Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8001 to 8050, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 81 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8001 to 8100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8001, 8002, 8003, 8006, 8008, 8013, 8015, 8016, 8017, 8018, 8019, 8020, 8021, 8025, 8027, 8031, 8034, 8035, 8036, 8037, 8038, 8040, 8043, 8048, and 8049 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
8001. Nov 1860 Letter from Major A Robertson, Officiating Superintendent, Lahore and Peshawur Road, Camp, Attock. Consents to the publication of part of his note and sends further information, and a plan of a section of the River Indus. Copy of earlier letter. The Governor General has read Robertson's letter with great interest, and agrees to the proposal made therein. He wishes to know if Robertson has any objection to publication of part of his letter, and about the progress and prospects of the tunnel. Governor General's Book number 1768. See also 7660, 8086
8002. Nov 1860 Letter from Dr T Thomson, Superintendent, Botanic Garden, Calcutta. Suggests that Dr J L Stewart (who will probably act for Dr Jameson at Saharunpore) be allowed to spend some time in the Calcutta Botanic Garden before going to Saharunpore. Recommends that young botanists generally be allowed to study in the Botanic Garden. Copy of reply, as there is a great dearth of medical officers, His Excellency must refuse the request made on behalf of Stewart.
8003. Nov 1860 Letter from Major W F Eden, Officiating Agent to the Governor General for Rajpootana, Camp, near Oodeypore. Says he is sure the Governor General cannot fairly accuse him of unnecessary delay in sending the list of the native chiefs who are entitled to the privilege of adoption. The returns from Meywar, Jeypore, Joudpore, Bhurtpore and Ulwur have been submitted, and he will urge the preparation and submission of those from Bicaneer, Sirohee and Harowtee. Expects to meet General Lawrence at Oodeypore on 20 Nov.
8004. Nov 1860 Letter from Lieutenant C C Taylor, late 56th Bengal Native Infantry, Calcutta. Sends a letter from Lord Harris (no longer enclosed) and asks for employment in the Political or Commissariat Departments or any other Department. Copy of reply, application noted. 8005. Nov 1860 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Camp. Recommends Lieutenant I I Boswell, 69th Native Infantry as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Oudh; also asks about his earlier recommendation of Lieutenant De Montmorency. 8008. Nov 1860 Letter from Major F D Atkinson, Deputy Secretary to the Government of India Military Department, Calcutta. Sends copy of a letter from the officer commanding the Peshawur Division, stating that no application was received in 1857, 1858, or 1859 from any Deputy Commissioner in the Punjab for a guard of Europeans to protect Murree; with a return of the strength of Europeans at Murree, 1856-1860. 8010. Nov 1860 Copy of letter to Mr A R Young. Asking if he has enough parchment for writing the Khureetas on adoption; if not, it should be obtained, for it will be wanted at Benares or soon afterwards.

8014. Nov 1860 Letter from Major F J Wroughton, 6th Europeans, Dum Dum. Asks to be allowed to succeed Captain Osborne as Acting Political Agent at Rewah. Copy of reply, arrangements have already been made.
8015. Nov 1860 Letter from Major H D Abbott, Commanding 4th Hyderabad Cavalry, Aurungabad. Forwards a report by Dr Orr on the unhealthiness of Mulkapoor and suggests that if Jaulnah cannot be made available, a site near Dewulghaut south of Mulkapoor would be preferable. Quotes two of the Commissioners in Behar as being opposed to the proposal of placing the cantonment in the valley. Regrets that the Bombay troops have been moved up to Aurungabad so soon; for his force will have to turn out into the open, with more than 2,000 women and children, whilst the site of the new cantonment is undecided. 8016. Nov 1860 Letter from Mr F Cooper, Deputy Commissioner, Delhi. Returns thanks for books and records for the Museum from the Governor General. Expects the Income and License Taxes to bring in about 2.5 lacs. Explains his cipher system for Income Tax returns. The people have heard about the difficulty at Bombay, and get odd letters from various places declaring that the new taxes are to be abolished. See also 7909, 8018, 8019, 8020
8017. Nov 1860 Letter from Major R Meade, Political Agent, Gwalior. Reports the movements of Sir R Shakespear; Meade is to remain at Gwalior during Scindia's absence at Benares. Is prepared to start at a moment's notice should the Governor General wish to see him at Benares.

Containing with reference to the case of Unjore Tewarry, a statement by Mr W Fitzgerald of the maltreatment of two natives by the Police near the Chutter Munzil; also copies of testimonials of Mr Fitzgerald's good services during the Mutiny. 8024. Nov 1860 Letter from Mr E W Perry, Superintendent of Stationery, Calcutta. Has written to the Governor General directly, explains why he did not send the letter through the usual channel. Copy of reply. His papers have been forwarded to the Government Secretary to be officially dealt with.
8024a. Nov 1860 Letter from Kooldeess Singh, Zemindar of Tirhoot and Deputy Magistrate and Deputy Collector of Sarun, Chuprah. Asks to be allowed to attend the Durbar at Patna.
8025. Nov 1860 Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner of the Cis-Sutlej States, Umballa. Hopes that orders will soon come about Oomeid Sing. The Income Tax act is working well. The Sirdars entrusted with powers in the States are working well, with comments. Believes this system might be extended. Mr Edmonstone has begun to give famine relief very early. Barnes expects to collect half the Khureef or autumn crop; but may not get more than two fifths. Asks if the Governor General will go to Simla that year. See also 7947

8034. Nov - Dec 1860 Letter from Mr W Edwards, Civil and Sessions Judge of Benares. Sends the deposition of Myder Singh Chuttree, a proclaimed rebel leader, who surrendered on 27 Nov, containing a confirmation of the Nana's death, which, if the Friend of India is to be believed, is again a matter of doubt.
8035. Nov - Dec 1860 Letter from Mr Charles Currie, Officiating Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Sends a letter correcting the statement previously made about the way in which Mr Norris obtained a copy of Colonel Barrow's letter and the suppression of the last sentence.

Sends a confidential correspondence between Sir Sydney Cotton and Captain James about Income Tax returns. Has seen of late some uneasiness on the General's part towards James, and thinks that Sir Sydney aims at complete political control at Peshawar. Copies of two letters enclosed. 8038. Dec 1860 Letter from Mr H Hoppner, German Missionary, Ghazeepore. Sends a copy of an appeal for a Mission Church at Ghazeepore. Refers to the Governor General's kindness in 1858 at Allahabad in restoring to his Mission land. Copy of reply, request refused, as there is already a church at Ghazeepore sufficient for the needs of the community.

8043. Nov - Dec 1860 Letter from Rajah Run Dheer Singh, Camp, Ekowna, Oudh. Wishes to ask his friends among the chiefs to send an application to the Queen to allow the Governor General to remain another 5 years in India; asks for advice. Wishes to meet the Governor General. Copy of reply, thanking him for his letter. However gratifying his request might be to the Governor General Private Secretary should not advise making it, because it is not likely that His Excellency would, after undergoing 5 years of unexampled labour and anxiety, remain longer in India than necessary after the expiry of his term of office. The Governor General would be glad to see the Rajah, but leaves Benares very shortly.
