Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 6501 to 6550, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 66 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 6501 to 6600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 6504, 6507, 6509, 6518, 6520, 6522, 6523, 6524, 6525, 6530, 6531, 6535, 6543, 6544, 6545, and 6548 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
6501. Dec 1859. Letter from Captain G F F Vincent, late 30th Native Infantry Officiating Interpreter, Her Majesty's 99th, Agra. Asks for employment, sends printed copies of testimonials. 6502. Dec 1859. Letter from Captain J Pritchard, Editor of the Delhi Gazette. Returns thanks for the telegrams sent to him, and asks that he may be furnished occasionally with suitable information of public interest.
6503. Dec 1859. Letter from the Right Reverend J Persico, Bishop of Agra. Sends a petition (no longer enclosed) from Mrs Wood asking that her compensation money be paid in full for her losses during the Mutiny. Copy of reply, the petition has been sent to Mr Beadon. Private Secretary fears that there is little chance of an exception being made in her favour.
6504. Dec 1859. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Government Foreign Department with the Governor General. Replies about the grant of confiscated lands to Messrs Venable, Martin, Legye and Dunne.
6505. Dec 1859. Letter from Major H Stuart Wortley, Agra. In reply, will call on the Private Secretary to ask for an interview with the Governor General.

6523. Dec 1859. Letter from Colonel B Smith, Officiating Secretary to Government Public Works Department, Calcutta. Sends a letter from Mr Turnbull and a Telegraph message to say that the arches of the More Bridge have been completed, and that it is likely that the line to Pakam (Pakore?) will be finished by the end of March. 6524. Dec 1859. Letter from Mr F Lincoln, Superintendent, Judicial Commissioner 's Office, Oudh, Lucknow. Returns thanks for the offer of an appointment, and sends a letter to the Governor General asking to be appointed to a higher grade than that which he was offered. Copy of reply, the Governor General wishes him to understand that the position he wishes to hold is entirely different from his present one; His Excellency cannot agree to nominate to superior positions men who are untried in that particular branch, however conspicuous their services. 6525. Dec 1859. Letter from Mr C B Thornhill, Commissioner of Allahabad. Sends a note on the war services of Mr J W Power; and mentions the services of Mr Sherer, whose name is omitted in the Governor General's Minute. Sends also copy of the inscription which he has had cut on grey Chunar stone, to be sent to Cawnpore, which marks a spot within Wheeler's Entrenchments, where lie those who were the first to meet their death when beleaguered in Jun 1857. 6526. Dec 1859. Letter from Mr J H Prinsep, Officiating Magistrate and Collector of Allygurh, Camp, Allygurh. Asks when the Governor General will enter the District. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6465
6527. Dec 1859. Letter from the Governor of the Straits Settlements. Forwards a report on the Civil Service in the Straits Settlements, in demi-official manner, with lists of officers. He remarks on the dearth of Civil Servants for vacancies; want of inducement for them to remain; impolicy of employing un-covenanted servants in the higher posts who cannot control the young Military officers. Suggests that civilians should be appointed in England specifically for the Straits Service. Believes no Resident is necessary at Singapore, as the Governor lives there.
6528. Dec 1859. Letter from Mr J Campbell MD, CB, Calcutta. Asks for employment. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
6529. Dec 1859. Letter from Mr H D Chick, Editor of the Oude Gazette. Sends a Memorial to the Governor General (no longer enclosed) asking for recognition of his services during the Siege of Lucknow. Copy of reply, his papers have been transferred to the Foreign Department.
6530. Dec 1859. Letter from Mr C B Thornhill, Commissioner of Allahabad. Sends a letter from Mr F B Outram, asking to have his name added to the Governor General's Minute acknowledging the services of Civil Servants during the Mutiny; also brings to notice the services of the Allygurh Volunteers, with an extract from Mr Colvin's despatch; mentions the good services of Dr Clark. North West Provinces Government has omitted to record the good services of many. Copy of reply, His Excellency will probably include Outram's name, with others, in a supplementary note. 6531. Dec 1859 - Jan 1860. Letter from Captain T H Bullock, Deputy Commissioner of the Hyderabad Assigned Districts, Jaulnah. Has sent a letter to Secretary to Government, stating his claim to be Commissioner of the Assigned Districts, and a copy to the Resident. 6532. Dec 1859. Letter from Major E H Elliot, Commissioner, Nagpore. In reply, has sent a copy of his letter of 8 Nov to the Governor General. Copy of earlier letter, Elliot's letter was badly injured by a fire which broke out on the night of 11 Dec in the Governor General's tents; would he please send a copy.
6533. Dec 1859. Letter from Mr W Connor, Head Clerk in the Collector's Office, Allyghur. Sends a letter to the Governor General asking for a position for his son in the Indian Army. Copy of reply, commissions are given by the Secretary of State, or by the Home Council.
