‘No. 67 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 6602 to 6650

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 6602 to 6650, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 67 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 6601 to 6700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 6606, 6615, 6616, 6617, 6622, 6625, 6626, 6627, 6630, 6631, 6632, 6634, 6639, 6647, and 6648 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
6602. Dec 1859. Letter from Mr G Robertson, 3rd class Sub Engineer, Officiating Executive Engineer, 7th Division, Grand Trunk Road, Umballa. Looks forward to seeing the Private Secretary at Umballa. States that the 7th Division extends as far as Delhi, and that Captain Hutchinson, Superintending Engineer of the Circle, left on 26 Dec to see Colonel Yule at Delhi.
6603. Dec 1859. Letter from Mr J C Ryley, Head Clerk, Deputy Commissioner's Office, Delhi. Sends a petition further to his request to be appointed to the Oudh Military Police as a reward for his services in defending the Magazine of Delhi. Cover only. Endorsed: Transferred to Military Secretary
6604. Dec 1859. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Camp, Biorah. Writes about appointments in the Commission, Captain Hutchinson is to go to England on sick leave. Copy of reply about these. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 6678
6605. Dec 1859. Letter from Mr J Taylor, Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, Umballa. Offers his services to assist Mr Wilson, the Financial Member of Council, and suggests methods whereby he could save money for the Government (Letter no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, Taylor's letter has been sent to Mr Wilson.
6606. Dec 1859. Letter from Colonel G Ramsay, Resident at Nepal. Returns with thanks Mr Wingfield's letter (not enclosed), and agrees with him in considering the report of Jung Bahadoor's going down to aid the rebels, and of the ex-Ranee of Lahore raising the Sikhs as without foundation; says the former will never break with the British, and the latter is now spiritless, indolent, and has no money. Asks if the Governor General has any objection to his being furnished with copies of the instructions that have been issued to the officers attached to Colonel Holditch's Camp. He regrets very much the presence of Captain Hill in Jung Bahadoor's Camp, as it may lead to a re-opening of the question of compensation, and payment of the expenses of the Gurkha expedition. Mentions the course adopted by him in his discussions with the Durbar regarding the driving out of the rebels from the Terai by Jung Bahadoor. Sends a translation of a letter from Jung Bahadoor to Brigadier Holditch. Copies
6607. Dec 1859 - Jan 1860. Letter from Mr J D Lyne, late Commission Agent and Auctioneer, Delhi. Asks when he will receive compensation for his heavy losses by the Mutiny amounting to 25,070 Rupees. 6608. Dec 1859. Letter from Ram Chundra, Head Master, Government School, Delhi. Asks the Governor General to visit the School or to be allowed to pay his respects personally. 6610. Dec 1859 - Jan 1860. Letter from Mr L Ricketts, Assistant Commissioner, Hyderabad Assigned Districts Camp, Hospett. States the circumstances which entitled him to promotion to the grade of 1st class Assistant Commissioner and asks to be allowed to act for Captain M Tayler as Deputy Commissioner. 6611. Dec 1859 - Jan 1860. Petition of Mahomed Haniff, late Manjee, Number 4 Boat of the Military Secretary's Office, Calcutta. Complains that he has been given an insufficient pension; asks to be reinstated, as he has sufficient strength to work for 10 more years or to be allowed the full pension to which he is entitled. Copy of reply, he must prove that he is entitled to the full pension, as according to the Government books he has only served for 26 years. 6630. Nov 1859 - Jan 1860. Letter from Major General Le Grand Jacob, late Political Commissioner Southern Mahratta Country. Sends copies of letters sent by the last mail on the subject of the omission of his name in the Governor General's Minute of 2 July acknowledging the services of civil officers and others during the late rebellion; but for the instantaneous crushing of insurrection wherever it arose in the Districts under him it would have been impossible for the Bombay troops to have operated in Central India. 6631. Jan 1860. Letter from Mr Hardy Wells, Civil Engineer on special duty. Moradabad. Offers his services for the command of a Civil Army Works Corps under the Commander in Chief of the China Army. Two papers. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement of his offer. Most of the material for an Army Works Corps has already been supplied and a nucleus has already been formed at Canton.
6632. Jan 1860. Letter from Mr F Lincoln, Superintendent Judicial Commissioner's Office, Lucknow. Accepts the offer of a 3rd class Extra Assistant Commissionership but hopes in consideration of his services during the siege of Lucknow he will soon be promoted. Note from Mr Wingfield. Applies for the office of Acting Assistant Superintendent for the Suppression of Thuggee at Belgaum, in place of Captain Dickson, he has passed in Hindustani and Mahratta languages. Copy of reply, the vacancy has been filled.
6644. Jan 1860. Letter from Assistant Surgeon J J Clarke, Benares Horse, Camp, Bettiah en route to Gazeepoor. Asks to be appointed Assistant Surgeon of the Nepal Residency, states his services. Copy of reply, he will be considered in the event of a vacancy.

6647. Jan 1860. Letter from Sir J Outram, President in Council, Calcutta. Sends a letter from Colonel R Wallace, Resident at Baroda, about the Secretary of State's Despatch referring to the re-transfer of the Baroda Residency to Bombay. Believes this measure has been suggested because of the position of the Gaekwar's possessions in Kattywar which is at present unsatisfactory but could be improved. The Okamundul affair is nearly over; the military arrangements were bad. Govind Rao Rosin sends his respects.
6648. Jan 1860. Letter from Mr R H Davies, Secretary to the Government of the Punjab, Lahore. Not knowing who the Quarter Master General with the Governor General's Camp is, asks for a statement showing the space of ground occupied by the Governor General's and Commander in Chief's Camps. Endorsed: Note to Roberts and his reply. Copy of reply to Davies, Captain Roberts, the Quarter Master of the Camp, has written to the Commissioner of Lahore and the extent of ground required for the Camps.
