Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 6952 to 7000, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 70 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 6901 to 7000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 6958, 6959, 6966, 6967, 6968, 6969, 6972, 6973, 6976, 6980, 6982, 6987, 6988, 6989, 6991, 6994, 6995, 6996, and 6997 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

6953. Apr - May 1860. Letter from Messrs Lepage and Company, Calcutta. In reply, will send the last published Army List, and the Portfolio of Proclamations. Copy of earlier letter asking for the Army List.
6954. Apr 1860. Copy of a letter to the Assistant in Charge, Telegraph Office, Simla. Stating that only one of the bills sent by the Electric Telegraph Office appears to have been sent by the Private Secretary; the other is returned.
6955. Apr 1860. Copy of a letter to the Post Master of Simla. Informing him that it is unlikely that the Governor General will have his letters ready in time for the ordinary despatch, and asking if there would be any difficulty in arranging a special despatch later. 6955a. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr C M Aitchison, Under Secretary to the Government of India Foreign Department, Simla. Sends a copy of a telegram from Sir R Shakespear, giving his address until 3 May.
6956. Apr 1860. Copy of a letter to the Post Master, Simla. Stating that the Governor General wishes the Express to go on the 20th and not on 19 Apr. Private Secretary will telegraph Bombay accordingly. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6955
6957. Apr 1860. Letter from Captain E M Lawford, Her Majesty's Light Cavalry, Kamptee. Asks to be appointed to the Thuggee Department. Copy of reply, he should have Major Hervey's recommendation for the post. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence nos. 6990, 7001
6958. Apr 1860. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. Submits correspondence with Captain Cockburn remonstrating with Shakespear for recommending Captain Travers to act as Commandant of Meade's Horse. Four papers. Copy of reply, the Governor General agrees with Shakespear's reply to Cockburn, and believes he has no cause for complaint. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence nos. 6913, 6974
6959. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner, Cis Sutlej States, Simla. Asks for the Private Secretary's good offices on behalf of Mian Oomed Singh of Baghat, whose country was resumed by Lord Dalhousie, and confirmed by the Court of Directors. The Mian would not accept this, and has no pension. Barnes suggests two ways of settling the case; either by restoring him to his country on payment of an annual sum, or by keeping the country and assigning a sum equal to the net revenue to the Mian, say 3,000 Rupees. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary thinks that the Governor General is disposed to take a favourable view of the case of Oomed Singh, and will dispose of it, if possible, before leaving Simla. Private Secretary believes that the Mian was scurvily treated. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 6980
6960. Apr 1860. Letter from Shaikh Meahjaun, Mooktian of Gunja Bux, late Dewan of Bhurtpoor, Simla. Sends a petition asking for the release from prison of the late Dewan, or for a trial of the charges against the prisoner. Petition no longer enclosed. Enclosure transferred to Secretary to Government Foreign Department with the Governor General.
6961. Apr 1860. Copy of a letter to the Post Master of Simla. Sending some private letters to be sent with the Governor General's Express to Bombay.
6962. Apr 1860. Copy of a letter to the Editor of the Delhi Gazette. Sending him a report of the first operations against the Mahsood Vuzeerees, [Mahsud Waziris] with a copy of the Proclamation issued by Major Tayler and Brigadier Earl Chamberlain.
6963. Apr 1860. Letter from Captain W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. Sends a letter from Lieutenant Acton asking if he may retain his appointment if his extension of leave is granted; as Acton is unlikely to return, Osborne asks for a good unmarried officer in his place. 6964. Apr - May 1860. Copy of a letter to the Traffic Manager, Hindustan and Simla Transport Train, Simla. Asking him to forward to the Agent of the Government Bullock Train at Umballa 27 boxes and trunks as per accompanying list. 6966. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr J H Lane, Inspector in Charge, Agra Electric Telegraph Office, Agra. In reply, about cipher messages. Cipher message from Sir Bartle Frere enclosed. Lane's letter no longer enclosed. Copy of earlier letter of complaint; cipher messages written in pencil are useless for record; and those sent are not fit to be laid before the Governor General. 6967. Apr 1860. Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Lahore. Returns the papers about the proceedings of the Madras Government, with regard to the financial measures of the Government of India (Not enclosed). Hopes that Lord Canning may yet give up his proposed visit to Calcutta at the present time. Copy of earlier letter, sending papers about the Madras Government 's opposition to the financial measures. Sir James Outram has been very ill, and must leave India. Out of consideration for the Governor General, Outram would not let it be known how ill he was, but Sir B Frere has told the Governor General who leaves therefore for Calcutta about 7 May. Returns the papers about the Madras Government's resistance to the new taxation proposals. Four papers enclosed: 1. 6969. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr W Edwards, Civil and Sessions Judge, Benares. Asks that his name be inserted in the two despatches of the Governor General on the services of civilians during the Mutiny. Copy of reply, polite refusal.
6970. Apr 1860. Letter from Lieutenant C V Jenkins, Assistant Commissioner, Mittenkote. Sends an application asking to be appointed an 1st class Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab. Copy of reply, request refused.
6972. Apr 1860. Copy of a letter to the Right Reverend Bishop of Calcutta. Sending him correspondence about the Cawnpore Memorial Church (Not enclosed). 6973. Apr 1860. Letter from Sirdar Jainal Singh, Lahore. Further to his petition for the continuation to him and his heirs in perpetuity of Jageers and pensions; for the continuation of himself in his office of Extra Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, with an allowance; wishes to appear personally and urge his suit.
6975. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr C M Crisp, late Post Master of Rangoon, Calcutta. Sends a Memorial (no longer enclosed) to the Governor General.
6976. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner, Umballa. Returns papers about the Sunthee Sikhs, and states the differences between them and the Ladharan Sikhs. (Papers not enclosed)
6977. Apr 1860. Letter from Colonel C Davidson, Resident at Hyderabad. Suggests Lieutenant Tweedie, Adjutant of 1st Hyderabad Cavalry for the appointment of Officiating 2nd Assistant to the Resident at Hyderabad, as Mr C Grant has declined the post. Copy of reply, it would seem from the Army List that Tweedie has not yet passed his examination; could he make an alternative suggestion? 6979. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr G W Elliot, Bombay Civil Service, Broach. Asks to be allowed to act for Mr Probyn as 1st Assistant to the Accountant General of Bombay. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his application has been transferred to Mr Lushington in Calcutta.
6980. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner of the Cis Sutlej States, Simla. In reply to the Governor General's note gives some details about the pensions allotted to the widows and relatives of the late Rana of Bughaut, and states that he is disposed to regard Oomeid Singh's claims favourably, and would therefore recommend the restoration of the estate not as a concession of right, but as a favour, in payment of an annual tribute of 2,000 Rupees. In any arrangement made General Innes must be guaranteed his lands and tenants, paying to the Chief of Bughaut the revenue he now pays the British Government; or the Government might retain lands including his equivalent of the tribute, and release the rest free of tribute. Oomeid Singh should also bind himself to afford adequate provision to the widows of his cousin Rana Bijey Singh. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence nos. 6959

6982. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr C M Aitchison, Under Secretary to Government, with the Governor General, Simla. Sends a copy of a letter from Sir C Wood to the Governor General announcing the despatch of a box of silver medals for presentation to the Governor General and certain officers of the civil and military services in India in acknowledgement of services rendered in connection with the introduction into England in 1857 of several species of Himalayan pheasants. 6987. Apr 1860. Copy of a letter to Mr C K Dove, Post Master General, Calcutta. Giving the dates and stages of the Governor General's route down country; and the names of the chief members of his party.
6988. Apr 1860. Copy of a reply to Mr P L Selater, Secretary to the Zoological Society, London. Thanking the Council of the Society for the silver medal sent to the Governor General for his part in the collection of Himalayan birds for the Society in 1857. 6989. Apr 1860. Letter from Captain W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. Asks if the Governor General would sanction his selling the articles on the enclosed list to the Rajah's Minister. Cholera is decreasing. Osborne does not intend to leave India until early next Feb. List of household goods, glass, tents enclosed. Copy of reply, the Governor General thinks that Osborne should send his things to Allahabad to be sold, where the Rajah's Minister may buy them if he chooses.
6991. Apr 1860. Letter from the Honourable Sir J Outram, President in Council, Calcutta. Acknowledges letter of 8 Apr; if Lord Canning has decided upon returning to Calcutta whether Outram takes leave or not, he will leave for Galle for a month; regrets the inconvenience he is causing to so many. Sends a letter to the Governor General (no longer enclosed).
6992. Apr 1860. Letter from Lieutenant G A F Houchen, Assistant Superintendent of the Hindustan and Tibet Road, Simla. Sends a copy of Captain Brigadier's answer to Mr C Gubbins about injury to Gubbins' estate in Simla by the Road authorities, and says there is no other correspondence on the subject; with comments. Cover only. Endorsed: Transferred to Secretary to Government Public Works Department.
6993. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr P H A Snook, Assistant in the office of the Adjutant General of the Army, Simla. Asks for a grant of 300 Rupees under the circumstances stated. Cover only. Endorsed: Transferred to Secretary to Government Foreign Department
6994. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr C Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. In reply, believes that Colonel Bruce's estimate of the population of Oudh is not much beyond the mark, and gives returns from the several Commissioners; believes the population is little less than 7 million.
6995. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr A F Bellasis, Bombay Civil Service, Surat. Asks for payment of the Governor General's subscription to the Hyderabad church windows. Comments on Sir C Trevelyan's Minute on Mr Wilson's financial scheme; observes that if the Act which is to regulate the collection of the income tax contains 281 pages of print, such complicated and intricate law is unsuited to India. Copy of reply, the Governor General's donation was sent to the Mercantile Bank of Bombay in 1859. The Madras Minute was so belligerent that it has caused some anxiety in the Bengal Presidency as to the feasibility of carrying out Wilson's scheme. 6996. Apr 1860. Letter from Captain J W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. States that Dr Buist having examined the slate and sandstone taken from below the lignite on the Oonrrar, believes that there exists good coal; and the Rajah has offered to pay 9,000 Rupees towards a good mineralogical survey, in which it might be worth the Government's while to co-operate. Expects in a few years large iron works to be established by the Railway Company, as coal and iron abound; also copper, which will probably be worked. In the Rijiragoogurh District there is what is supposed to be fire(?) clay. Regrets that the Bundelcund arrangements are not to be carried out, as that Province is too far from Indore to be efficiently managed. Cholera is on the decrease. The Rajah is anxious to alter his northern frontier, and he wants to give up the Sitlaha Pergunnah in exchange for lands in the south; Osborne will write officially on the subject. 6997. Apr 1860. Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner, Cis Sutlej States. Returns Mr Wingfield's report about taxation in Oudh, with comments. Is pleased to see the Talookdars identifying themselves with the Government. The sooner the lump assessment and direct and equitable taxation is reverted to the better. The earlier Honorary Magistrates are appointed the better. Copy To Mr Beadon.
6998. Apr - May 1860. Letter from Major G Hutchinson, Military Secretary to the Punjab Government, Lahore. Asks for the Private Secretary's aid towards effecting the transfer to Bengal of a nephew of the late Mr Thomason, Lieutenant Governor of the North West Provinces, who has just landed at Madras as an Ensign. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot interfere; Hutchinson might write to Sir John Lawrence.
6999. Apr - May 1860. Letter from Mr W Boate, Bombay. Asks to be appointed Deputy Post Master of Bombay. Copy of reply, he has insufficient experience; but could apply to the Director General.
