7344a. Jun - Jul 1860 Letter from Major R Meade, Political Agent, Gwalior. Has tried to obtain proof from Sindia about the bad feeling among the native troops, but has failed. Some of Scindia's statements have been modified, others have been reiterated. The native troops believe that there is to be an immediate reduction of 10 Corps of Infantry and 4 of Cavalry from the present native establishment, and that the new taxes would be levied from all native officers. Scindia believes that in the event of an outbreak caused by the imposition of the new taxes, it will be a popular insurrection, and not a military one, and that the 1st movement will be in the Punjab. Much excitement was also caused by the belief that the Disarming Act would be extended into Rajpootana. Much of the present alarm was excited by the native Umlahs(?) and establishments, whose exactions in the name of Government, are greater than hitherto. Meade still believes that the rumours are of no great importance, and will be circulated whenever casual discontent is felt among the troops. Since Sindia's return to Gwalior, everything has been perfectly quiet. See also 7282, 7283, 7311, 7343, 7344, 7370b, 7370g.
