Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 7501 to 7550, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 76 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 7501 to 7600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 7501, 7502, 7503, 7504, 7510, 7511, 7512, 7516, 7519, 7520, 7521, 7522, 7524, 7528, 7529, 7535, 7537, 7542, 7543, 7546, 7548, 7549, 7552, 7553, 7554, 7555, and 7556 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
7501. Aug 1860 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. As the Oudh Gazette under its present management will always be troublesome to the Government asks if he and the other Civil Officers can buy the shares, the majority of which are now for sale, in order to exercise control over the paper. Copy of reply, request refused. If it were known to Government that any senior officer was a shareholder in any newspaper, the officer would either have to give up office or the paper.

7503. Aug 1860 Copy of a letter to Colonel G Balfour, Civil Service. Private Secretary has shown to the Governor General the papers Balfour left, and the Governor General asks Balfour, Colonel Simson and Mr Temple to attend the Council after the Secretaries have left.
7504. Aug 1860 Letter from Mr J W Halsey, Secretary to the Civil Finance Commission, Calcutta. Sends a packet of letters and an unfinished resolution, by direction of Mr Wilson; other papers will follow. Covering letter only. See also 7511

7508. Aug 1860 Letter from Mr M Durup de Domball, indigo planter, Soojunpore Factory, Nuddea. Asks for an appointment in the Police Corps, Judicial, or any other line, for his son. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Lieutenant Governor.

7510. Aug 1860 Letter from Mr C Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. With reference to his proposals about the shares of the Oudh Gazette, says that there was no idea of entering into negotiations until the trial for libel has been concluded. See also 7501
7511. Aug 1860 Letter from Mr W S Halsey, Secretary to the Civil Finance Commission, Calcutta. At Mr Wilson's request sends copies of two letters. Has been very ill, and goes to sea on Monday. Asks what Lord Canning would like done about his letters to Mr Wilson. Copy of reply, the Governor General would like his letters to Wilson to be sent to the Private Secretary. See also 7504
7512. Aug 1860 Letter from Major A Strange, 7th Madras Cavalry, late Astronomical Assistant Great Trigonometrical Survey, Calcutta. Asks for an interview to explain his removal from the Survey. Copy of reply, a decision has already been arrived at in his case, and there was nothing in it which was otherwise than honourable to Strange. Private Secretary thinks Strange should await the orders of Government; should he thereafter desire an interview, the Governor General will be glad to see him. See also 7249, 7288, 7600

7516. Aug 1860 Letter from Major A C Plowden, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, Alipore. Sends 2 notes from Prince Gholam Mahomed, declining the office of a Commissionership of Income Tax, because he cannot conscientiously fulfil the duties, as the taxation measure seems objectionable to him. 7517. Aug 1860 Letter from Dr F N Macnamara, Officiating Secretary, La Martiniere, Calcutta. Asks for the Governor General to preside at the distribution of prizes on 13 Sep. Copy of reply, the Governor General will probably be unable to be present.
7518. Aug 1860 Letter from Colonel H J Warre, Military Secretary to His Excellency the Commander in Chief, Barrackpore. Sends an application for the post of Superintendent of the Barrackpore Park from Mr M J Hallnan to the Military Secretary. Copy of reply to Warre, there have been nearly 20 applications for this post, but only 1 unsatisfactory man had any knowledge of gardening.
7519. Aug 1860 Letter from Mrs E Murray, wife of Captain Murray, commanding the Sappers at Darjeeling. Sends a letter for the Governor General, asks for the Private Secretary's assistance in having Mrs Binny removed from her house, as owing to her influence over her husband she has no peace of mind. Lord Dalhousie on a similar occasion gave every assistance to Mrs Hinde by sending Miss Castello back to where she came from. Copy of reply, the Governor General will not interfere. See also 7374
7520 Aug 1860 Letter from Mr M Court, Magistrate and Collector of Allahabad, on deputation to Calcutta. Asks if the Police Commission can have the rooms lately used by the Indigo Commission, and to whom application should be made. Copy of reply, Private Secretary has written to Grey. See also 7526
7521. Aug 1860 Letter from Dr R Moir, in Medical Charge, Government Stud Establishment, Haupper. In reply, apologizes for an expression in his letter to the Governor General and for sending the letter in the manner he did. Copy of earlier letter, objecting to Moir having sent his letter to Lady Canning 'as the only certain means of access to his Lordship'. His application for advancement has been noted.
7522. Aug 1860 Letter from Mr W S Halsey, Secretary to the Civil Finance Commission, Calcutta. Sends all the letters that he has found of the Governor General's letters to Mr Wilson; if His Excellency returns any, he should know that Mr Wilson's friends at home are all 'of a literary turn'. He would only wish for 3, showing that the doctors had fully done their duty. No doubt the family would be thankful for any letters they could get. See also 7524

7527. Aug 1860 Letter from Captain R B Dundas, late 38th Native Infantry, Interpreter, Her Majesty's 48th, Allahabad. Applies for the post of Cantonment Joint Magistrate at Lucknow. Copy of reply, his application will be considered in the event of a vacancy. See also 7728
7528. Aug 1860 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. States that as he has not yet received the full details of the libel case, he will be longer than he hoped to be in submitting his report. Comments on the judgement; the judge might have given heavier damages, had he not been an uncovenanted officer with friends and relatives all over the country. 7529. Aug 1860 Letter from Colonel G Balfour, Member of the Military Finance Commission, Calcutta. The Governor General having asked for information as to the number of Depot Battalions in Great Britain and Ireland to which men belonging to Corps of the British Home Service serving in India are attached, sends a Parliamentary Paper number 262 containing a return showing the number of Depot Battalions. With reference to amalgamation, believes that the question of absentee officers has not been fully considered, and that difficulties would arise about pay and passage money. 7535. Aug 1860 Letter from Mr W H McGowan, Officiating Post Master of Calcutta. States that 8 private letters were posted by the Government House peon for despatch by the Express on 14 Aug and asks for payment for these. Office memorandum. Note from Mr Grey. Copy of reply, sending payment.
7536. Aug 1860 Letter from Baboo Trilochun Roy, Calcutta. Sends a paper to the Governor General on good government; asks for employment in the taxation Department. Copy of reply, he should apply to the local Government.
7537. Aug 1860 Letter from Mr G Turnbull, Chief Engineer, East Indian Railway, Calcutta. Sends 3 copies of his last, printed, 1/2 yearly Report. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement; a much greater amount of work has been done, than His Excellency expected. The Governor General is ready for the ceremony of opening the line to Raj Mahal, whenever the date is announced.

7542. Aug 1860 Copy of a reply to Major General Sir R Birch. Sending him a report on a scheme of Mr P Orr for pulling punkahs by water agency; as the scheme has been favourably reported on at Madras, His Excellency considers it might be tried out in a suitable place, the Fort for instance. 7544. Aug 1860 Letter from Captain W D Dickson, Commanding Depot, 3rd Native Infantry, Malligaum. Asks for the post of Assistant, Thuggee Department, Belgaum, in place of that at Agra. Sends a letter from the Military Secretary to the Commander in Chief (no longer enclosed), exempting him from going to China. Copy of reply, Mr Hearn was gazetted to this appointment on 19 May; request refused. See also 6332, 6791, 7681
7545. Aug 1860 Letter from Major A Fytche, Deputy Commissioner, Bassein. There being some probability of the Pegu, Tenasserim and Arracan Provinces being united under Lieutenant Colonel Phayre as Chief Commissioner, applies for one of the appointments that will then be made. Should there be no amalgamation, asks for an appointment in any of the extra-regulation Provinces, superior to the one he now holds. Copy of reply, his claims will not be forgotten. Nothing has yet been decided about the amalgamation of the Provinces.
7546. Aug 1860 Letter from Commander J Rennie, Superintendent of Marine, Calcutta. Says that the demand for boats for public service is as heavy as ever, and will continue until the Ganges Flotilla is thoroughly reorganised. In consequence detaching an efficient vessel to be at the Governor General's disposal would interfere with the public service. The 'Thames', which is not fit for a long voyage, would do for towing the 'Sonamookee' backwards and forwards. Her monthly expenses are a little over 1,000 Rupees, and each trip to Barrackpore and back will cost for fuel 75 Rupees. Copy of earlier letter, asking if the Governor General could have a steamer placed at his disposal without interference with the public service; and what would be the cost. See also 7560
7547. Aug 1860 Letter from Captain W White, Superintendent Government State Yacht Establishment, Calcutta. In reply, the repairs to the 'Sonamookee' are expected to be completed in a week. Copy of earlier letter. See also 7464, 7605
7548. Aug 1860 Letter from the Venerable Archdeacon Pratt, Calcutta. Sends a sketch map of the Cathedral, showing the best site for a monument to the memory of the late Mr Wilson.
7549. Aug - Sep 1860 Letter from Rundheer Singh, Rajah of Kuppoorthalla, Landour. States that though he is grateful for the rewards conferred on him, he feels not at ease at not enjoying the same powers in his new estates which his brother chiefs enjoy, and asks that if the Government should not be disposed to give him such powers in Oudh, he may be allowed to exchange his estate there with his old confiscated one; or with one in Jhujjur. Copy of reply, the Governor General will listen favourably to any recommendation made by the Lieutenant Governor in respect of the Rajah's restoration to his ancestral estates in Fatehabad, with sovereign powers. Private Secretary does not think that His Excellency would grant the Rajah wide powers in Oudh, such as he desires. See also 7597, 7666
