Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 6551 to 6600, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 66 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 6501 to 6600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 6551, 6552, 6553, 6555, 6556, 6558, 6559, 6561, 6562, 6564, 6566, 6570, 6575, 6577, 6579, 6589, and 6597 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Note that number 6596 was transferred to Miscellaneous Bundle number 410a.
6551. Nov - Dec 1859. Letter from Brigadier General G Le Grand Jacob, late Political Commissioner of the Southern Mahratta Country, London. Sends a copy of his letter to the Secretary of State on the subject of the omission of his name in the Governor General's Minute on the services of the Civil officers during the Mutiny, and asks to have the omission rectified. Copy of reply, the Minute comprised only the names of those officers who distinguished themselves in Bengal, or of those who held Political appointments immediately under the Government of India. Services under the Bombay Government were recorded separately. The Governor General is fully aware of the very remarkable services rendered by Jacob in the difficult charge he held during the rebellion. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence nos. 6630, 6693
6552. Dec 1858. Letter from Captain W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. Promises to send translations of the Rewah Rajah's reply and explanations; and another letter written by the Rajah to the Nagode Chief, saying that Dhar Sing is his chief adviser. Comments on Captain Cole's increase of pay. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6553.
6553. Dec 1858. Letter from Captain W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. Will leave for Myhere on 9 Dec and be at Nagode on 10 Dec. Brigadier Carpenter was ordered on 9 Nov to march back to Nagode, had not arrived by 6 Dec. Hopes to be able to get General Whitlock to do something; but he needs a great deal of managing. Robindur Luchmun Sing (?) who was a great intriguer and a bad influence on the Rajah, is very ill and expected to die. Sends translation of the Rewah Rajah's letter to the Rajah of Nagode promised in his last letter; has another letter of the Rajah to his Commander in Chief telling him not to fight the Dinapore mutineers. Asks whether the Rewah Rajah ought not to get the Jagheer promised him. The Buidhona rebels are dispersing. If General Whitlock would send Horse Artillery and Cavalry to the Bhandair Tableland, and order a detachment to Hutra, they would be well surrounded. 6554. Dec 1859. Letter from Captain R D Dansey, 3rd Madras Europeans, Allahabad. Asks for the return of a letter from Sir R Napier. Copy of reply, returning this. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 5553
6555. Nov - Dec 1859. Letter from Mr St G Tucker, Commissioner, Oudh. States that he dissuaded Roostum Sahi from applying to the Governor General for a letter of appreciation for his services during the Mutiny, asks if he could be granted a certificate in the name of the Government. Copy of reply, His Excellency has done everything in his power to mark his approval of the Rajah's good services; but could not give him any special acknowledgement, without granting a similar one to other native chiefs who distinguished themselves.
6556. Dec 1859. Letter from Mr J V Agnew, Joint Magistrate and Deputy Collector, Saharunpore, Camp. Having heard that the Governor General intends coming to Roorkee and Hurdwar, suggests routes and arrangements. Copy of reply about these.
6557. Dec 1859. Copy of a letter to Dr M Kane MD, Kamptee. Informing him that he has been appointed to be Deputy Assay Master of the Bombay Mint. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence nos. 6437, 6458, 6549
6558. Dec 1859. Letter from Lieutenant General the Honourable Sir J Outram, Calcutta. Sends a recommendation from Sir Mark Cubbon, in favour of Lieutenant Colonel Macqueen, Judge Advocate General of the Madras Army, to officiate for Mr Devereux as Judicial Commissioner of Mysore, with an application from Macqueen. Note from Mr Beadon. Copy of reply, the appointment will be gazetted. Comments on the visit to Roorkee.
6559. Dec 1859. Letter from the Honourable Sir P Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Delhi. Hopes to be at the Governor General's Camp on Monday, after seeing His Excellency will return to Delhi and leave for Lahore on Tuesday.
6560. Dec 1859 - Jan 1860. Letter from Captain E Tyrwhitt, Commandant of Divisional Police, Camp, Kurkhoda.Has been recommended by the Governor General for a Brevet Majority for his services; does not find his name in the list of services worthy of mention. Note from General Birch. Copy of reply, His Excellency regrets that the rules of the service did not admit of his receiving the Brevet Majority for which he was recommended; and His Excellency having already sent up Tyrwhitt's name through the Military Department is unable to repeat his recommendation through another channel.

6562. Dec 1859. Letter from Lieutenant General the Honourable Sir J Outram, President in Council, Calcutta. Sends a letter from the Reverend G P Badger, Chaplain at Aden, dated 27 Nov, which reports that the French will soon be in possession of Adoolis, about 40 miles south of Massowah, ceded by Dejai Nagoosi, the Prince of Tigre; and that a French Man-of-War is shortly expected to take possession, and that a new Consul has reached Massowah, accredited to Dejai Nagoosi, by which France recognises his independence of the Abyssinian Emperor to whom the British Consul Mr Plowden is accredited. France will have it in her power to do a great deal of mischief with such an ally. Copy. Copy of reply, returning the original letter, and describing part of the Governor General's tour. 6566. Dec 1859 - Jan 1860. Letter from Mr F Lincoln, Superintendent, Judicial Commissioner 's Office, Lucknow. 6567. Dec 1859. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Camp, Sehore. Recommends Captain Cumming's application for leave of absence to Europe on private affairs for 6 months, and submits the name of Captain Hayward to officiate for him provided he pass the exam in languages. Copy of reply, approving these arrangements.
6568. Dec 1859. Letter from Mrs C Breton, Meerut. Sends an appeal for compensation. Copy of reply, the Governor General refers applicants for compensation to the Compensation Commissioner. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6642
6569. Dec 1859. Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Camp, Oonai. Asks if the Governor General would agree to the transfer of Mr Hewitt, a young Civilian now in College, from Bengal to Oudh; should he apply officially? Note from Mr Beadon. Copy of reply, the Governor General says it is impossible to attach Mr Hewitt to Oudh, unless he can effect an exchange.
6570. Dec 1859. Letter from Lord W Hay, Deputy Commissioner of Simla. Asks if the Governor General intends to receive the Hill Chiefs at Umballa or at Simla, they would prefer Simla. 1/2 anna stamp. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6714

6575. Dec 1859 - Jan 1860. Letter from Mr H Balfour, Officiating Magistrate, Mozufferpore, Tirhoot. Suggests that the name of Mr H B Drummond, Magistrate of Purneah, was entered in the Governor General's Minute on the services of Civil Officers during the Mutiny by mistake, as Balfour was Officiating Magistrate of Purneah from Feb 1857 to Jul 1859. 6576. Dec 1859. Letter from Captain W D Dickson, Officiating Assistant General Superintendent, Thuggee and Dacoitee, Belgaum. Asks to be allowed to continue at Belgaum until relieved, and for a few days longer to enable him to meet his family at Bombay, and travel with them to Agra. Copy of reply, he is urgently needed at Agra, and must take up his appointment as soon as possible.
