Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 7801 to 7850, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 79 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 7801 to 7900’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 7802, 7803, 7805, 7807, 7808, 7809, 7813, 7816, 7818, 7819, 7829, 7830, 7832, 7833, 7834, 7836, 7839, 7843, 7846, and 7848 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
7801. Oct 1860 Letter from Rajah Kali Krishna Bahadoor, Calcutta. Sends invitation cards for the approaching Doorga Pooja Festival. Wishes to present an invitation personally to the Governor General. one card enclosed. Copy of reply, returning thanks for the invitation, which the Governor General regretfully refuses. He has no time to grant an interview.
7802. Oct 1860 Letter from Mr Henry Berners, Attorney, Calcutta. Sends a Memorial (no longer enclosed) on behalf of the attorneys of Her Majesty's Supreme Court at Fort William, asking for the recognition of the same rights in the Courts of Non-Regulation Frovinces which they at present enjoy in the Courts of the Regulation Provinces by virtue of Act XX of 1853. Copy of reply, his Memorial has been forwarded to the Home Department.
7803. Sep - Oct 1860 Letter from Captain F R Pollock, President of the Local Committee of the Lawrence Asylum, Murree. Sends an appeal on behalf of the Asylum which he wishes the Private Secretary to circulate in Calcutta.
7804. Oct 1860 Letter from Mr W H McGowan, Officiating Post Master of Calcutta. In reply, about postage on a letter from the Commander-in-Chief in China to the Governor General. Copy of earlier letter about this.
7805. Oct 1860 Letter from Major General Sir R J H Birch, Secretary, to Government Military Department Calcutta. In reply, the pension granted to Mrs Willoughby, mother of Lieutenant Willoughby of the Delhi Magazine was £150 a year. The Tirwee prize question has been reported on by the Advocate General; and has now been referred to the Foreign Department. The report on the Cairo outrages has been held back as some of the officers are to be court-martialled. The report on the Tasmanian question awaits the replies of Captain Pond to certain doubts about his evidence.
7806. Oct 1860 Letter from Mr W S Halsey, Alipore. Returns thanks for the consideration shown him. Copy of earlier letter, Halsey is to be paid a total of 1,000 Rupees per month, until he is appointed to a post of which the pay is 1,000 Rupees.
7807. Oct 1860 Copy of a letter to Colonel G Balfour, Rangoon. Sending him a copy of a memorandum by Mr Drummond, the Accountant General, about reforms in the financial system, so that Balfour may give the Governor General his opinions on his return to Calcutta.
7808. Oct 1860 Letter from Mr W Grey, Secretary to Government Home Department Calcutta. In reply, Mr Temple has agreed to continue to superintend the examination of the native newspapers, and will send Grey extracts of interest for the Governor General. Copy of earlier letter asking for information.
7809. Oct 1860 Letter from Mr W Grey, Secretary to Government Home Department Calcutta. In reply, gives information about the site of the Dalhousie Institute. Copy of reply, asking for further information. See also 7831
7810. Oct 1860 Letter from Captain J Reddie, Master Attendant, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General. Copy of reply, if he wishes an interview further to the subject of his letters to His Excellency, will he please state his business in writing.
7811. Oct 1860 Letter from Captain R Ranken, 35th Madras Native Infantry Assistant General Superintendent Thuggee Department Jubbulpore. Applies for the post of Commissioner of the Department of Issue, about to be created. Copy of reply, acknowledgement, the Governor General is unable to make any promise.
7812. Oct 1860 Letter from Baboo Kashi Prasad Chuckerbutty, English and Urdu teacher in the Benares Government College, Benares. Asks for employment in the Private Secretary's Office during the Governor General's approaching tour of the Upper Provinces. Copy of reply, there is no vacancy.
7813. Oct 1860 Letter from Mr W Muir, Member of the Sudder Board of Revenue, North West Provinces. Gives estimates for the expected revenue from the Income Tax for Bareilly, Hirzapore, Benares, Eta, Mynpoorie, with comments. Sends a letter from Mr Roberts, Commissioner of Rohilcund, showing how the measure is working. The public has become reconciled to the tax, and if the forms were simplified, all would be well. Has heard that a Committee at Calcutta had proposed simplified forms, fears they will come too late. Endorsed: Govenor General to Sir C Wood 21 Oct 1860

7816. Oct 1860 Letter from Major C Browne, late Commissioner of Leia Division, on leave, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General in order to submit his case. Copy of reply, asking him to submit his business in writing.
7817. Oct 1860 Letter from Rajah Ram Chunder Sing, Calcutta. Asks for money. two letters. Copy of reply, request refused. See also 7854
7818. Oct 1860 Letter from Captain T E Bell, 2nd Madras European Light Infantry, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General to explain that the result of his official irregularities at Nagpore is quite fatal to his prospects, although the Governor General has taken a lenient view. Copy of reply, arranging interview.
7819. Oct 1860 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Asks if Golab Singh may be allowed to visit the Punjab for the purpose of marrying off his daughter; though the orders of Government forbid the residing of the Punjab Chiefs in the Punjab. 7828. Oct 1860 Letter from Mr J M Wolfe, Acting Manager of the Australian Hippodrome Calcutta. Invites the Governor General to a special performance, and sends a ticket to the Private Secretary. Covering letter only. Copy of reply, the Governor General refuses the invitation.

7832. Oct 1860 Letter from Mr A R Young, Deputy Secretary to Government Foreign Department Calcutta. States that there is no record in the Foreign Office of Colonel George Lawrence's rank of Brigadier General, but he was appointed by the Lieutenant Governor North West Provinces on 8 Jun 1859.
7833. Oct 1860 Letter from Major General Sir R J H Birch, Secretary to Government Military Department Calcutta. In reply, sends the papers about Mrs Willoughby (no longer enclosed) and states that £200 or £300 was proposed, but only £150 granted. 7837. Oct 1860 Letter from Captain H Mackenzie, 20th Bengal Native Infantry late Deputy Commissioner and Settlement Officer, Punjab, Bombay en route to Lahore. Has forfeited his Punjab appointment by his extension of leave; asks to be placed at the disposal of the Punjab Government, should Sir R Montgomery re-apply for his services. Copy of reply, should such an application be made, the Governor General will consider it.
7838. Oct 1860 Letter from Lieutenant W Phaire, Her Majesty's 54th Native Infantry, Junior Assistant to the Commissioner of Assam, Gowhatty. Applies for the post of Commissioner of Chota Nagpore, or any other post. Copy of reply, application refused.
7839. Oct 1860 Letter from Mr M F Crisp, Moulmein. Sends copies of his correspondence (six letters) with Captain Hopkinson showing want of consideration of the local authorities in the introduction of the Income Tax in the Tenasserim Provinces. Suggests the Commissioner be removed; recommends his own appointment as Officiating Commissioner. Observes that Mr Camaratta's letter in the 'Rangoon Times' shows that the King of Burma has abandoned the views of the French with which the Heir Apparent seemed to be infatuated. Believes that much of the repugnance to British Residents at the Court of Burma is due to the Residents having exacted the expenses of the Residencies from the Burman Court. Copy of reply, request for appointment refused.
7840. Oct 1860 Letter from Colonel G Balfour, President of the Military Finance Commission, Calcutta. Reports his return from Rangoon and sent a letter for the Governor General (no longer enclosed).
7841. Oct 1860 Letter from Captain W White, Superintendent State Yacht Establishment, Calcutta. Asks how many State Bholeahs will be required for the ensuing trip up river. Copy of reply, the Governor General suggests taking all the Bholeahs.
7842. Oct 1860 Copy of a letter to W E Forbes, Esquire, Artillery. Informing him of his appointment as Assistant Commissioner 3rd class in Oudh. See also 7795, 7796
7843. Oct 1860 Copy of a letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. To Mr C Beadon, Member of Council, believing that Major Dickens, Commissariat Officer, was the instigator of the charges against Ramdyal, asks for Dickens to be removed from Lucknow. Copy of reply by Private Secretary, Dickens is to be removed immediately from Oudh on departmental grounds.
7844. Oct 1860 Letter from Captain G A F Houchen, Officiating Superintendent of Hill Roads, Camp, Wangtoo. Will be quite satisfied with the appointment of Superintendent of Hill Roads on 300 Rupees Staff allowance. Will shortly begin a new branch road from Subathoo to join the Hindoostan and Thibet Road some 11 miles south of Simla. See also 7707
7845. Oct 1860 Letter from Shah Kubeeroodeen Ahmed, Sasseram. Asks for information about the Governor General's tour of the Upper Provinces. He has had a work on mutiny and rebellion prepared by an Urdu scholar, which he would like to present to the Governor General. Copy of reply, the Governor General will go to Benares by water in Nov, but no detailed plans have yet been made.
7846. Oct 1860 Letter from Mr H Sandeman, Treasurer, Calcutta Town Band. Asks the Governor General's support for a project to revive the Calcutta Town Band, and sends a circular. Copy of reply, the Governor General will subscribe 250 Rupees a year.
7848. Oct 1860 Letter from Captain W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. States that Lieutenant Acton will return in time, and as Lieutenant Snow is very anxious to get away, asks that Lieutenant P Ward, 25th Bengal Native Infantry, at present Officiating Adjutant, Nagode Police, may be allowed to officiate for Acton. Has been exchanging complimentary visit with the Maharajah, who is better, though will be unfit to walk about for two or three months. Copy of reply, Snow must remain until Acton returns.
7849. Oct 1860 Letter from Dr T Thompson, Superintendent Botanic Gardens. Wishes to go to England in March, and proposes Dr T Anderson, Assistant Surgeon Bengal Army, to act in his place. two letters. Copy of reply, when the time comes, the Governor General will write to the Lieutenant Governor about Anderson. See also 7887, 8416
