Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 7151 to 7200, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 72 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 7151 to 7200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 7156, 7159, 7161, 7163, 7164, 7166, 7168, 7169, 7170, 7172, 7176, 7177, 7183, 7184, 7187, 7193, 7195, 7196, and 7197 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

7152. May 1860. Copy of a letter to Mr M H Court, Magistrate of Allahabad. Giving details of the Governor General's movements, and asking for carriages to meet the special train at Allahabad.

Copy of earlier letter about Mr Maconochie, sending Wingfield an extract of a letter from Mr Hume, Magistrate of Etawah, speaking highly of his efficiency. 7163. Jun 1860. Letter from Colonel G Jameson, President, Military Finance Commission, Calcutta. Reports that his doctor has insisted that he proceed to England by the steamer of 18th Jun. Reports on the state of the business of the Finance Commission; regrets very much that he must leave before the commencement of the Military Audit and Account question.
7164. May 1860. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. Suggests the reply that should be made to any request that Holkar may make for reward during his proposed visit to Calcutta. To Mr Beadon. Copy
7165. Jun 1860. Letter from Mr C H Marshall, Bhowanipore. Asks for a reply to his petition, and asks for employment. Copy of reply, his letter has already been answered.
7166. May 1860. Anonymous letter from an English lady, London. Asks the Governor General's support for those who seek to proclaim to the heathen world the word of Truth. One 6d stamp; three 1d stamps.
7167. Jun 1860. Letter from Serjeant A C Galbreath, Assistant Overseer in charge of Public Works, Barrackpore Sub Division, Barrackpore. Applies for the post of Superintendent of Barrackpore Park.
7168. May - Jun 1860. Letter from Aga Mohun Lal, Kuppoorthulla. Extols the liberal policy of the Governor General and the princely gifts conferred upon the loyal natives; observes that had his own services during the Mutiny been known, he too would have received reward. Asks to be allowed to pay his respects personally. Copy of reply, he need not trouble to come to Calcutta to see the Governor General. There is no record of his services during the Mutiny. 7169. Jun 1860. Letter from Mr E L Brandreth, Commissioner of Delhi. Replies about Moonshee Mohun Lal. Copy of earlier letter asking for information. See also Private Secretary's Correspondence no. 7168
7170. May - Jun 1860. Letter from Mr F Cooper, Deputy Commissioner Delhi. Hopes that the Secretary of State may be reminded about the revision of civil salaries. Delhi is a most interesting place. ½ anna stamp. Copy of reply, as far as Private Secretary can learn, nothing has been done in England in the matter of assimilation of Punjab salaries to those of the North West Provinces, nor does Private Secretary think anything will be done until Mr Wilson's financial schemes are set on foot. He thinks that if the Lieutenant Governor pressed the point, the Indian Government would forward his representation to the Home authorities. Financial schemes, the Indigo Commission, and Sir H Rose are the only topics talked of in Calcutta.
7171. May - Jun 1860. Letter from Captain W F B Laurie, Commissary of Ordnance, Nagpore Force, Seetabuldee. Asks for His Excellency's opinion on Laurie's Report on the Seetabuldee Lectures. 7172. May - Jun 1860. Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Murree. Sends a copy of a letter from Major Taylor reporting the result of the expedition against the Muhsood Wuzeerees. It would have been satisfactory had the Muhsoods come to terms, as it is they will have to be blockaded, but their prestige is quite gone. Montgomery reports that owing to the suspension of the Chief Engineer by the Agent, the Punjab Railway is seriously affected. Politically all is well. Governor General to Sir C Wood 13 Jun 1860

7174. Jun 1860. Letter from Baboo Trilochun Roy, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Private Secretary. Copy of reply, if his business cannot be put in writing, he may call on the Private Secretary on 7th Jun.
7175. Jun - Jul 1860. Letter from Messrs Chesson and Woodhall, Agents of the Home News, Bombay. Send a receipt for payment for a copy of the Home News for Lady Canning. ½ anna stamp. Receipt no longer enclosed. Copy of earlier letter sending payment. Endorsed: Receipt sent to Treasurer.

7177. May - Jun 1860. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J Laughton, Engineers, on leave, Simla. Sends a memorandum about reductions in the cost of establishments in the Public Works Department. 7180. Jun 1860. Letter from Major H Garden, Assistant Quarter Master General, Calcutta. Asks for his brother to be considered an applicant for the post of Vaccine Superintendent at Simla. Copy of earlier letter, asking what was the result of the affair of the Lahore jewels in which Mr Cope was concerned, and did the result affect Cope's character. Says that Colonel Drummond has sent in a Memorial which Mr Edmonstone will transmit to the Supreme Government asking for the fulfilment of the late Mr Colvin's promise of a bonus in cash for Drummond's discovery of iron ore. 7190. Jun 1860. Copy of a letter to Captain G Delane, Superintendent Mysore Princes, Calcutta. Informing him that the Governor General consents with pleasure to the 'Pundnameh Bupranee' (?) being dedicated by Prince Buhram Shah to His Excellency.
7191. Jun 1860. Letter from Major A C Plowden, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, Calcutta. Replies as to the rent paid by the Honourable Mr Grant for the use of Lowther Castle. 7192. Jun 1860. Letter from Lieutenant C P Hunter, Her Majesty's 5th Europeans, Adjutant of 1st Assam Light Infantry Battalion, Dinapore. Asks for another appointment; would like to be appointed Political (?) Assistant to the Commissioner of Assam. Copy of reply, application noted; the Lieutenant Governor has not applied for the services of a military officer for Assam.

7195. Jun 1860. Letter from Captain O J M L Farrington, Deputy Commissioner, Umritsur. Asks for a reconsideration of the orders passed on Dr De Renzie for his conduct in connection with Dr Ross' treatment of Farrington's late wife, and that Dr De Renzie may be re-employed. 7196. Jun 1860. Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Murree. Sends a letter from Brigadier Chamberlain, dated Camp Bunnoo, 27th May, stating that having failed to make any arrangements with the Muhsoods, a blockade of their mountains has become inevitable. If this does not succeed, he would advocate further punishment of the tribe. Is not quite sure that the attempts at reconciliation were all that they should be. He entered the Hills relying upon Nuwab Shah Nuwaz Khan, and returned with an altered opinion of him; he can now show his loyalty in carrying out the embargo. In Mr Cope, the Lahore correspondent of the Englishman, the Government has an enemy. Copy
7197. Jun 1860. Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, on leave, 5 marches from Simla. Has requested Colonel Barrow to report occasionally on the progress of the collection of taxes in Oudh. Believes that the agitation was caused by Lucknow and the North West Provinces, in the hope that the taxes would not be extended to them; also caused by the Europeans and the newspapers. Believes that the Income Tax is very good save in its application to the landholders. Further comments. Also copy of this letter.
