Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 6001 to 6050, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 61 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 6001 to 7000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 6013, 6015, 6022, 6034, 6036, 6038, 6039, 6040, and 6041 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

Has paid to Nujoo Furash part of his pension, and asks that the amount may be remitted to him by a draft on the Dacca Treasury. Copy of earlier letter about this. 6010. Sep 1859. Letter from Mr J F Muller, Calcutta. Further to his application to be employed in the Military Police, or as a civil officer in the North West Provinces or the Punjab. Note from General Birch. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not interfere with the patronage of the Lieutenant Governor. His Excellency cannot hold out any hope of a civil appointment.
6011. Sep 1859. Letter from Mr R Simson, Under Secretary to the Government of India Foreign Department, Calcutta. Forwards the Durbar Accounts for July and Aug 1859 (No longer enclosed). Copy of reply, returning these.
6012. Sep 1859. Letter from Captain W N Lees, Officiating Director of Public Instruction, Calcutta. Replies about Mr Cantopher's Grammar School. Copy of earlier letter asking for information. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6005
6013. Sep 1859. Letter from Baboo Radha Kishen Sett, Accountant, Government House Establishment, Calcutta. Applies for the office of Government House Treasurer on the retirement of the present officer. Copy of reply, he is appointed acting Treasurer, for 6 month probation.
6014. Sep 1859. Letter from Baboo Sreekissen Dutt, Calcutta. Accepts with pleasure the office of Treasurer in the Government House and asks to be allowed to appoint his Deputy Treasurer. Copy of reply, his application to be appointed Treasurer will be borne in mind, but the Governor General does not propose to make arrangements at present for permanently filling the situation, owing to his speedy departure from Calcutta. 6015. Sep 1859. Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Directs attention to a letter he has sent up officially from the Chief Engineer about his inability to complete permanent accommodation for all the European force now in the Province under the present limitation of expenditure; believes that two regiments might safely be withdrawn from the Province, the alternative being to house the soldiers in huts.
6016. Sep 1859. Letter from Mrs J Bell, Calcutta. Returns thanks for the donation of 100 Rupees and sends a Memorandum of her losses by the Mutiny. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence nos. 5912b, 5941.
6017. Sep 1859. Copy of a letter to E A Blundell Esquire, Bengal Club, Calcutta. Arranging an interview with the Governor General.
6018. Sep 1859. Letter from Mr R Simson, Under Secretary to Government of India Foreign Department, Calcutta. With reference to the Office Memorandum from the Private Secretary of 25 July appointing Lieutenant Robertson as Officiating Assistant General Superintendent of Thuggee at Ellichpore, forwards copy of a letter from the Acting Secretary to Government Fort St George from which it will be seen that Lieutenant Robertson's services cannot be spared, and requests therefore another nomination.
