Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 7651 to 7700, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 77 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 7601 to 7700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 7657, 7659, 7661, 7665, 7666, 7670, 7671, 7672, 7673, 7682, 7865, 7686, 7687, 7689, 7690, 7692, 7694, 7695, 7696, and 7698 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

7653. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr J Cartland, Registrar, Ordnance Office, Calcutta. Recommends Mr T Stubbs, Head Overseer at Chatham Island, Port Blair, for the post of Superintendent of Barrackpore Park. See also 7674, 8110
7654. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr E G Chapman, merchant, Darjeeling. Complains that Major Maitland, Commanding Officer of the Darjeeling Depot has allowed a private soldier of the name of Crawford, Her Majesty's Regiment, to keep an open shop in the lines much to his injury. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply.
7655. Sep 1860 Letter from Gungadutt Jha Bhowanipore. Sends a petition from Jeonauth Jha, Bunsee Jha, and Sheik Kadir, asking for a remission of sentence of banishment to the Andaman Islands imposed for committing an affray with wounding in Zillah Tirhoot. Covering letter only.
7656. Sep 1860 Letter from Dr E B Brown, House Surgeon of the Medical College, Calcutta. Applies for the post of Chemical Examiner to the Punjab Government. Letter from Mr Aitchison. Copy of reply, no steps can be taken until a reply is received from the Secretary of State to an application for an officer.
7657. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr C Brown, Calcutta. In confirmation of his view of the state of the country, sends a letter from Mr Deverell, Manager of the Ackregunge concern, complaining that he is not allowed to sow indigo.
7658. Sep 1860 Copy of a letter to Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General Calcutta. Informing him that there was no difficulty in appointing Lieutenant Stewart and Lieutenant Sir de L St George to the Survey. The restriction has been withdrawn. See also 5502, 7606
7659. Sep 1860 Copy of a letter to Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Murree. Sending some comments by the Governor General on the Rifle Volunteer Circular. The Governor General is anxious to avoid a number of ephemeral corps being raised, which will collapse as soon as the drill becomes boring, and the uniforms no longer new.
7660. Sep 1860 Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Murree. Reports that Colonel Taylor of the Engineers, Superintendent of the Lahore and Peshawar Road, is expected in Calcutta next month on his return from sick leave in England.
7661. Sep 1860 Copy of a letter to Mr A Grote, Calcutta. Sending a letter from Cooper of Delhi. The Governor General will be very glad if the Asiatic Society can assist Cooper in his attempt to set up a museum at Delhi. Cooper set up a museum at Amritsar some years ago, which was very successful.
7662. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr A Blackley, Calcutta. Applies for the post of Superintendent of Barrackpore Park. Letter from Major Atkinson to Sir E Campbell. Copy of reply, his application will be considered.
7663. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr John Remfry, Honorary Secretary to the Calcutta (Dalhousie) Institute, Calcutta. Sends two corrected versions of the programme of the Institute. See also 7611
7664. Sep 1860 Letter from Major General Sir R J H Birch, Secretary to Government of India Military Department Calcutta. Asks whether the number of transport train carts furnished hitherto to the Private Secretary's Office when marching with the Governor General is really required, or whether a smaller number would suffice. 7666. Sep 1860 Letter from His Highness Maharajah Rundheer Sing of Kuppoorthulla, Landour. Returns thanks for the Private Secretary's letter of 1 Sep. He has no doubt that Sir R Montgomery will do what is necessary about Fatehabad; agrees with the Governor General about Oudh, and will do his best to carry out His Excellency's wishes.

7668. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr J Hills, indigo planter, Neechindepore. Forwards a set of rules by which he proposes to conduct his concerns, subject to suggestions by Government. Gives his views on the causes of the disturbances in the indigo districts. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply.
7669. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr C E H Webb, late Superintendent of the General Financial and Political Departments of the North West. Provinces Government Secretariat, Allahabad. Submits an appeal for justice, with regard to his summary dismissal. Covering letter only. Copy of reply, his Memorial has been transferred to the Home Department.
7670. Sep 1860 Letter from Captain C Chamberlain, District Superintendent Oudh Police, Simla. Sends an article which appeared in the Friend of India stating that he had furnished one of the Proprietors of the Oudh Gazette. with information of the alleged oppressions; denies the allegation. Regrets that his name is so frequently brought forward.
7671. Sep 1860. Letter from Colonel R Baird Smith, Mint Master, Calcutta. Returns thanks for the meteorological reports of the North West Provinces. Unless there is heavy and general rain in the North West Provinces within the next 12 or 14 days, the Khureef crops will almost, if not entirely, perish.
7672. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr A R Young, Officiating Secretary to Government Foreign Department, Calcutta. States that there has been no official report about the Nana; and that Mr Beadon's letter to Colonel Ramsay must have been founded on a private letter from Mr Bridgman of Goruckpore to Dr Payne.

In reply, says that as 3 pairs of horses will be required for the carriage to convey boxes to and from Barrackpore owing to the badness of the road, the charge will be at the rate of 250 Rupees per month. Will attend to the Private Secretary's instruction

Believes that no head is required for the Stud Establishment, and that each Deputy Superintendent should receive orders direct from Government. Would divide the Studs into two Divisions, North West and Central, the Kurnaul Remount Depot might be attached
7686. Sep 1860 Letter from Colonel R Baird Smith, Mint Master, Calcutta. Is glad to hear comforting news of the rains; but Major Brownlaw who was out in Camp in the Muzuffernuggur and Meerut Districts gives a sad picture of the distress out of reach of canal water.

Forwards a copy of a report made by him to the Lieutenant Governor North West Provinces on the loyal feeling of some of the most wealthy and respectable classes of Benares in respect of the Income Tax. 7691. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr H Kealy, Assistant Electric Telegraph Department, Ahmednuggur. Sends an appeal against his removal from the Electric Telegraph Department addressed to Mr Grey. Printed Copy of reply, his appeal will be disposed of in the Home Department.
7692. Sep 1860 Letter from Colonel A P Phayre, Commissioner of Pegu, Rangoon. Is collecting the required information about teak timber for the Admiralty, but in consequence of the absence of the Superintendent of Forests, Dr Brandis, the report cannot be sent at present. Captain Stanley was pleased with the prospect of a trip up-river.

7694. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr H Cope, Umritsur. Asks for tree seeds from the Barrackpore Park for the Umritsur nursery. Was obliged to delay the despatch of the silk cocoons on account of the heavy rains. Copy of reply, he may have the tree seeds, if he sends further details.
7695. Sep 1860 Letter from Colonel Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. Sends a memorandum by Major Aitken which shows the expenditure and receipts from the cultivation of 1 Beegah of opium, in 1818 and also at the present day. Has also obtained information from the Nawab of Jowrah.
7696. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr Colin J Mackenzie, Officiating Magistrate of Baraset. Asks to be allowed plants and shrubs from the Barrackpore Park for his station. Copy of reply, the Governor General has no objection.
7697. Sep 1860 Letter from Lieutenant C D J Dodd, Her Majesty's 8th Bombay Native Infantry, late Officiating Assistant Political Agent, Kutch, Bhooj in Kutch. Further to his application for political employment. See also 7488
7698. Sep 1860 Letter from Captain W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. Says that the cost of building the Agency house at Rewah will be much more than was expected; asks if he should submit a fresh estimate, or a supplementary estimate. The Rajah's foot is still very bad. Osborne hopes he will ask for Dr Abbott to attend him
7699. Sep 1860 Letter from Ensign P Dwyer, Her Majesty's 33rd Foot, Nynee Tal. Asks if he has any hope of employment if he passed the vernacular examination, and if he obtained the sanction of the Home Government, to his remaining in India on half-pay. Copy of reply, the Governor General can make no promise for so distant a date.
7700. Sep 1860 Letter from Mr E Carrington, Assistant to Mr C H Marks, Freight Broker, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Private Secretary to inquire about a petition sent by Sir C Wood to the Governor General at the desire of the distressed parents of Mr Samuel Carrington, who was sentenced to two years imprisonment for an assault on a native.
