Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 6701 to 6749, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 67 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 6701 to 6800’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 6702, 6705, 6714, 6717, 6721, 6723, 6724, 6727, 6729, 6730, 6737, 6740, 6743, 6744, 6747, and 6748 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Note that number 6728 was transferred to the Treasurer.
6701. Jan 1860. Letter from Major H D Abbott Commanding 4th Regiment Hyderabad Cavalry, Aurungabad. Applies to be Assistant Resident at Hyderabad; or for the command of the Contingent or the Military Secretaryship. Two letters. Copy of reply, the post of Assistant Resident is in the Civil Department; the opinion of the Resident would be taken before any nomination. 6702. Jan 1860. Letter from Brigadier General Sir J Inglis, Commanding at Cawnpore. Sends a letter addressed to the Governor General together with replies from England communicating the objections of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel to transferring the funds raised at home for a Memorial Church at Cawnpore in the manner proposed at a meeting held at Cawnpore. 6703. Jan 1860. Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner of the Cis Sutlej States. Sends a petition from Sirdar Mith Sing of Mullodh, and believes that the purpose of it is the same as that of the 'Thirty four' families of the Umballa District. Cover only. 6704. Jan 1860. Letter from Mr St George Tucker, Commissioner, Oudh, Sultanpore. Further to his application for 6 months leave. Copy of reply, His Excellency never suspected that Tucker or any of his name would shirk his work, and considers that he is well entitled to his holiday.
6705. Jan - Feb 1860. Letter from Mr G Couper, Secretary to Government North West Provinces, Seharunpoor. Has sent to Allahabad for papers connected with a pension for the family of Dr Buck. 6707. Jan 1860. Copy of a letter to Mr R H Davies, Secretary to Punjab Government, Lahore. Sending him the reply of the Electric Telegraph Assistant to Davies' note about the detention of messages.
6711. Jan 1860. Letter from Lieutenant W Phaire, 54th Native Infantry, late Officiating Junior Assistant Commissioner, Ranchee, Chota Nagpore. Asks to be appointed Superintendent of the Hill Tribes in Chittagong. Copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, the appointment would be in the gift of the Lieutenant General, who, as far as the Private Secretary is aware, has not applied for the services of a military officer for the post. The certificates are very creditable.
6712. Jan 1860. Letter from Captain W D Dickson, 3rd Bombay Europeans, Pootguttee en route to Bombay. Further to his request for permission to remain at Belgaum, sends a copy of a notification of his having passed in Canarese.
6713. Jan 1860. Letter from Major CHervey, Officiating General Superintendent for the Suppression of Thuggee, Kamptee. Proposes Lieutenant E Y Walcott, 57th Bengal Native Infantry, as Officiating General Assistant Superintendant at Agra, in place of Captain Dickson, placed at the disposal of the Bombay Government for service in China. 6714. Jan 1860. Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner Cis Sutlej States, Camp. Sends a letter from Lord William Hay (no longer enclosed) about the omission of Hay's name from the Governor General's Minute on the services of civil officers and others during the Mutiny. Copy of reply, Private Secretary does not think the Governor General will take any further steps about Hay unless the Punjab Government sent up a special recommendation officially. 6719. Jan 1860. Letter from Lieutenant T K Bacon, late 22nd Native Infantry, Calcutta. Asks to be appointed Cantonment Joint Magistrate of Meerut. Returns thanks for the insertion of his name in the Governor General's Supplementary Minute on the services of Civil Officers during the Mutinies and is disappointed at his services not having been acknowledged in the manner deserved. 6723. Jan 1860. Letter from Mr L Ricketts, Assistant Commisioner, Hyderabad Assigned Districts, Raichore. Submits his views in favour of a House Tax. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement.
6724. Jul 1859 - Jan 1860. Letter from Mr W Muir, Member of the Board of Revenue, Agra, on leave, Mussoorie. Gives his views on the Toll question, is in favour of continuing the tolls on the Grand Trunk Road. Reports the result of the revision settlement in progress in some of the Districts in the North West Provinces, believes the Military Police should at once be reduced. To the Honourable H B Harington.
6725. Jan 1860. Letter from Mr T Garrett, Deputy Post Master General, Calcutta. Reports that owing to the late receipt of the Pilot's report, he is unable to arrange for an after packet in time to notify the Private Secretary by telegram.
6726. Jan - Feb 1860. Petition of Sarah De Courcy, Hoshiarpoor. Asks for money owing to the removal of the cantonment from Hooshiarpore, her houses there no longer yield her any support. Copy of reply, request refused.
6727. Jan 1860. Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Umritsur. In reply about the numbers of camels and carts for the Governor General's journey between Lahore and Peshawur. Memorandum about this. Office note. Also 7 printed copies of the Memorandum.
6729. Jan - Feb 1860. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India Camp, Jowra. Reports that some of the Rao Sahib's agents have been tampering with some of Holkar's soldiers at Indore and spreading reports of forces coming from Oojein but as Major McMullin has obtained reinforcements from Mhow, there is no need for anxiety. Holkar is not showing a good spirit in consequence of the rewards to the Nawab of Jowra but this feeling will subside on receipt of the Governor General's Khureeta.
6730. Jan - Feb 1860. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Bruce, Deputy Adjutant General China Expeditionary Force, Calcutta. Asks to be informed by telegraph of the result of his application to retain his appointment in Oudh during his absence in China. Copy of reply, no definite orders have been given yet. Private Secretary believes the Governor General's view is unfavourable.
6731. Jan - Feb 1860. Letter from Captain E Thomas, Her Majesty's 3rd Bengal European Regiment, Futtehgurh. No longer wishes the Cantonment Joint Magistracy at Gwalior, would be grateful for any civil or political appointment. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 6316, 7324, 7548
6733. Feb 1860. Letter from Mr W.T Westfield, Government House, Calcutta. In reply, states that the box per 'Governor Higginson' contains arms as per the enclosed list. 6735. Jan - Feb 1860. Letter from Mr C Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh Camp, Fyzabad. Suggests that Mr McDonell of Shahabad be transferred from Bengal to Oudh in place of Captain Reid. Copy of reply, the Governor General has no objection. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 6785
6736. Jan - Feb 1860. Letter from Mr B P Singer, late Extra Assistant Nagpore, Calcutta. Asks for employment. Copy of reply, request refused.
6737. Feb 1860. Letter from Mr E L Brandreth, Commissioner of Delhi, Kurnaul. Sends with remarks a list of the comparative strength of the troops at Delhi before and after the Mutiny and believes that the number of natives both at the out-stations and at Delhi might be gradually reduced to a very considerable extent. Will shortly submit a proposition to Sir R Montgomery on the subject.
6738. Jan - Feb 1860. Messrs Pharoah and Company, Proprietors of the Madras Atheneum acknowledging receipt of a remittance for the Governor General's and Private Secretary's subscription. 6740. Feb 1860. Letter from Major J Skinner, Bengal Retired List, Jhansi. Having heard that his brother Mr A Skinner has sent exaggerated and unfounded accounts of the writer's interview with the Governor General to an officer in the Governor General's Camp, most emphatically contradicts the same. Copy of reply, acknowledgement
6741. Jan - Feb 1860. Letter from Colonel C Hinde, Commanding Nagod Police, Myhere. Suggests that instead of reducing his force, it be turned into a Regular or Irregular Corps. Should this be impossible asks for a command in an Irregular Corps in China or elsewhere. Refers to his services for which he had hoped to get a superior Brevet rank. The Commander in Chief refuses to do anything for him as he was acting under the civil power, although His Lordship recommended him for promotion in 1858. Copy of reply, Private Secretary understands that official orders have been issued about Hinde's services. There is no chance that his force will be turned into a regiment.
6742. Jan - Feb 1860. Letter from Mr Thomas Menzies, Calcutta. Sends a Memorial to the Governor General (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, his Memorial has been sent to Mr Beadon.
6743. Jan - Feb 1860. Letter from Mr W Grey, Secretary to Government of India Home Department, Calcutta. Has not yet been able to find any papers relating specially to the Jagheer holdings of the principal Punjab Chiefs. Sends extract from the detailed letter of instructions issued to the Board of Administration which treats of Rent-free lands and pensions generally. Has forwarded an old Army List of 1857 and some Parliamentary papers about adoption and succession. Copy of reply, acknowledgement, the Governor General now has sufficient information.
6744. Jan - Feb 1860. Letter from Lieutenant General Sir J Outram, President in Council, Calcutta. Forwards a letter from Captain Alexander Orr expressing the disappointment of himself and his brother at receiving Zemindarees assessed at a Jumma of 10,000 Rupees only and asking for an increase to the estate of 5,000 Rupees annually. 6745. Jan - Feb 1860. Letter from Colonel G J Jamieson, President of the Military Finance Commission, Madras. Sends a Report on the cumbrous nature of the system of Account and Audit in India and the suggested revisions (no longer enclosed). The Commission have had some difficulty in investigating the Madras expenses from the very imperfect system of account. Expects to have the Report on Madras, which is finished, printed on arrival at Calcutta about 25 January. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement.
