Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8251 to 8300, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 83 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8201 to 8300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8253, 8254, 8255, 8256, 8257, 8258, 8261, 8262, 8263, 8265, 8268, 8271, 8277, 8284, 8285, 8286, 8287, 8290, 8292, 8294, 8296, 8297, and 8298 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
8251. Jan 1861 Letter from Sir Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy, Bart, Bombay. Has just returned from England, was much gratified by his reception there. Would be pleased to see the Private Secretary in Bombay. Endorsed: answered privately.
8252. Jan 1861 Letter from Mr J Silver, Magistrate and Collector, Tinnevelly. Applies for the post of either Commissioner or Judicial Commissioner of Mysore. Endorsed: note for reply by Lord Canning. Copy of reply, the Governor General regrets he cannot hold out any hope of Silver being appointed.
8253. Jan - Feb 1861 Letter from Mr A Ross, Commissioner, Agra. Acknowledges receipt of 1,000 Rupees, being the Governor General's subscription to the Fund for famine relief in Agra Division. Copy of earlier letter, sending subscription.
8254. Jan - Feb 1861 Letter from Mr E L Brandreth, Commissioner of Delhi. Thanks the Governor General for his donation to the relief fund. Hitherto private relief has been expended on those unable to work; Government relief has only been given in lieu of some kind of labour. There have been very slight falls of rain. Copy of earlier letter, sending 1,000 Rupees for famine relief in the Division.
8255. Jan - Feb 1861 Letter from Mr F Williams, Commissioner of Meerut, Camp, Muzaffernaugur. Acknowledges receipt of 1,000 Rupees, the Governor General's donation for famine relief. Reports a slight fall of rain in the Division. Copy of earlier letter, sending donation.
8256. Jan 1861 Letter from Major W C Erskine, Commissioner of Jubbulpore. Sends a copy of his Manual for village surveyors, now used in the Jubbulpore Division, Madras and Hyderabad. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement.
8257. Jan 1861 Letter from Colonel Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Camp, Jubbulpore. Reports a conversation with the Punnah Rajah; in addition to the seven Saugor villages, the Rajah has one in Dumoh, one in Huttah, and several in Meriahdo, so that to get rid of all his possessions within Major Erskine's limits will be more complicated than was anticipated. Asks for an interview with the Governor General to explain the following proposals: 1. Grant as a reward to the Rajah of lands yielding 8,700 Rupees a year. 2. Transfer to Government of every village held within the Jubbulpore Commission by the Rajah. 3. Transfer to the Rajah of all villages belonging to Government in Simureeah. An arrangement could also be made about the Banda villages which extend into Punnah Territory near Kalinjur, and Punnah villages which run into Burringpore. See also 8262
8258. Jan 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Bruce, Secretary, Police Commission, Ballygunge, Calcutta. Has sent a map of Pegu showing the present and proposed military strength, and suggests it be put into the Burma Report now before the Governor General.
8259. Jan 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Vetch, Deputy Commissioner of Assam, on circuit duty. Complains of supercession and has asked the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal for permission to resign. Copy of reply, the Governor General regrets that Vetch has to suffer owing to Colonel Jenkins' removal. See also 7619

8261. Jan 1861 Letter from Major E K Elliot, Commissioner of Nagpore, Camp, Jubbulpore. Returns Sir G Clerk's letter (no longer enclosed) and will write to the Foreign Department on the subject. Believes there will be no difficulty in continuing the late Rajah's possessions in Western India to the family, Janojee taking the management during the lifetime of the widows. 8262. Jan 1861 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Camp, Jubbulpore. Reports that he has explained his proposals about Punnah to Mr Young, and will not now need to trouble the Governor General. Shakespear wishes to bring Holkar up himself to the interview, to ensure punctuality. See also 8257

8264. Jan 1861 Copy of a reply to the Very Reverend Father Lewis, Agra. Sending a note by Sir R Birch in reply to an application made by Bishop Persico. See also 7420, 7423
8265. Jan 1861 Letter from Major W C Erskine, Commissioner of Jubbulpore. Sends papers about village courts on the model of those established at Jaloun, and suggests they might be given a further trial. Four papers, also covering letter, and memorandum. Copy of reply, returning original papers, of which copies have been made. Private Secretary agrees the scheme would be worth extending; it is in accordance with recent ideas of securing the co-operation of influential natives in the system of Government.
8266. Jan 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Sir E F Campbell, Military Secretary to the Governor General, Camp, Ghosulpore. Sends three applications from Mr J G N Hennessey, Sir A Waugh, and Major J T Walker, all officers in the Survey Department (Not enclosed). 8269. Jan 1861 Letter from Colonel C Davidson, Resident at Hyderabad. Sends with his recommendation a letter from Mr L Ricketts who has lost his appointment by the restoration of the Raichore Doab to the Nizam, asking for employment in the Nagpore or Mysore Commissions. 8270. Jan 1861 Letter from Rai Ajoodhia Pershad Bahadoor, Extra Assistant Commissioner, Zillah Mohundee, Lukheempore. Returns thanks for the honorary title conferred on him by Government, and renews his request for a grant of land. Copy of reply, recommendations for grants of land must come from the local Government.
8271. Jan 1861 Letter from Mr J T Prichard, Editor, Delhi Gazette, Agra. Sends in confidence a letter from 'Kirza' showing what is still going on in Oudh in connection with the libel case. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, the letter has been shown to the Governor General. The Private Secretary does not know who the writer is.

8274. Jan 1861 Letter from Kamdar of His Highness the Nawab of Jowrah. States that he had intended to visit the Private Secretary at Jubbulpore but was prevented by illness; asks when the Camp breaks up at Jubbulpore, and where it will go to. Copy of reply, giving the Governor General's movements.
8275. Jan 1861 Letter from Captain T G Montgomerie, Engineers, 1st Assistant, Great Trigonometrical Survey, Dehra Dhoon. Writes further to his application for the post to be vacated by Colonel Waugh. Copy of reply, nothing can be added to earlier reply. See also 8225, 8277

8285. Jan 1861 Letter from Mr C R Coles, Officiating Political Agent, Rewah, Camp, Kylwarah. Returns thanks for a letter about the Governor General's movements. The Rewah Rajah is anxious for another interview with the Governor General. Suggests that the Rajah of Nagode be granted an interview for good behaviour during the Mutiny. Will have the carriages at Rewah. Has heard that there was a tiger near Sleemanabad. Copy of reply, the Governor General will see the Rajah of Nagode at Myhere, but will not have time to see the Rewah Rajah.
8286. Jan 1861 Letter from Mr F St C Williams, Extra Assistant Commissioner, Oudh, Lucknow. Asks that if the Governor General considers he has satisfactorily cleared himself from charges against him, he may be appointed to do duty in Lucknow. 1/2 anna stamp. 8287. Jan 1861 Letter from Major H D Abbott, Commanding 4th Hyderabad Cavalry, Camp, Luckenwarra. Says that Yelgoam has at last been decided upon as the site for the new Cantonment, and all are delighted at having got out of the valley. The water in the Berar Valley is very brackish, and at a very short distance from Akola there are extensive salt manufactories; this added to the babul tree jungle which covers the entire valley, makes the place most unhealthy. The line of the railway passes by Mulleapoor and Akola on to Domraotee; not much progress is being made, as Mr Lee the contractor has difficulty in obtaining coolies. Asks when the amalgamation is to come into effect. See also 8127

8290. Jan 1861 Letter from Mr F Cooper, Deputy Commissioner, Delhi. Reports a shower of rain, but no more rain. Believes that if the Punjab line of railway could be commenced at Delhi, it would be a great advantage, and provide relief works. Otherwise the Imperial revenue is likely to be imperilled from shortage of cultivators. Telegraph Message Sent Number 881
8291. Jan 1861 Letter from Mr Henry Gibson, Adjutant, Military Police, Baitool. Having lost his appointment owing to the new organisation, asks for another appointment. Copy of reply, application noted.
8292. Jan 1861 Letter from General Sir Hugh Rose, Commander in Chief of India, Delhi. Returns thanks for the copy of the Governor General's despatch to Sir C Wood about the transfer of Jhansi to Scindia. Reports that the great fair, 30 miles east of Almorah, has been a failure owing to the poverty of the Chinese merchant, who always spent a lac of Rupees there before the Chinese war.
8293. Jan 1861 Letter from Major General Sir J B Hearsey, Commanding Presidency Division, Fort William. Forwards an application from his son Captain J Hearsey for the 2nd in Command of the Bhopal Levy. Copy of reply, application noted, no vacancy at present.
8294. Jan 1861 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Camp, Pertabghur. Asks to be allowed to make Debee Pershad, at present Commandant of Oudh Police, an Extra Assistant Commissioner. This man was the writer of Colonel Barrow's letter to the Nawab of Furruckabad, but his character on inquiry was exonerated from all blame in the matter. He and his brother did good service during the Mutiny. He will lose his present appointment because of Wingfield's reductions of the Police. Copy of reply, the Governor General sees no objection.
8295. Jan 1861 Letter from Lieutenant T Acton, 2nd Assistant Political Agent, Rewah, Bijeraghogurh. Believing that the Indian Staff Corps is almost certain to be formed, asks if he will be recommended for promotion on it as Major. Regrets having again missed seeing the Private Secretary particularly as such an unpleasant affair is the cause of it; the case is serious, and the Tehseeldar a great favourite. Copy of reply, the Staff Corps scheme has not taken any definite shape: recommendations would be made by the Commander in Chief.
8296. Jan 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Bruce, Secretary to the Police Commission, Calcutta. Asks for two corrections to be made in the Report of the Commission on British Burma.
8297. Jan - Feb 1861 Letter from Major W C Erskine, Commissioner Jubbulpore Division, Camp. Sends a memorandum of his services in connection with the appointment of a Chief Commissioner for Central India. Copy of reply, should such a post be created, his claims will be considered. See also 8396
8298. Jan 1861 Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner, Cis Sutlej States, Umballa. Reports that there has been very little rain in the plains and though there is little distress as yet, there will be no rubbee. The cities contribute to feed the poor; the English residents everywhere are doing the same. There are Relief Societies in every town of note. The Puttialla and other chiefs have opened their grain stores and are distributing to every Zemindary 25 Maunds of grain to every house. All other articles, except food, have lost value, silver and gold is being sold at 25% below normal price. From Jan to Jul will be terrible. Copy.
