Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 6901 to 6950, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 70 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 6901 to 7000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 6905, 6906, 6907, 6909, 6910, 6911, 6912, 6913, 6916, 6921, 6924, 6931, 6932, 6933, 6934, and 6943 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
6901. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr E H Brookes, Assistant in Charge, Electric Telegraph Office, Umritsur. Asks for payment for service messages sent out by the Governor General from Noorpoor.
6902. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr E C Bayley, Futtehgurh. Returns thanks for his appointment as Officiating Judicial Commissioner at Lucknow.
6903. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr C Grant, Assistant Magistrate and Collector, Agra. States that since learning of his appointment as 2nd Assistant to the Resident at Hyderabad he has been offered an appointment in the Settlement at Saharunpore, and asks that his appointment to Hyderabad may be cancelled. 6904. Apr 1860. Letter from Lieutenant A G Remington, late 12th Native Infantry Commandant Banda Military Police Battalion, Banda. Asks for a further extension to enable him to pass in Hindustani. 6905. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner, Cis Sutlej States, Camp. Returns Mr Campbell's note about the Cis Sutlej chiefs, and sends a Memorandum on the subject. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement. The Governor General thinks that Barnes' objections to Campbell's proposals are quite conclusive. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6895
6906. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr T D Forsyth, Vice President and Secretary, Punjab Agri Horticultural Society. Sends a copy of an appeal and the byelaws of the Society, and hopes that His Excellency will become a patron of the Society. Copy of reply, the Governor General will become a patron with great pleasure and sends 100 Rupees donation. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6978
6907. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner, Cis Sutlej States, Camp, Khurrur. States that Pinjore (?) being one of the country seats of the Maharajah of Patiala, his agents say it is customary to offer the Governor General a Peshkush of bows and guns and asks if this procedure will be allowed.
6908. Apr 1860. Letter from Captain H D Manning, Commandant, District Police, Azimgurh. Asks to be appointed Pension Pay Master at Lucknow, or for the command of any Irregular troops. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Military Secretary. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6984
6909. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr W Grey, Secretary to the Government of India Home Department, Calcutta. Sends copy of a message from the President in Council to the Governor General despatched in cipher on 3 Apr about the objectionable proceedings of the Madras Government, which has objected violently against the Government of India's whole financial scheme, and cannot be relied upon to carry it out. The docket was endorsed with a long note by Lord Canning, which has been rubbed out. Telegraph messages received number 1149
6910. Mar - Apr 1860. Letter from Colonel C Davidson, Resident at Hyderabad. Is pleased with the appointment of Mr C B Saunders as Commissioner of the Assigned Districts; he will meet him at Daraseo as soon as he can safely leave Hyderabad which is always full of intrigues. Money is scarce in the Assigned Districts; if the Punjab plan of Revenue Survey is to be introduced it should be made by Settlement Officers who understand it, and states why he advocated the Bombay system. Has requested officially certain re-postings, on which he comments. The 19th Lancers are expected on 3 Apr and their barracks will be ready. 6911. Apr 1860. Letter from Captain W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. States that Captain Hyde and Mr Grant have been to Chindiah to examine the coal fields, but for want of boring instruments could only make a superficial inquiry. Reports that the rebel leaders Punjaub Sing and Dhur Sing are both alive and his spies are on their trail. Asks if the Governor General intends placing Bundelcund under him. Comments on Dr Abbott's successful treatment of cholera, which is raging at present. Copy of reply, Governor General thanks him for the information about coal and lignite. His Excellency does not think that Bundelcund will be put under Osborne. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6996
6912. Mar - Apr 1860. Letter from Major C Hervey, General Superintendent, Thuggee and Dacoity, Jubbulpore. Asks to be allowed to give to the Friend of India a copy of the statement of Mohamed Bux about Miss Wheeler. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6861
6913. Apr 1860. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. Gives some information from Major Meade, Meade returned to Gwalior with the Maharajah from Nurwur. The Maharajah desires a Khureeta from the Governor General for his efforts to carry out His Excellency's parting advice. Scindia is determined to go to England in spite of the wishes of his family. As Major Macpherson is prohibited by his medical advisers from returning to Gwalior, Shakespear hopes Major Meade will be allowed to act for him; suggests Captain Murray for Malwa, and Colonel Travers as Officiating Commandant of Meade's Horse. Sends a copy of the 'Mofussilite' newspaper, making an attack on the Nawab of Jowra, and asks if he (Shakespear) may soothe the Nawab with a message from the Governor General. Copy of reply, sending a note to the Nawab of Jowra, which the Governor General wishes to be kept secret. A Khureeta will be sent to Scindia. Colonel Travers will be appointed to act for Major Meade. 6916. Mar - Apr 1860. Letter from Mr W Blowers, Deputy Post Master General, Bombay. States that a robbery has taken place, and some mail for the Governor General's Camp is missing. Letter Chulan enclosed
6917. Apr 1860. Letter from Dr H Baillie, Native Hospital, Calcutta. Returns thanks for his appointment as Presidency Surgeon during the absence of Dr Webb.
6918. Apr 1860. Letter from Captain H Fraser, Hyderabad. Returns thanks for his appointment as Officiating 1st Assistant Resident during the absence of Major Thornhill on sick leave. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6800
6919. Apr 1860. Letter from Captain J W Bristow, Deputy Commissioner 2nd grade, Jhelun. Does not wish the interview he had with the Private Secretary at Sealkote reported to the Governor General until he is positively informed that he is to be removed from the Jhelun District. Copy of reply.
6920. Apr 1860. Letter from Captain J W Russell, Pay Master, Nagpore, Kamptee . Asks for political employment in the Madras Presidency. Copy of testimonial. Copy of reply, application noted, Governor General can make no promise.
6921. Apr 1860. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. States that the Maharajah Holkar is very anxious to know if the Governor General will visit his dominions. Copy of reply, the Governor General fears that it is very unlikely that he will be able to visit Central India on the present tour.
6923. Apr 1860. Copy of a letter to Colonel A C Sterling, Military Secretary to the Commander in Chief, Peterhop. Informs him that the 17th Lancers arrive at Hyderabad on 3 Apr; their barracks will be ready; they have cholera in their Camp. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6910
6924. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr R F Saunders, Officiating Deputy Commissioner of Kangra, Dhurmsala. Sends a letter from Mr Batten enclosing a letter from Messrs H and R Schlagintweit making inquiries about Gohst Mohumed, of Moradabad, employed by their late brother A Schlagintweit; sends a precis of various reports about A Schlagintweit. Letter from Saunders only remains. Copy of reply, returning the papers about Schlagintweit.
6925. Apr 1860. Letter from Messrs R C Lepage and Company, Calcutta. States that the book of Proclamations has been bound, sends a specimen of the lettering. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not think any lettering is necessary.
6926. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, on leave, Camp. Suggests Lieutenant W E Ramsay, late 17th Native Infantry for a vacancy as Assistant Commissioner 3rd class. 6931. Apr 1860. Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Lahore. In reply, will shortly forward a Memorandum on Rajah Tej Singh's case. The Rajah of Puttiala [Patiala] is expected. Copy of earlier letter, the Governor General is anxious to receive information about Rajah Tej Singh's case.
6932. Apr 1860. Copy of a reply to Mr H Cope, Umritsur. Acknowledging a letter and a box of [silkworm]cocoons; asking for further information. 6933. Apr 1860. Copy of a letter to Sir James Outram. Telling him that the Governor General has been so unwell since he reached Punjore as to be unable to write to Outram about the proceedings of the Madras Government. The Governor General has sent a telegram through Beadon entirely agreeing in Outram's determination that the Government of India should hold its course, though he foresees that what Madras has done in publishing the papers may make it very difficult. It would appear that another more defiant Minute has been recorded by Sir C Telegram [sic, presumably in error for Trevelyan]. 6934. Apr 1860. Letter from Captain G Pengree, Invalid Establishment, Simla. At the Suggestion of Mr Harington encloses copy of a letter from himself to Harington assigning reasons against the Income and Tobacco taxes, and in favour of Licence duty (letter no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement.
6935. Mar - Apr 1860. Letter from Mr W P Palmer, Civil Auditor, Calcutta. Sends a list of the Fixed Establishments under the Government of Bengal in the General, Judicial, Revenue, Customs, Salt, Opium, and Marine Departments as they stood on 1 Mar 1859 (No longer enclosed).
6936. Apr 1860. Copy of a letter to the Post Master of Simla. Asking him to make arrangements for the despatch of an express on 19 Apr to connect with the Bombay Mail.
6937. Apr 1860. Letter from the Proprietor of the Aftab Alumtab newspaper, Agra. About the bill in payment for his newspaper. Two 1/2 anna stamps. Copy of reply. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6623
6942. Apr 1860. Letter from the Reverend A Wilkinson, Calcutta. Has sent a treatise on religious matters to the Governor General. Two letters, treatise not enclosed. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
6943. Apr 1860. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. Recommends Major G E Ashburner for the office of Commissioner for the introduction of the paper currency should such an appointment be open to a military man. Ashburner will be thrown out of employment by the return of Lieutenant W Shakespear in Jun. Copy of reply, Ashburner is not likely to have the special qualifications necessary. Private Secretary has just heard of Major Macpherson's death; this will give Major Meade the substantive post.
6944. Apr 1860. Copy of a Telegraph Message from Mr W Grey, Secretary to Government of India Home Department, Calcutta. Mr Chapman having gone to England, asks whether Lord Ulick Brown may be confirmed in his acting appointment of Under Secretary to Government Home Department.
6946. Apr 1860. Letter from Baboo Radha Kissen Sett, Officiating Treasurer to the Governor General, Simla. Asks to be confirmed in his appointment. Copy of reply, he has been confirmed.
6947. Apr 1860. Letter from Dr J Pitchall, Assistant Surgeon 7th Irregular Cavalry, Governor General's Camp. Asks for civil or political employment. Copy of reply, application noted, suitable posts are very rare.
6948. Apr 1860. Letter from Lieutenant C J Middleton, late 40th Native Infantry, Calcutta. Asks for civil employment. Copy of reply, application noted.
