to Mr Beadon and Beadon's note to Mr Grey on the subject enclosed. Copy of earlier letter asking for an official letter to be prepared, calling on the Bombay Government to furnish a list of civilians, or officers in civil employment, who distinguished themselves during the Mutiny.
5931. Sep 1859. Letter from Rajah Radhakaut Bahadoor, Calcutta. In reply, returns some pamphlets which are intended for the Governor General (not enclosed). Asks to know the Governor General's opinion of the Dissertation of His Majesty King Frederick VII on the construction of the old Giant Graves, to communicate to the Society. Copy of reply, the Governor General's time is at present so completely taken up with public business that he has not had time to peruse the dissertation in question. 5933. Aug - Sep 1859. Letter from Mr W J Money, Civil Service on sick leave, Mussoorie. Renews his request for recognition of his services; is willing to accept any appointment. Copy of reply, Private Secretary has already written explaining why he cannot be promoted; for a re-transfer he must find an officer who will exchange with him, and obtain the permission of the 2 Lieutenant Governors affected. 5934. Aug - Sep 1859. Letter from Mr W Ford, Deputy Commissioner Goorgaon. Applies for political employment, with enclosures. Copy of reply, there are already far too many applicants for the very contracted size of the Political Department and Private Secretary thinks Ford will have no chance at all of a post. Surely he must be very near to a Commissionership in the Punjab.
5935. Sep 1859. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Superintendent of Barrackpore Park. Reports that a party of the Eastern Bengal Railway Company are clearing the jungle just outside the South Gate of the Park to build sheds and ghats for landing stores for the Railway Company, and as the ground was leased to Government in 1856 for Park purposes, asks for orders. Copy of reply, the Governor General has no objection to the Company's activities.
5936. Sep 1859. Letter from Mr E de Lautour, Judge of the 24 Pergunnahs, Alipore. Sends an abstracted return of deeds registered during the month of July 1859 (No longer enclosed). Calculates that 800 Lacs of property come under inspection of Registrars in Lower Bengal under optional Registration. The Registration should be made compulsory, and a percentage fee be paid on the value of the property instead of the present system. This would check mendacity and the production of false deeds in Court. Other comments and suggestions. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence nos. 5963, 6000
5937. Sep 1859. Letter from Captain H Dixon, Executive Engineer Cuttack Division, Cuttack. Has been brought into trouble by certain irregularities committed by him in connection with his office Treasure Chest, and by the matter leading to the exhuming of an old case between Mr Gouldsbury and himself; asks for the Private Secretary's good offices to obtain for him a full enquiry. 3 papers. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, his letters have been shown to the Governor General but correspondence with the Private Secretary on matters purely official can do little good.
