Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 7701 to 7750, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 78 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 7701 to 7800’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 7704, 7705, 7709, 7711, 7713, 7714, 7715, 7718, 7725, 7730, 7731, 7733, 7736, 7737, 7741, 7742, 7743, 7744, 7749, and 7750 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

7705. Sep 1860 Letter from Captain C H Dickens, Officiating Secretary Public Works Department Calcutta. Asks if the Governor General wishes anything further to be done about invitations for natives to the opening of the Railway to Rajmahal, and sends a letter from Mr Palmer to Captain Beadle.
7706. Sep 1860 Letter from Captain F Tyrrell, Executive Engineer Berar Division, Camp, Oomrawuttee. Makes suggestions as to the necessity of making efficient arrangements for the future supply of timber in the forests of Berar, Baitool, Chunda etc. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his letter has been transferred to the Secretary to Government Public Works Department.

Hopes his earlier letter with enclosure has reached the Private Secretary; sends copy of his letter to Mr Grote asking for employment in the Income Tax Department citing the Private Secretary as a referee. 5 papers. Copy of reply, as the Private Secretary knows nothing of the Baboo's character, to cite the Private Secretary as a referee is highly impertinent.

Asks after the Private Secretary's health.7715 Sep - Oct 1860 Letter from Captain E H D Macpherson, Aide-de-Camp to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, AliporeSends a letter from Dr A Campbell, Superintendent of Darjeeling who believes that more force is necessary for the occupation of that part of Sikkim north of the Rumman, and proposes to apply for the services of the 73rd Native Infantry at Jelpigoree. Intends to go to the Rumman to await the result of his letter to the Sikkim Rajah about the middle of Oct and suggests Lieutenant Colonel Bishop, late 23rd Native Infantry to act for him. Has land settlement work to do in the ensuing cold weather. Copy of reply to Macpherson, as soon as an application is made by the Lieutenant Governor for the services of the 73rd Native Infantry, arrangements will be made with the Commander-in-Chief.

7718. Sep - Oct 1860 Letter from Captain W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. Asks if the Governor General intends to make a tour in the cold weather, and if so what route will be followed, as he would like to pay his respects before going to England. Intends to see the Maharajah in two days; fears that native-like he may object to pain, and allow his leg to be the cause of his death. Should His Highness die during Osborne's absence, asks to be recalled by telegraph, as he fears a serious disturbance. The Maharajah's uncle left a few days ago for Bundlecund. In continuation of his former letter, sends extract of a letter from the Senior Naval Officer at Singapore, communicating the approval of the Admiralty for Tireman's efforts in supplying coal to vessels conveying troops to China. 7730. Oct - Nov 1860 Letter from Colonel A P Phayre, Commissioner of Pegu, Henzada. As directed will take care over the chief appointment under the new Police system. Has reduced the Police a good deal since his return. There are prospects of a larger crop than usual in Pegu. Copy of earlier letter, asking him not to promise the chief Police appointment to any officer, as it is probable that the Governor General will send an officer out.
7731 Oct - Dec 1860 Letter from Mr A Panizzi, Principal Librarian, British Museum, London. Acknowledges letter of 1 Oct. Sends a letter for the Governor General (not enclosed). Copy of earlier letter, informing him that a collection of all the vernacular versions of the Royal Proclamation of 1858 has been sent to the British Museum. 7733. Sep - Oct 1860 Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Murree. Sends copies of letters, one from Major James and one from Captain Henderson, about the closing of the Kohat Pass. He is not sure what has caused the difference that led to the closure. Has written to James to assure himself that nothing has been done by the British that is unjust or harsh to the tribes. Hopes that in a few days the pass will be opened again and the matter settled. Acknowledges receipt of letter about Rifle Clubs; believes that Simla and Lahore are the only two places that can have Rifle Companies. See also 7665, 7750
7734. Sep - Oct 1860 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel L Barrow, Officiating Commissioner of Lucknow, Lucknow. In view of Colonel Abbott's return in a short time, hopes he will not be sent back to the grade of Deputy Commissioner. Copy of reply, his wishes will be borne in mind.
7736. Sep - Oct 1860 Letter from Captain R T Leigh, Junior Assistant Commissioner Arracan, Akyab. Asks for promotion, and sends a printed paper on the 'Jumeera Pat' (six copies). 7742. Oct 1860 Letter from Colonel G Balfour, President, Military Finance Commission, Calcutta. Reports that he is leaving for Burma. Believes the work will be well done in his absence.
7743. Sep - Oct 1860 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore. About appointments in the Agency. Was unable to attend the rejoicings at Gwalior over the birth of an heir to Sindia, but has promised to go over shortly. Hopes for a reply to his letter of 6 Aug about exchanges of territory before meeting Sindia. Copy of reply, about appointments. See also 7732
7744. Aug - Oct 1860 Letter from Sir Robert Hamilton, London. Returns thanks for the Private Secretary's letter. Regrets that the Governor General considers Hamilton discontented. Before he left India Lord Stanley had acknowledged his services up to Gwalior, he hoped for further recognition. Does not despise the KCB but would prefer to be made PC. The amalgamation question is settled, and the opposition in the House of Commons have done no good to the Indian Service. Has written two letters to the Governor General urging that something should be given to the troops who served at Gwalior. Remarks on Lord Elphinstone's death. Other news.
7745. Sep 1860 Letter from Letter from W Grey, Secretary to Government Home Department to W S Seton Karr, Officiating Secretary to Government of Bengal. Communicating the assent of the Governor General in Council to the proposal of the Lieutenant Governor about the issue of a general notification on the subject of indigo cultivation, informing the ryots that the Government is not opposed to the cultivation, but they are not required to cultivate except at their own free will. Both ryots and planters are warned against violence. The Supreme Government will assist the Lieutenant Governor in the multiplication of Sub-Divisions, and in providing better police, and more effective Civil Courts, and in making provision for registration. The Governor General wishes immediate steps taken to prepare the necessary drafts. Cover only.

7747. Oct 1860 Letter from Rajah Radhakaut Bahadoor, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General. Copy of reply, the Governor General has only come down from Barrackpore for one day; he hopes to give the Rajah an audience the following week. See also 7793, 7814
7748. Sep - Oct 1860 Letter from Mr H B Riddle, Director General of Post Offices. Suggests that the Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab nominate an officer as Post Master of the Punjab. Copy of reply, the Governor General has no objection.
7749. Sep - Oct 1860 Letter from Sir R Montgomery Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Murree. Has learnt from Captain Henderson that the Kohat affair has been settled, and that the pass was to be opened on 23 Sep. Expects to receive Captain James' official account of the affair shortly. Has never read a fairer report than that of the Indigo Commission. He regrets that Mr Temple weakened the majority by differing. See also 7733
7750. Sep - Oct 1860 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J Laughton, Engineers, Simla. Sends an old Memorandum which he had submitted to the Honourable Mr Thomason on the state and system of proper management of the Commissariat and Public Works Department; also two letters, one to the Military Board and the other to Mr Temple on the same subject. He has seen an article in the Mofussilite about the great excess of expenditure over estimate on the Lahore and Peshawar Road; asks that both the estimate and bill for the Delhi and Kurnaul Road may be shown to the Governor General from which it will be seen that a large work has been completed within the estimate.
