Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8051 to 8100, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 81 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8001 to 8100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8052, 8053, 8054, 8055, 8056, 8058, 8059, 8060, 8061, 8062, 8066, 8067, 8069, 8072, 8073, 8074, 8075, 8077, 8078, 8079, 8080, 8081, 8085, 8087, 8089, 8092, 8093, and 8097 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
8051. Oct - Dec 1860 Letter from Major W W H Greathed, Extra Aide de Camp to Major General Sir R Napier, Commanding the 2nd Division of the Forces in China, Tientsin. Asks if his application for furlough to England has been granted. Refers to the happy result of proceedings in China, and looks upon the clause making Tientsin an open post as the chief safeguard of the whole business in hand. Note to Birch; Birch's reply, furlough granted.
8052. Dec 1860 Letter from Mr C Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Sends a demi-official letter from Colonel Barrow explaining his letter to Colonel Abbot about seditious talk regarding the Income Tax, with comments. See also 8000, 8055
8053. Dec 1860 Letter from Mr F Cooper, Deputy Commissioner, Delhi. Says that the compensation for houses demolished for the military clearances is nearly at a standstill because of the claim of the Nawab Vuzeer of Oudh and one Uneesoodowlah for some 7 or 8 lacs worth of property. Hopes that the claims will be ignored by the Supreme Government, and asks for a decision.
8054. Dec 1860 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Gives details of his movements. Will forward Fitzgerald's deposition with his own opinion, that it is false. Fitzgerald is a man of infamous character. Two other supposed witnesses of cases of oppression have refused to give evidence on oath. See also 8021, 8036
8055. Dec 1860 Letter from Mr FitzEdward Hall, Inspector of Schools, Saugor Division, Saugor. Asks what social rank he is entitled to in India as a Doctor of Civil Law of Oxford. Copy of reply, there is no comparative scale of rank for university degrees.
8056. Dec 1860 Letter from Mr C U Aitcheson, Under Secretary to Government Foreign Department, with the Governor General, on the Ganges off Benares. Sends a copy of a Telegraph Message from Mr Grey, reporting that the President in Council has accepted Colonel Macqueen's resignation of the Judicial Commissionership of Mysore, and that General Cubbon asks for the early appointment of a successor. 8057. Dec 1860 Letter from Mr C U Aitcheson, Under Secretary to Government Foreign Department with the Governor General Camp, Benares. Forwards a reply from Major General Birch, stating that the Military Department has no knowledge of Lieutenant Boswell's return to India. See also 8005, 8267, 8278
8058. Dec 1860 Letter from Mr W Grey, Secretary to Government of India Home Department, Calcutta. In reply, sends Sir B Peacock's reply made in the Legislative Council to the petition of the Christian Inhabitants of Calcutta, about the Penal Code. Printed. 8059. Dec 1860 Letter from Captain E Smyth, 22nd Punjab Infantry, Almorah. Asks that if the subject of an expedition to explore Chinese Tartary be again discussed, a passport from the Court of Pekin may be suggested. Also copy of this letter. See also 7033, 7052, 7494, 8568
8060. Dec 1860 Letter from Dr J C Collins, Civil Assistant Surgeon, Darjeeling. Further to his request for permission to continue in Darjeeling for three years more, sends correspondence. The people of Darjeeling are in a state of alarm, expecting an attack from Sikkim. Dr Campbell has been attacked, and is entrenched at Sikkim, about 50 miles from Darjeeling. A small detachment under Major Maitland has gone to assist him. More troops will be required. Three more companies of the 73rd have been sent for from Jelpigoree. Some sepoys have been killed at outposts. Copy of reply, his application will be considered officially.
8061. Dec 1860 Letter from Major W C Erskine, Commissioner, Jubbulpore, Camp. Asks for information about the Governor General's visit to Jubbulpore. Copy of reply about this. See also 8156
8062. Dec 1860 Letter from Captain W N Lees, Secretary to the Board of Examiners, Calcutta. Asks for printed copies of the Governor General's speeches as they appear. The political effect of the Governor General's tours will be immense, though His Excellency must not expect people in Calcutta to realise this, as they do not sufficiently understand native character.
8063. Dec 1860 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Benares. Suggests that Major McMullin be appointed 1st Assistant to the Agent, and Lieutenant P Bannerman 2nd Assistant and Lieutenant R H De Montmorency Officiating 2nd Assistant. See also 8005, 8168
8064. Dec 1860 Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta. Has sent all his maps of Sikkim and neighbourhood. All the vacancies in the Survey Department have been filled, and he has no place for Lieutenant Armstrong. Copy of earlier letter about Armstrong. 8066. Nov - Dec 1860 Letter from Major A L McMullin, 1st Assistant Governor General's Agent for Central India, Bhopal. Says that the Secundra Begum wishes to be allowed to pay her respects to the Governor General; if there is any objection to her sex, will depute her nobles. 8072. Dec 1860 Letter from Mr St George Tucker, Commissioner Fyzabad Division, Sultanpore. Has appealed to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh for permission to reside for one hot weather at Sultanpore, visiting Roy Bareilly and Pertabghur once a month; would prefer to be transferred to another division. Copy of reply, the question is one for the local Government.
8073. Dec 1860 Letter from Mr W Fitzgerald, Lucknow. Sends a Memorial of his services during the Siege of Lucknow, and asks for employment. Copy of reply, request refused. He has already lost two posts under Government.

8075. Dec 1860 - Jan 1861 Letter from Lieutenant General Sir M Cubbon, Commissioner of Mysore, Nundydroog. In reply, knows of no officer who has a claim for appointment to the Mysore Commission; but has previously submitted an application for one Junior Assistant in place of Captain Martin. Partial failure of rains has led to a smaller harvest than he hoped. Copy of earlier letter about the vacancy in the Commission. See also 8184

8080. Dec 1860 Letter from Mr W Grey, Secretary to Government of India Home Department, Calcutta. Sends information about Mr Spooner's plans on the presentation of a petition praying for certain information about financial matters, including the rumoured grant to the Mysore family, a debate ensued in the Legislative Council. Sir B Frere replied that whatever had been done had been ordered by the Secretary of State who was responsible to Parliament, and that he did not consider the Council the proper place in which to ask for the information. Sir E Peacock contended that the subject was one which the Council might legitimately handle, when they had been recently called upon to tax the people, and added that he doubted whether the Council should consent to pass the License Bill until full information about the alleged grant was given. As far as he could judge from the Treaty of 1799, the present members of the Mysore family did not seem to have any claims to a grant. Grey has not yet received the result of Mr Wauchope's inquiries about the European population of Calcutta; will send shortly a paper on the Civil Service. There is no fresh news from Darjeeling. The Arracan steamer which has returned to Calcutta from China may be made available to bring the new Governor of Madras up to Calcutta. Copy of earlier letter, asking Grey to order the captain of the 'Feroze' to call at Madras for orders as soon as Lord Elgin dismisses her. 8093. Dec 1860 Letter from Mr R H Davies, Secretary to the Punjab Government, Lahore. Understanding that the Home Government intends to strike off from the Army List the 4th and 5th Regiments of Bengal European Cavalry, and to draft the men into the remaining regiments. Observes that it is supposed that this cannot legally be done, and the men may insist on their discharge. Sir R Montgomery is on his way to Lahore. The Income Tax collections are going well. Note from General Birch, men can be transferred from one regiment to another at will inside the same wing of the Army.
