Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8201 to 8250, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 83 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8201 to 8300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8201, 8204, 8205, 8206, 8207, 8208, 8209, 8210, 8212, 8214, 8215, 8216, 8217, 8218, 8219, 8221, 8222, 8223, 8227, 8229, 8231, 8237, 8238, 8244, 8246, 8248, and 8249 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

8204. Jan 1861 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Camp, Jubbulpore. Reports that he has insisted Holkar must come into Jubbulpore at once, and not spend a night in Camp outside.
8205. Jan 1861 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Camp, Jubbulpore. Reports the arrival of Holkar; His Highness has sent to the Private Secretary to inquire after the Governor General's health, suggests a return deputation to inquire after Holkar's health. Asks if he may fix Monday for Holkar's Durbar, and Tuesday for the Begums'.
8206. Jan 1861 Letter from Major W C Erskine, Commissioner of Jubbulpore. Sends a Memorandum of some of his reasons for thinking that all the British Districts in Central India should be placed under a Chief Commissioner. The Lieutenant Governor and Mr Muir both approve of such a union, and various Governor Generals and former Commissioners deprecate these Districts being under the Government and courts of the North West Provinces. The abolition of the Thuggee Department would help defray any extra charge, he can see no further need for such a Department. Three papers. See also 8218, 8219, 8183
8207. Jan 1861 Letter from Rai Krishan Rao, late Moonsiff of Dumoh, Jubbulpore. Sends two books for the Queen, a pair of silver sticks, and copies of testimonials of his services during the Mutinies for which he has been amply rewarded by Government. Covering letter only. Copy of reply, the books will be sent to the Secretary of State. The Governor General does not usually accept gifts for the Queen, so the silver sticks are returned. See also 8213, 8448
8208. Jan 1861 Letter from Mr J Prichard, Editor, Delhi Gazette, Agra. With reference to the meeting at Agra about relief, says that his resolution against the system of issuing cooked food from Government store houses was rejected, but as such a plan is likely to revive the panic about caste, the attention of the Governor General should be drawn to it. Sends a paragraph (printed) which he omitted from his account of the meeting in the Delhi Gazette, at the request of Mr Phillipps. Copy of reply, the Governor General's attention had already been drawn to this question.

8212. Dec 1860 - Jan 1861 Letter from Mr R H Davis, Secretary to Government of the Punjab, Lahore. With reference to Captain de Montmorency's letter of 19 Dec about the alleged preparations of Feroze Shah, owing to the reports of the peculiar temperament of de Montmorency, the Lieutenant Governor does not attach much importance to the information. 8215. Jan 1861 Letter from Mr W Grey, Secretary to Government Home Department, Calcutta. Has telegraphed that Mr Laing has arrived and taken his seat in Council.
8216. Jan 1861 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Camp. Sends a note from Major Meade (no longer enclosed), so that the Governor General can see that Colonel Beatson is trying for the Gwalior Command, if he succeeds there will be much annoyance; and also Major Meade will remain where he is, which is a matter for congratulation. Shakespear will arrange about the Jhansi boundary. Endorsed: note for reply by Lord Canning. He is glad Meade is not going; Shakespear need not fear that Beatson will be appointed.

8223. Jan 1861 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Camp. Sends notes on people who are to attend the Durbar on 15 Jan, viz: the Secunder Begum, Koodsea Begum, Nawab Mean Foujdar Mahomed Khan, Jumaloodeen Khan (1st Minister) and Rajah Kishen Ram (2nd Minister). Also a separate note about a Roman Catholic lady, Beebee Sahiba, who is said to be the descendant of a Bourbon prince who left Europe in 1445 AD and found favour at the court of the great Akbar, King of Hindustan; the Secunder Begum wishes to introduce Beebee Sahiba to the Governor General in order that she may accompany the Begums on a visit to Lady Canning. That the Governor General witness an exhibition of horsemanship. 2. That the Governor General accept a dinner party, illumination and fireworks. 3. That the Governor General consent to his band playing. 4. That the Governor General grant him a private interview, and allow him to pay his compliments to Lady Canning. 5. 8243. Jan 1861 Letter from Lieutenant C K M Walter, Assistant Agent to the Governor General on special duty, Camp, Eradutnuggur via Agra. Asks to be appointed Officiating Political Agent at Bhurtpore in place of Major Bouverie. Copy of reply, his application will be considered in the event of a vacancy.
8244. Jan 1861 Letter from Major G W Boileau, District Superintendent of the Oudh Military Police, Seetapore. Asks if Government intended to send a separate acknowledgement of services to all officers favourably noticed in the Governor General 's Despatch on the Mutinies. He has received no letter from the Secretary of State, unlike all others mentioned in the Despatch. Copy of reply, the omission seems to have been accidental; he should apply to the Secretary of State.

8246. Jan 1861 Letter from Colonel Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Camp, Jubbulpore. Reports a conversation with Holkar about the Contingent; Shakespear had refused to discuss the question at short notice. Wishes to know the Governor General's opinion. Sends copy of a note to Holkar. Endorsed: note for reply by Lord Canning. Copy of reply, the Governor General declines to enter upon any discussion of this nature, either personally or while he is at Jubbulpore. The proper channel for such questions is the Governor General's Agent. Holkar has been granted another interview as a matter of courtesy, but the question of the Contingent is not to be discussed during the interview. See also 8248
