Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 7601 to 7650, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 77 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 7601 to 7700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 7601, 7604, 7606, 7608, 7609, 7610, 7611, 7614, 7616, 7617, 7627, 7629, 7630, 7636, 7637, 7639, 7643, and 7645 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

7602. Aug - Sep 1860 Letter from Mr W J Burnell, late of the Bengal Yeomanry Cavalry, Mahudpore Factory, Purneah. Asks for employment, sends copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, the Governor General regrets that he has no employment to offer.
7603. Aug - Sep 1860 Letter from Baboo Trilochun Roy, Calcutta. Sends a paper he has written on the goodness of the Deity; asks if he may use the Private Secretary's name as a reference.
7604. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr W Grey, Secretary to Government Home Department, Calcutta. Replies about Monsieur Camin, there seems to be no objection to his appointment as Emigrant Agent for the French Government, as his proceedings will be supervised by the British protectors of Emigrants. 7605. Sep 1860 Letter from Captain W White, Superintendent, State Yacht Establishment, Calcutta. Reports that the repairs of the 'Soonamookey' have been completed. At present there is no steamer available should the yacht be required at short notice, as the 'Thames' has been despatched to Kissengunge.
7606 Sep 1860 Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta. Submits the names of Lieutenant W J Stewart and Lieutenant Sir R St George for employment in the Bengal Revenue Survey and in the new Oudh Survey respectively. See also 5502

Asks for the Private Secretary's assistance in recovering the estate of his great-uncle, Mr Robert Holland, who died in India between the years 1811 and 1812. Letter no longer enclosed. 7610. Aug - Sep 1860 Letter from Pundit Ishree Purshad, Deputy Collector and Deputy Magistrate, Bhanderee. Asks to be allowed to present himself to the Governor General in order to learn if the Governor General would approve of a public address from the native princes and respectable inhabitants of Hindustan in favour of the Governor General's administration.
7611. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr J Remfry, Honorary Secretary, Calcutta (Dalhousie) Institute. Sends a letter to the Governor General containing a programme of lectures etc for the session beginning 1 Oct and reporting that the Institution's name is to be changed from 'Calcutta' to 'Dalhousie' as soon as the new site is settled. Copy of reply.
7612. Sep 1860 Letter from I Kramooddeen, Calcutta. Understanding that Government allows free passages to traders who want to do business in the Andamans, asks for a free passage for himself and 4 or 5 of his men. Endorsed: Transferred to Secretary to Government Home Department.
7613. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr D Templeton, Assistant Secretary, Central Committee District Charitable Society, Calcutta. Sends a copy of the Annual Report of the Society, and asks for a donation. Copy of reply, sending 100 Rupees. See also 5103

7624. Sep 1860 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel C Hinde, Bengal Army, Calcutta. Asks for Civil or Military employment; says he has been put to great expense by the late orders of Government, ordering him to China, and then ordering him back to Rewah, where he was placed at the disposal of the Commander in Chief and another officer.
7625. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr W S Halsey, Secretary to the Finance Commission, Calcutta. Wishes to know if the Governor General would consent to his exchanging posts with Mr Manderson or Lord Hay. In reply, says that none of the papers required by the Private Secretary has been printed; he will have copies made. A statement of the expenses of the Governor General's march in 1859/60 is being prepared. Copy of earlier letter.

7629. Aug - Sep 1860 Letter from the Honourable H B Devereux, Civil Service on leave, London. Understanding that if the Government of India should modify or withdraw its censure on him, the Secretary of State would cancel the order for Devereux's removal from the office of Judicial Commissioner of Mysore, states that he proposes to extend his leave.

7637. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Sends a cartoon received by him on 5 Sep, after the style of Punch, showing apparently another Mutiny. Had it been communicated to the Press, it would have been accepted as a convincing proof of disaffection and a panic would probably have followed.

7643. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr T H Kavanagh VC, Assistant Commissioner in Oudh, on leave, Calcutta. Sends a copy of a book just published by him, entitled 'How I won the Victoria Cross'. Copy of reply, thanking him for the book. Several passages of the book are criticised, as being misstatements of fact.
7644. Sep 1860 Letter from Mrs Isabella Johnson, Calcutta. Asks for employment for her husband either in the Commissariat Department or in the Calcutta Police. Copy of reply, application should be made to the heads of the Commissariat and Calcutta Police.
7645. Sep 1860 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel A Huyshe, Artillery Regiment, Meerut. Since his last letter, there has been no change in the feelings of the local Europeans; he has no doubt that discharge will be demanded by nearly all the men when amalgamation is announced. The men are unreasonable.
7646. Sep 1860 Letter from Captain E H D Macpherson, Aide de Camp to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, Alipore. Has just sent the Lieutenant Governor's answer to the Governor General. Major Plowden has gone to sea for a three weeks' trip.
7647. Sep 1860 Copy of a letter to the Proprietor of the 'Indian Field', Calcutta. Informing him that the Governor General's subscription has already been paid.
7648. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr F Cooper, Deputy Commissioner, Delhi. Asks that the Governor General obtain for him the aid of the Asiatic Society in Calcutta towards a Museum which he is endeavouring to establish in Delhi. Cover only.
7649. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr P S Melvill, Commissioner Trans Sutlej Division, Dhurumsala. Begs that Captain S Mainwaring's name may be brought to the notice of His Excellency for an appointment as 2nd Assistant to a Resident, or similar post.
7650. Sep 1860 Letter from Koomwar Kali Kishun Roy, Cossipore. Asks for an interview with the Private Secretary in order to ask for honours for himself for his contribution to native education, similar to the honours granted to his father and grandfather. Copy of reply, granting an interview.
