Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 6101 to 6150, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 62 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 6101 to 6200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 6103, 6106, 6108, 6121, 6122, 6125, 6126, 6127, 6129, 6134, 6135, 6137, 6139, 6141, 6142, 6147, and 6149 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
6101. Sep 1859. Letter from Lieutenant C H M Walter, 73rd Native Infantry, Assistant Agent to the Governor General, Bhurtpore. Asks to be appointed to the Political Agency at Kotah. Copy of testimonial enclosed. Copy of reply, acknowledgement, there are many other applicants.
6103. Sep 1859. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta. Having lost a note of the Private Secretary on the subject, asks which tracts on the map are to be left uncoloured, and if he may have a list of the various languages to be written on the map, in clear writing. 6104. Sep 1859. Letter from Mr G D'Guerra, late a Section Writer in the Foreign Department, Calcutta. Asks to be restored to his post. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his letter has been forwarded to Mr Beadon for disposal. Note from Mr Beadon, he thinks he will give the man another trial.
6105. Sep 1859. Letter from Colonel C E Faber, Officiating Secretary, Ootacamund Lawrence Asylum, Ootacamund. Asks to be informed of the decision of Government, regarding the Asylum being made a public institution. Cover only. Endorsed: Transferred to Secretary to Government Foreign Department. 6107. Sep - Oct 1859. Letter from Mr W Grey, Secretary to Government Home Department, Calcutta. With reference to his Memorandum of 6 Jun about the appointment of a qualified military officer to be an Assistant Revenue Surveyor, forwards a further letter from the Government of Bengal on the subject. 6112. Sep - Oct 1859. Letter from Mr E M Potter, Lucknow. Asks for an interview with the Governor General, and to be restored to office. Two ½ anna stamps. Copy of reply, the Governor General declines to interfere.
6113. Oct 1859. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta. In reply, states that Lieutenant J Sconce should be posted to the Jhansi Survey now at Agra under Lieutenant A D Vaurenen, and that the Surveys are under the Foreign Department , but Jhansi is under North West Provinces Government. 6114. Oct 1859. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to Government of India, Foreign Department Calcutta. 6121. Sep - Oct 1859 Letter from Captain T E Bell, Her Majesty's 2nd Europeans, Assistant Commissioner, Nagpore. Implores the Governor General to stop Mr Plowden's proceedings against Captain Tuffuzzool Hossain, referred to in his Official letter of 17 Sep; justifies his own conduct with regard to this matter, and hopes the Governor General will save him from further privation and inconvenience resulting from the total stoppage of his pay. Copy of reply, the orders just issued about Nagpore will probably bring a speedy settlement of the case of Tuffuzzool Hossain; the Governor General has not yet reached a decision in the matter of Bell's pay, but he will be liberally dealt with.
6122. Sep - Oct 1859. Letter from Colonel G J Jameson, President of the Military Finance Commission, Bombay. Sends a Report of the Commission (no longer enclosed) with comments. Office Memorandum. 6125. Nov - Dec 1859. Letter from the Honourable G C Talbot, Precis Writer, East India House, London. In reply, has sent to Messrs Drummond the enclosure of the Private Secretary's letter of 2 Oct. Copy of Private Secretary's letter to Talbot; copy of letter from Governor General's Military Secretary and Aide de Camp sending to Messrs Drummond bills for 250,000 Rupees, to be exchanged and credited to the Governor General's account. Reports on the state of the roads between Raneegunge and Benares, and asks about the Governor General's arrangements, on behalf of Mr Pollock, Magistrate of Benares. 6127. Sep - Oct 1859. Letter from Lieutenant C K M Walter, Assistant Agent to the Governor General in temporary charge of the Bhurtpore Agency, Bhurtpore. Encloses a Khureeta from Maharajah Jusiount (?) Sing of Bhurtpore inviting the Private Secretary to the wedding of His Highness with the daughter of the Maharajah of Puttiala [Patiala] (Khureeta no longer enclosed). Copy of reply to Walter, grateful thanks, Private Secretary will have much pleasure in accepting should the Governor General's plans permit.

6135. Sep - Oct 1859. Letter from Mr C Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Returns thanks for the information about Mr Spencer; he would prefer Mr Hume. Proposes getting up a display of fireworks for the Governor General's visit to Lucknow. Rajah Jin Loll Sing of Otrowlee has been sentenced to death for the murder of Miss Jackson, Mrs Green etc. and will be executed at the scene of the massacre. Will present himself at the first halting ground on the Lucknow side of the river, and asks if the Governor General wishes him to come over to Cawnpore. Copy of reply, Private Secretary is making inquiries about Mr Hume. The Governor General does not object to a firework display, but has heard rumours of a proposed sham fight, which he supposes to be untrue, as he does not desire any military display beyond a review of the troops. Proposed movements of the Governor General. He wishes to announce at Lucknow his assent to the principle of Talookdaree Settlements. 6136. Oct 1859. Letter from Mr T Oldham, Geological Surveyor in India, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General.
6137. Oct 1859. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to Government of India Foreign Department, Calcutta. Asks about the Governor General 's arrangements; he has told Mr Couper that His Excellency will not hold a Durbar at Benares, but the Rajah may present himself at Cawnpore. 6140. Sep - Oct 1859. Letter from Major C Hervey, Officiating Superintendent General of the Thuggee and Dacoity Department, Jubbulpore. Suggests Captain Ross, 3rd Bengal Europeans, as Assistant General Superintendent of Agra. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot consent to transferring an officer from a European regiment and he believes that there are more than the prescribed number of captains absent from the Corps on staff employ.

6142. Sep - Oct 1859. Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Submits a return showing the number of men to be discharged, and wishing to be discharged in the Oudh Military Police; believes that the gratuities were the inducement, and that the men leave in high spirits and well pleased with their treatment by the Government.

6149. Sep - Oct 1859. Letter from Dr A Campbell, Superintendent of Darjeeling. Writes that should a civil officer be required in the ensuing cold weather on the Nepal Frontier with the Commander in Chief or any other commander, begs that his name be submitted to the Governor General for the duty. Copy of reply, there is no prospect of a civil officer being required except for the purpose of marking out the new boundary line, arrangements for which have already been made.
