Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 7351 to 7400, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 74 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 7301 to 7400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 7352, 7353, 7367, 7368, 7369, 7370a, 7370b, 7370c, 7370d, 7370e, 7370f, 7370g, 7370h 7372, 7373, 7378, 7379, 7385, 7388, 7390, 7395, and 7396 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Note that number 7387 was transferred to the Treasurer.

7352. Jun - Jul 1860 Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner, Cis Sutlej States, Simla. Returns thanks for his CB. Remarks that there seem to be many names omitted for honours, such as Messrs Grant, Edmonstone, Beadon etc. He does not believe rumours of an expected rising of the native army. 7353. Jun 1860 Letter from Colonel S A Abbott, Commissioner of Lucknow, Lucknow. Says that an unexpected difficulty in the City tax collection was created by the Police, who started an inquiry into the proceedings of the Extra Assistant who was charged with bribery and corruption by the 'Oudh Gazette'. The Police Officers have been removed. One of them reported officially that the charges were true, but could not substantiate his assertion. Sends a letter from Dr Fayrer, asking for a civil CB or for one of the appointments as Honourable Surgeon to the Queen. 7368. Jun - Jul 1860 Letter from Colonel C Davidson, Resident at Hyderabad. Acknowledges Telegraph Message in reply to his note of 15 Jun about honours; he requested by telegraph that has letter be not submitted to the Governor General as it is his aim not to give offence to the Governor General. 7370. Jul 1860 Letter from Mr A Boyle, Agent, East India Coal Company, Calcutta. Asks for an interview for Mr Harrison, late Agent to the Company, to claim compensation in full for their losses during the rebellion. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his letter has been transferred to the Financial Department. An interview will be granted, if there is anything to be said which cannot be put in writing
7370a. Jun - Jul 1860 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. Sends a note from the Ex-Nawab of Banda and a translation of a Persian letter, which letter the Ex-Nawab received from Gwalior, containing treasonable matter. It does not appear that the native troops have generally combined against the Income Tax. See also 7401
7370b. Jul 1860 Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Murree. Returns thanks for copies of 3 of Major Meade's letters. Has no doubt that there is some truth mixed up with much exaggeration in Scindia's statement. Native troops are easily excited; massing of them should always be avoided. Suggests that Sir H Rose's attention be drawn to the great necessity of keeping the strictest watch on the guns in cantonments. Copy of earlier letter, sending copies of Meade's letters. 7370c. Jun 1860 Copy of a letter to the Honourable G F Edmonstone, Nainee Tal. Informing him that the Governor General had received a cipher telegram from Sir R Shakespear, giving information received from Scindia that the native army is about to revolt, when the new Income Tax is promulgated (telegram given in full). With reference to this, the Governor General sent Edmonstone a cipher message, passing on the information, and asking his views (telegram given in full). Confidential. 7370f. Jul 1860 Copy of a letter to the Honourable G F Edrnonstone, Nynee Tal. Sending him copies of letters from Major Meade. The more the matter has been sifted, the less tangible the evidence becomes; but it seems clear that Scindia was sincere in what he said, and Private Secretary has no doubt that this Income Tax, which Mr Wilson has been so long brooding over, will be the best handle for disaffection any rebel has ever had. The Bombay Express has come in, and again there is no word of the civil honours

Major Barrow having shown him the Private Secretary's letter conveying the Governor General's strong disapproval of the course adopted by Ramdyal in bringing an action for libel against the 'Oudh Gazette', explains why he (Wingfield ) approves of the libel action, and hopes the Governor General will modify his views. 7385. Jul 1860 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel L Barrow, Officiating Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. In reply, sends a statement of the number of Chuprassees on the Oudh Establishment before and after the Mutiny, with comments. Has heard from the Civil Judge and Mr Bayley that the Oudh Gazette report of the libel case is a gross misrepresentation of the evidence. Office memorandum.
