Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 7451 to 7500, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 75 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 7401 to 7500’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 7455, 7456, 7458, 7461, 7467, 7469, 7473, 7478, 7479, 7483, 7490, 7491, 7494, 7497, and 7498 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Note that number 7460 was transferred to the Treasurer.
7451. Jul - Aug 1860 Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Kurree. Sends a letter from Sir Herbert Edwardes to Sir John Lawrence about Lieutenant J Eckford, Engineers, Deputy Superintendent of Workshops Roorkee, who wishes to join the Punjab Commission; also a letter from Captain Maclagan of Roorkee about Eckford; would be glad to have Eckford in the Commission. Copy of reply, the Governor General regrets that he cannot comply with Sir Robert's recommendation, as he has for a long time been urging the necessity of strengthening the Corps of Engineers

7453. Aug 1860 Letter from Rai Sreenarain Bysack Bahadoor, Calcutta. In reply, has sent a Memorial to the Governor General through the Foreign Secretary, asking for a pension for his services in the Toshakhana. See also 7426
7454. Jul - Aug 1860 Letter from the Honourable J R Lewis, Resident, Penang. Hopes that the mangosteens sent by the 'Lancefield' have arrived, has sent five more baskets by the 'Fiery Cross'. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement
7455. Aug - Sep 1860 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. In reply, says it will take a long time to find out the amount of land under opium cultivation in the native states under the Central India Agency. Is preparing a table showing the actual cost of cultivating a Beegah of land for opium; hopes that the Government, will be very careful about raising the duty, for the falling off of exports has been due to increased duties, and not to the Mutiny or drought. Copy of earlier letter asking for private information about the amount of opium produced in Malwa.

7457. Jul - Aug 1860 Letter from Mr J McKennie, Deputy Master Attendant, Madras. Sends a copy of his Memorial to the Honorary Court, asking for promotion in the event of a vacancy. Copy of reply, acknowledgement; application noted. See also 7632
7458. Aug 1860 Letter from Mr W S Halsey, Private Secretary to the Financial Member of Council, Calcutta. Says that Mr Wilson is too ill to attend Council this day, and would be grateful if the interview with the Financial Commission were postponed

7462. Aug 1860 Letter from Dr J Forsyth, Principal Inspector General Medical Department, Calcutta. In reply about the six candidates for the post of Superintendent of Vaccination at Simla, the two best are Dr Tuson and Dr Garden. Copy of earlier letter, asking for Forsyth's opinion of the candidates
7463. Aug 1860 Letter from Mr W Knighton, Calcutta. Asks to be allowed to go to Lucknow and place himself under Mr Wingfield's orders on the understanding that he shall pass an examination within a fixed time. Copy of reply, he has been appointed on probation. See also 7465, 7475, 7480, 7481
7464. Aug 1860 Letter from Captain J White, Superintendent State Yacht Establishment, Calcutta. Reports that the yacht 'Sonamooky' should be docked for repairs. Copy of reply, the Governor General wishes the work to be done at once, so that the yacht may be ready in the last week of September without fail. See also 7547, 7605

7467. Aug 1860 Letter from Mr W S Halsey, Private Secretary to the Financial Member of Council, Calcutta. Sends the instructions to the Police Committee drawn up by Mr Temple (not enclosed). Mr Wilson's health is very bad; his doctor says he is to do nothing for the next 3 months
7468. Aug 1860 Letter from Captain W White, Superintendent State Yacht Establishment, Calcutta. Recommends Summadalley Gulleah of State Row Boat number 1, for a pension. Cover only. Endorsed: Sent to Treasurer
7469. Jul - Aug 1860 Letter from Mr A O Hume, Magistrate and Collector of Etawah. Asks if the Governor General would consider granting some confiscated villages as a kind of endowment for the Managers of the High School at Etawah. Also asks for 6 months special leave to see his mother in England. Copy of reply, the Governor General will not grant land to the school, reasons given. The Lieutenant Governor is the person who may grant leave, if he thinks fit.
7470. Aug 1860 Letter from Captain J Elliot, Executive Engineer, Barrackpore Division. Sends a requisition for work done at the half-way stable (not enclosed). Repairs of the riverside road are in hand; should Lady Canning be coming to Barrackpore, begs that the postillions may be directed not to approach the house by that road. See also 7424, 7435

7473. Aug 1860 Letter from Colonel A P Phayre, Commissioner of Pegu, Calcutta. Asks to be allowed to return to Burma by the next steamer. He has prepared a memorandum on proposals for the Police of Pegu. Copy of reply, the Governor General hopes to be able to release Phayre in time for the next steamer, but until he has considered the memorandum, he cannot promise anything. See also 7474

7475. Aug 1860 Letter from Mr A R Young, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. In reply, says that Mr Blandford has been appointed a Deputy Collector upon the usual conditions of passing an examination within the prescribed period, and there was nothing peculiar about his appointment. 7478. Aug 1860 Letter from Colonel A P Phayre, Commissioner of Pegu, Calcutta. Sends two memoranda on the Police of Pegu, and on the force to hold the military stations in lieu of the Native Infantry regiments now stationed in Pegu. See also 7473, 7474
7479. Aug 1860 Letter from Mr W S Halsey, Secretary to Civil Finance Commission, Calcutta. Sends two circulars asking for information about the number of orderly peons and chuprassees employed in the Private Secretary's Office and asks whether it would be possible to reduce the establishment. Copy of reply, the whole of the expenses of the Private Secretary's Office are paid from the Durbar Fund. It would therefore appear unnecessary to supply the information required

7494. Aug 1860 Letter from Captain E Smyth, 2nd in command, 22nd Punjab Infantry, Almorah. Asks that, if not already done, the Governor General's recommendation to the Home Government that Smyth's proposed expedition to Chinese Tartary should be allowed to count as Indian service, should be sent off at once. Asks whether other officers would be allowed to accompany him, on the same terms. 1/2 anna stamp.
