Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8151 to 8200, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 82 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8101 to 8200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8152, 8156, 8159, 8161, 8162, 8163, 8164, 8166, 8173, 8174, 8178, 8179, 8181, 8183, 8187, 8188, 8191, 8192, 8195, 8196, 8197, 8198, and 8199 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

8152. Dec 1860 - Jan 1861 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Camp. Reports that two suttees have taken place in Bundlecund, and suggests this might be mentioned by His Excellency to the young Thakoor of Bijawur. Copy of reply, about this and other matters.
8153. Dec 1860 - Jan 1861 Letter from Captain J J Hamilton, late 2nd Bengal Grenadiers, Assistant Commissioner 1st class in charge of West Berar, Camp, Bullapore. States his services, and asks to be allowed to remain in the Hyderabad Commission, or for other Staff employment in India. Copy of reply, the Governor General is aware of his claims to consideration. Asks for information about the probable expenditure in the Private Secretary's Department during the Governor General's Tour. 8159. Dec 1860 - Jan 1861 Letter from Sir R Napier, Engineers, Madras. Reports his arrival at Madras, where it is rumoured he is to succeed the Commander in Chief and asks for information about his future employment in India. He expects the possession of Tien Sing will prevent the Chinese from returning to their usual tactics about treaties. Telegraph Messages Sent Number 869
8160. Dec 1860 - Jan 1861 Letter from Lieutenant R Stewart, Superintendent of Cachar. Asks for promotion to Commissioner in some non-regulation Province. Sends copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, the Governor General is aware of his good service and will bear his request in mind; at present there are many good candidates and few vacancies. 8161. Dec 1860 - Jan 1861 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Camp. Mr King has sent a Memorandum on the distribution of the Lucknow medals, which he hopes will suffice. The Baileegard people are so sensitive that it is impossible to avoid offending them; it never occurred to anybody that a public distribution of the medals was expected. Copy of earlier letter asking for information. See also 8187
8162. Jan 1861 Letter from Dr W H Hayes, Assistant Surgeon, Chyebassa. In reply, accepts gratefully the post of Deputy Superintendent of Port Blair, has replied officially. Copy of earlier letter offering him the post, combined with the Medical Charge of the convicts. See also 8122, 8367
8163. Jan 1861 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Camp. Reports that the Camp will be delayed for Holkar, and cannot be at Jubbulpore before 11 Jan. The Secundra Begum will be there on 8 Jan. In signalling McMullin, Shakespear told him the plan of granting Bairseeah to the Secundra Begum; McMullin has kept the information from the Begum as he wishes it to be a surprise to all. Asks for the Governor General's instructions on this point. There are two most objectionable people with McMullin's Camp, the father of the Nana, and a lady who calls herself Yarsoda Bhai, wife of Bajee Rao Peishwa. They are expected to claim all the Nana's property at Jubbulpore. McMullin has been told to insist on these two not entering Jubbulpore under the protection of any native chief under the Central India Agency. Endorsed: Governor General to Mr Beadon 7 Jan 1861. 8166. Jan 1861 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Camp. Sends a letter from Major McMullin, 1st Assistant to the Agent, reporting that the Secundra Begum still refuses to give the salute to Holkar except as a favour. Holkar will not accept the salute, save as a right. Suggests arrangements for the Sirdars of the Begum and of Holkar at the Durbar. Holkar will dislike seeing Berseah handed over to the Begum, but her services to the British in the Mutinies were much more valuable (services outlined). The old Koodsea Begum and the Shajehan Begum are to accompany Secundra Begum. Shakespear comments that McMullin is entirely wrong about the arrangement for the Durbar, and that the coming of the Begums is bewildering. Suggests that McMullin should come out two or three stages from Jubbulpore. See also 8129, 8146, 8179
8167. Dec 1860 Letter from Jumna Doss Mohajun, Benares. Asks for the release of his bookkeeper, Mookhun Doss, imprisoned by the Governor General's Camp Police Darogah. Copy of reply, Private Secretary has nothing to do with arrangements in the Sudder Bazar; the writer should apply to the Camp Magistrate, Captain Pester.

8174. Jan 1861 Letter from Mr W Seton Karr, Officiating Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Sends a copy of a letter from the Commissioner of Rajshahye and copy of a letter from the Officiating Magistrate of Pubna, about the difficulties of planters, and the measures taken. Also gives the substance of the report agreed to at a conference of Magistrates, which the Lieutenant Governor considers very satisfactory. See also 8105

8179. Jan 1861 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Camp. Sends a letter from Major McMullin, 1st Assistant to the Agent, reporting that the Secunder Begum begs to be allowed a separate Durbar, as she does not wish to meet Holkar. She claims precedence over Holkar. In territory Holkar has the advantage, and the revenues of their states are about equal; but the Begum's ancestors were rulers of Bhopal long before Mohajee Rao Sindia and Tokajee Holkar were Soobahs of the Peshwa. The Begum wishes to come out to meet the Governor General when he arrives at Jubbulpoor. Has tried to dissuade the Koodsea Begum from joining the Camp, but in vain; she is very bad-tempered. 8187. Jan 1861 Letter from Mr R M King, Assistant Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. In reply, sends a Memorandum on the distribution of the Lucknow Medals. See also 8161
8188. Jan 1861 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Camp. Sends a reply from Major McMullin about the man calling himself the Peishwa, and the woman styled Yarsooda Bae, wife of Bajee Rao Peishwa, who are with Holkar's Camp. Holkar when appealed to at Mohysir, referred these two to the Political authority, and subsequently ordered them out of the Serai at Indore. Sends a translation of the Akbar newspaper in which the order at Mohysir is referred to. If the matter is pressed further, the only result will be to ruin Holkar's two officers in charge of his Camp, who both did good service during the Mutiny. Copy of reply, no further notice need be taken of the man and woman referred to above. See also 8163

Sends a letter from the Commissioner of Mysore, asking for Lieutenant W Hill, Officiating Junior Assistant in the Commission, to be confirmed in his post. There are 8 Junior Assistants in the Commission, and 3 vacancies. See also 8184, 8226
8190. Jan 1861 Letter from Colonel C Davidson, Resident at Hyderabad. Suggests Dr Fleming, Superintendent of Jails in the Assigned Territories to act for Dr Smith, the Hyderabad Residency Surgeon. Copy of reply, the Governor General agrees to the arrangement.
8191. Jan 1861 Letter from Mr R Temple, President of the Civil Finance Commission, Calcutta. Has sent a copy of the Burma Report. Mr Laing is expected at Calcutta. The two Financial Commissioners have much difficulty in getting measures actually carried out by the authorities concerned. Copy of reply, the Governor General will write to Temple. 8200. Jan 1861 Letter from Captain E S Denniss, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Lahore. States that there are two vacancies in the Punjab, for which the Lieutenant Governor would like young men of not more than 5 years standing. Note by Mr Aitcheson.
