Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 6451 to 6500, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 65 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 6401 to 6500’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 6451, 6453, 6454, 6455, 6461, 6464, 6465, 6471, 6476, 6479, 6480, 6481, 6486, 6487, 6492, 6493, 6494, 6496, 6497, 6498, and 6499 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

6453. Nov 1859 - Jan 1860. Letter from Mr C Richardes, Joint Magistrate 1st class, Futtehgurh. Asks for his name to be added to the Governor General's Minute on the services of Civil Officers during the Mutiny. Copy of reply, his services have been brought to the notice of the Secretary of State. The Delhi Division in the North West Provinces narrative was omitted, owing to its transfer to the Punjab. 6454. Nov - Dec 1859. Letter from Mr F Lushington, Accountant, North West Provinces, Agra. In reply, will not be able to furnish a statement of the deposits in the Treasuries of the North West Provinces under the head of private donations and subscriptions plundered during the Mutiny until he reaches Allahabad, as the whole of his office records are now on their way to that station. 6457. Nov 1859. Copy of a letter to Mr W Grey, Secretary to Government of India Home Department, Calcutta. Asking whether or not Dr Boycott is to go on leave. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence nos. 6458, 6512
6458. Nov - Dec 1859. Letter from Mr C H Lushington, Secretary to the Government of India, Financial Department, Calcutta. Forwards copies of correspondence; Dr Boycott, the Assay Master of the Calcutta Mint has accepted the terms offered to him, and the President in Council has allowed him to proceed to England on the understanding that he resigns his appointment and gives up all pay during his absence. Submits the claims to promotion of Dr Dowries, Dr Shekleton, Dr Collum, and Dr Kane. Note from Mr Beadon about Dr Kane. Copy of letter asking for information about Dr Kane. 6462. Nov - Dec 1859. Letter from Mr W Anderson, Officiating Principal Agra College, Agra. Asks if the Governor General will visit the College, or inquire into its ruinous condition. 6489. Nov - Dec 1859. Letter from Captain W D Dickson, Officiating Assistant General Superintendent of Thuggee, Belgaum. Sends a letter about his examination in Canarese, and under the circumstances stated begs to be continued in his present appointment at Belgaum. Is disappointed that his name is not in the Minute acknowledging the services of Civil Officers during the Mutiny, sends 4 letters testifying to his services (not enclosed). Copy of reply, the Governor General regrets that the reports from the Punjab Government, do not furnish him with sufficient grounds for inserting Hay's name in a Supplementary Minute. 6497. Dec 1859. Letter from Captain F A Chapman, 2nd in Command, District Police Battalion, North West Provinces, Agra.
