Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 6051 to 6100, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 61 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 6001 to 6100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 6057, 6058, 6059, 6063, 6064, 6065, 6068, 6069, 6076, 6077, 6078, 6082, 6083, 6085, 6086, 6091, 6095, 6096, 6098, 6099, and 6100 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

6052. Aug - Sep 1859.Letter from Mr E Loftie, Sub Assistant Punjab Revenue Survey, Kurrachee. Asks to be appointed Deputy Collector in the North West Provinces, with printed testimonials. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Lieutenant Governor.
6053. Sep 1859. Letter from Baboo Hurro Mohun Mookerjee, Calcutta. Applies for any post which may become vacant through the changes in the Government House Treasurership. Copy of reply, arrangements have already been made.
6054. Sep 1859. Letter from Brevet Lieutenant Colonel N Gawles, Her Majesty's 73rd Regiment, Lucknow. Asks for a copy or extract of a letter from Sir G Grey to the Governor General about Gawles; sends copy of a letter about his services. Cover only Endorsed: Transferred to Military Secretary.
6055. Sep 1859. Letter from Major C Hervey, Officiating Superintendent of Thuggee and Dacoity, Jubbulpore. Asks to be considered in the event of a vacancy in the command of Colonel Beatson's Horse, or of the Governor General's Bodyguard. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
6056. Sep 1859. Letter from Mr C Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Has selected Mr Spencer as Extra Assistant and asks the Private Secretary to ask Spencer to go to Lucknow as soon as possible. Copy of reply, Mr Spencer, though a son of the late Major Spencer, is a Eurasian, and may not have been educated in England. The Governor General does not consider this any disqualification, but believes Wingfield should know the fact. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence nos. 5973, 6135
6057. Sep 1859. Letter from Mr J Remfry, Honorary Secretary, Trades Institution, Calcutta. Further to the proposed Trades Institution. Copy of reply, sending 200 Rupees. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence nos. 6038, 6075
6058. Sep 1859. Letter from Sir Richmond Shakespear, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Camp, Punnah. Reports the installation of Rungoor Sing on the Guddee of Adjyghur. Sends a sketch (not enclosed) showing the corrections which have been made to Sheet number 70 of the Bundelcund map. Mentions the doings of Furzund Ally, and measures contemplated against him and his force. The Rajah of Punnah is the ablest man in Bundelcund. Information about the hiding place of the Desput. By the last reports there are no rebels west of the Betwah; Chuttersal surrendered; and Adil Mahomed is killed. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6097.

6060. Sep 1859. Letter from Captain W F Stephens, 5th Cavalry, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General to seek another political appointment and refers to the circumstances under which he was removed from the Mysore Commission. Explains his request for 5 horses instead of 4 from the Remount Depot. Approves of the selection of Aitcheson as Deputy Secretary. Copies of two letters about the Proclamation translations. 6068. Aug - Sep 1859. Letter from Mr M F Crisp, Moulmein. Reports the departure for Calcutta, in the Barque 'Colonel Burney' of two chiefs or headmen of the Car Nicobar Islands, who wish to make some purchases in Calcutta; suggests the grant to them of 50 Rupees worth of silver and a free passage back via the Andamans. 6069. Sep 1859. Letter from Lieutenant General Sir M Cubbon, Commissioner of Mysore, Bangalore. Recommends Captain Ramsay to be Military Assistant to the Commissioner. Sends an application from Major Porter, Superintendent of Nuggur for this post. Porter should remain where he is until the public mind is more composed, refers to the constant circulation by Brahmins of mischievous reports of the shortness of British rule. 6076. Sep 1859. Letter from Mr A F Bellasis, Collector and Magistrate, Kurrachee. Asks for subscriptions towards the Hyderabad Church window Fund. Asks if the Memorial of the Civil Servants headed by Mr A Money against the reduction of salaries in Bengal is likely to find support with the Government of India. Is still at Kurrachee, which in time is likely to be a great emporium of trade. The appointment of Sir Bartle Frere to the Governor General's Council is an excellent one. Printed paper about the Church window Fund. Copy of reply, the Governor General will give 100 Rupees. His Excellency thinks Money's Memorial is good, but at the same time believes that reduction is inevitable. Sir Bartle Frere is a very good selection for the Council. It is said that Mr Andersen is to succeed him at Sindh; would this make Ellis Secretary to the Bombay Government? See also Private Secretary's Correspondence nos. 6433, 6517
6077. Sep 1859. Letter from Captain W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. Reports that the rebel Sham Sah, a Rewah Sirdar, who requested Runmust Sing to kill the Railway Engineers at Pindera, was killed on 17 September by a party of the Rewah Rajah's troops; Dhur Sing and Runmust Sing escaped.
6078. Sep 1859. Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner Cis Sutlej States, Kussowlee. Declines with thanks the offer of the Judicial Commissioner, of the Assigned Districts. Asks if the Governor General intends to visit Simla; if not, some of the chiefs should be summoned to Umballa. Will meet the Governor General's Camp at Kurnaul; the Rajah of Jheend would like to have his interview there and the other Rajahs will come to Umballa and the petty chiefs will be assembled for a grand Durbar. Copy of reply, about arrangements.

6084. Sep 1859. Letter from Dr A Christeson, Superintendent of Vaccination in the Agra Division and Assistant Lecturer in the Medical School at Agra. Has now completed his course of lectures and will join his new appointment immediately. Begs that his appointment may be published in the Gazette.
6085. Sep 1859. Letter from Roghoonauth Rao and Hurrysoor Rao, native oculists, Calcutta. Ask the Governor General to direct the Director General of the Medical Department to test their efficiency so that they may be employed. Copy of reply, request refused.
