Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 6251 to 6300, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 63 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 6201 to 6300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 6254, 6257, 6259, 6267, 6270, 6271, 6275, 6279, 6282, 6283, 6285, 6286, 6288, 6291, 9296, 6297, and 6298 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
6251. Oct 1859. Letter from Captain W D Dickson, 3rd Bombay Native Infantry, Officiating Assistant General Superintendent, Thuggee and Dacoity Department Belgaum. Asks for the permanent post as Assistant General Superintendent at Agra; or to be allowed to remain in his present appointment until the return of Major Hervey, with the prospect of succeeding permanently. 6254. Oct 1859. Letter from Captain T H Chamberlain, Division Commandant, Oudh Police, Lucknow. Asks for an interview with the Governor General. Copy of reply, Lord Canning is very shortly leaving Lucknow, will Chamberlain please state his business in writing.
6255. Oct - Nov 1859. Letter from Captain W D Dickson, 3rd Bombay Native Infantry, Belgaum. Further to his application for permanent employment, begs to remind the Governor General of the letter of introduction from Lady Fife. Would prefer an appointment in the Thuggee Department should his name not have been sent in for the Mysore appointment, unless the Educational Office be of much superior salary. 6256. Oct 1859. Petition of Toofaney, late a Lascar of the Government House Establishment, Calcutta. Has lost his descriptive roll in a shipwreck, and therefore has not received his pension for the last 13 months, and asks for another roll. Memorandum about this. 6257. Oct 1859. Letter from Mr W Blowers, Deputy Post Master General, Bombay. Asks for a list of the names of the public officers with the Governor General's Camp; and for the names of the officers whose overland letters are to be despatched by Express from the Bombay Post Office on the arrival of each overland mail. Two notes by Private Secretary. Copy of reply sending the lists required.
6258. Oct 1859. Letter from Mr St George Tucker, Lucknow. Reminds the Private Secretary that Tucker's brother, H Tucker, has not yet been told whether his services will be accepted by the Governor General and until he knows this he is unable to return to India. 6259. Oct 1859. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Foreign Department, with the Governor General, Lucknow. In reply, the Private Secretary will receive credit on the Toshakhanah accounts for the value of the four shawls. Copy of earlier letter about this. 6260. Oct 1859. Letter from Baboo Trilochun Roy, Calcutta. In continuation of his last letter makes some remarks in favour of the British Government, as contrasted with the effete Government of the natives. Could give valuable information to any high officer of Government he was allowed to meet. Sends a letter to be made over to Baboo Boloy Chaund Mullick, about whom he can give information. 6266. Oct 1859. Letter from Mr H C Sutherland, Assistant Collector in Charge, Tipperah. In continuation of an earlier letter, forwards a copy of Bhoolun Gulleah's Descriptive Roll together with his receipt for 36 Rupees paid to him for 1858, and asks for the money for 1859 to be forwarded to him. 6267. Oct 1859. Letter from Colonel R Baird Smith, Officiating Secretary to the Government of India, Public Works Department, Calcutta. Reports that on looking over the papers in Captain Dansey's case, he finds nothing of importance to add to what he wrote about him in his last letter; except that as Dansey did not do his work well at Gwalior, Colonel Yule saw no reason to object to comply with the demand of the Madras Government, that he should be allowed to do duty with his regiment. Complains of being tied down after a service of 10 years to the position usually attained after 3 or 4 years’ service, has sent a second petition to the Governor General. 6279. Oct - Nov 1859. Letter from Dr G Paton, Post Master General, North West Provinces, Camp, Cawnpore. Sends a letter from the Post Master of Benares stating that a case of camera materials for Lord Canning's photographers was received broken; he believes it must have been dropped in the Bengal Division, while being removed from the waggons at the un-bridged rivers.

Returns thanks for copies of the correspondence regarding the 'Sunnuds' to be given to Oudh Talookdars, with comments. Makes some remarks on the objectionable policy hitherto pursued towards the natives of India; and as an illustration of the cumbrous system prevailing in the North West Provinces, advises the Private Secretary at his leisure to translate a small settlement trial for the Governor General's perusal. 6290. Nov 1859. Letter from Mr C B Gordon, Electric Telegraph Office, Cawnpore. Asks if the Governor General has received a cipher message from Lord Elphinstone of 55 groups, sent on 30 Oct by ordinary dak.
6291. Nov 1859. Copy of a letter to Colonel H Bates, Bombay. Copy of a letter sending him copies of notifications for Lord Elphinstone. The visit to Lucknow was very successful. Wingfield is very able, even more so than Montgomery.
