Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8301 to 8330, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 84 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8301 to 8400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8201, 8204, 8205, 8206, 8207, 8208, 8209, 8210, 8212, 8214, 8215, 8216, 8217, 8218, 8219, 8221, 8222, 8223, 8227, and 8229 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

8302. Jan - Feb 1861 Letter from Captain J J Hamilton, Assistant Commissioner 1st class, West Berar, Akola. Accepts with thanks the post of Junior Assistant Commissioner in Mysore. Copy of earlier letter, offering him the post. See also 8153, 8233, 8324
8303. Jan - Feb 1861 Letter from Mr L Ricketts, Assistant Commissioner, Raichore Doab, Lingsagoor. Accepts with thanks the post of Acting Junior Assistant Commissioner in Mysore. Sends correspondence explaining why he accepted an appointment in Hyderabad, which he now has no wish whatever to hold. Five papers. Copy of earlier letter, offering him an appointment; copy of reply.
8304. Jan 1861 Letter from Major W C Erskine, Commissioner of the Jubbulpore Division, Camp. Sends a letter from Messrs Howard Brothers, at Mirzapore (no longer enclosed), offering to convey grain free of charge to Mirzapore from Jubbulpore for the starving poor; Erskine has addressed the Government of the North West on the subject.
8305. Jan - Feb 1861 Letter from Captain B W Ryall, 63rd Native Infantry, District Superintendent 3rd grade, Oudh Police, Oonao. Asks to be promoted to the 2nd grade; sends printed statement of his services, and one other enclosure. Copy of reply, promotions are made on the recommendation of the Chief Commissioner.
8306. Jan - Feb 1861 Letter from Captain W B Peile, late 38th Light Infantry, Dum Dum Recruit Depot, Barrackpore. Asks for the command of a Police Battalion, or any other appointment. Copy of testimonials to Sir E Campbell. Copy of reply, he should apply to the local Governments.

8309. Feb 1861 Letter from Mr J Remfrey, Honorary Secretary, Dalhousie Institute, Calcutta. Acknowledges Lady Canning's donation of 200 Rupees. Copy of earlier letter sending donation.
8310. Feb 1861 Copy of a letter to Mr C K Dove, Post Master General, Calcutta. Giving details of the Governor General's movements, and a list of officers accompanying His Excellency.
8311. Feb 1861 Copy of a letter to Captain Hampton, Commander, 'Ganges', Benares. Asking him to provide accommodation for Mr N Panioty and Baboo Bissermber Sircar, clerks in the Private Secretary's Office, who will proceed in charge of the Office records from Mirzapoor to Rajmahal.
8312. Jan - Feb 1861 Letter from Lieutenant C C Taylor, late 56th Native Infantry, Allahabad. Asks for an interview with the Governor General; wishes to be allowed to do duty with the Central India Horse pending his employment in the Political Department. 8313. Feb 1861 Letter from Mr C R Coles, Officiating Political Agent, Rewah, Camp. Is anxious to settle the Residency question, and as there will be delay in the preparation of estimates suggests the grant of a certain sum be made, and the Engineer be directed to erect the building. Copy of reply, the Governor General is not prepared to sanction at once a sum to be spent on the Residency.
8314. Jan - Feb 1861 Letter from Mr H B Harington, Member of the Legislative Council, Calcutta. States that he has replied by telegram agreeing to the transmission to the Secretary of State of his paper on the amalgamation of the Supreme and Sudder Courts into a High Court of Judicature. Hopes this will be carried out speedily. A code of Civil and Criminal Procedure for the new High Court should be prepared. Telegraph Messages Sent number 885; Telegraph Messages received number 1287.

8316. Jan - Feb 1861 Letter from Mr H Gibson, Adjutant, Baitool Military Police, Baitool. Asks to be allowed the same gratuity as was given to the Military Police on discharge.
8317. Jan - Feb 1861 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Camp, Ubhana. Sends a letter from Major Meade with a message from Scindia offering Meade a present; suggests he give Scindia a scolding. Endorsed: note for reply by Lord Canning. Copy of reply, Shakespear has judged the matter of Scindia and his affront to Meade quite rightly; he should scold Sindia when he next sees him. Meade has behaved very properly.
8318. Feb 1861 Letter from Colonel H Bruce, Secretary, Police Commission, Ballygunge. Forwards a return of the receipts and civil disbursements including Public Works, of the Pegu, Martaban, Tenasserim and Arracan Provinces since the annexation of Pegu. Since annexation Pegu has not nearly paid even its Civil and Public Works expenditure. The Revenue receipts should however continue to increase. A more liberal policy with regard to the Forests and Customs is desirable. He believes that if the opium restrictions were removed, a great quantity would find its way into Western China by the line of the Irrawaddy. Endorsed: note for reply by Lord Canning.

8320. Jan - Feb 1861 Copy of letter to the Private Secretary to Sir C Wood. Informing him that 15 Service Despatches despatched from the Governor General's Camp on 21st January were through the carelessness of the Jubbulpoor Post Office, sent to Benares instead of Bombay, and missed the Mail. They will be sent home by the present Mail from Bombay. Enclosed is an envelope, containing: 1. Memorandum of the Private Secretary's Office asking Secretaries to Government to state what official letters were posted by their offices on 21st January. 2. List of letters sent by the Foreign Department and the Home Department. 3. List of letters sent from the Military Department. 4. List of letters sent from the Public Works Department.
8321. Feb 1861 Letter from Mr C U Aitcheson, Under Secretary to Government with the Governor General, Camp. Forwards the Durbar Accounts for Nov, Dec and Jan (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, returning these.
8322. Feb 1861 Memorandum by C J Wingfield Esquire, Chief Commissioner, Oudh. Proposing a scheme to get rid of the old native Commandants, Adjutants and Rissaldars of Police Corps, and substitute an efficient body of superior Police Officers. This will eventually bring a saving to Government of 1,600 Rupees a month. Endorsed by Lord Canning 'I entirely approve'.
8323. Feb 1861 Letter from Mr E R H Hoff and others, Lucknow. Asking permission to send a deputation to wait on the Governor General from the uncovenanted men who defended the Baillie Guard during the Siege of Lucknow, to ask that the 3 months gratuity awarded them by Sir J Outram (which was deducted from the 12 months Batta awarded them) may be refunded to them. Enclosed is a petition, with signatures, and a copy of the petition.
8324. Jan - Feb 1861 Letter from Captain J J Hamilton, late 2nd Bengal Grenadiers, Khumgar, West Berar. Having lost his appointment in the Hyderabad Commission on the reduction of the Assigned Districts, asks for employment. See also 8153, 8233, 8300, 8301, 8304
8325. Feb 1860 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner, Oudh. Sends two memoranda: 1. Proposing that Mr Currie's claims to succeed to the 2nd vacancy as Deputy Commissioner 1st class be recorded. 2. Proposing a rackets court, baths, and reading room, to be paid for out of the City fines. Copy of reply, the Governor General consents to both these proposals. Private Secretary asks for information about Mr Gordon, Head Clerk of the Commissioner's Office.
8326. Feb 1861 Letter from Mrs F St C Williams, Lucknow. Further to her request that her husband be allowed to do duty in Lucknow, states his services. See also 7975, 7977, 8286, 8714
8327. Feb 1861 Letter from Prince Ramindra Vicram Shah, 3rd Prince of Nepal, Benares. Directs attention to his Memorial of Dec 1860 asking for reward for his loyal services during the Mutiny; he is in a peculiar position owing to the stoppage of his allowance from Nepal.
8328. Feb 1861 Letter from Captain W N Lees, Secretary to the Board of Examiners, Calcutta. Recommends that Government, should give up the collection from the Income Tax in all the distressed districts, devoting it to the relief of the poor; whilst the financial results would be the same as the present mode of relief, the impression made on the people would be far greater.
8329. Feb 1861 Letter from Mr W S Seton Karr, Officiating Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Sends a demi-official letter from Major Verner reporting on the Income Tax in Arracan. The actual collections in Calcutta were upwards of a lakh up to 31st January. Statements of assessment and collections from all districts have been called for. The only instance of an offer of compounding is Dacca, which offers ½ lakh.
8330. Feb 1861 Letter from Captain C Chamberlain. Sends a letter to the Governor General about himself; asks for an interview (Letter no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, returning Sir R Montgomery's letter to Chamberlain, with comments. The Governor General cannot give him an interview upon business which in any way relates to the Oudh Libel case.
