Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8332 to 8370, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 84 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8301 to 8400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8333, 8335, 8336, 8339, 8341, 8345, 8348, 8349, 8354a, 8358, 8360, 8361, 8364, 8369, and 8369a have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
8332. Feb 1861 Letter from Sir H B Frere, President of the Supreme Council of India, Calcutta.Sends a letter from Captain Lees announcing his intention to take leave on medical certificate, and recommending Captain St George as his locum tenens. See also 8334
8333. Jan - Feb 1861 Letter from Major A Fytche, Commissioner, Tenasserim and Martaban Provinces, Moulmein. Returns thanks for his appointment. On assuming office, he found a great deal of excitement among all classes, which is now settling down. The Income Tax was one of their grievances. Hopes his salary will not be further reduced. Observes that the Police in the Martaban Provinces need remodelling, and a strong force is required along the frontier. Intends to go on tour.
8334. Feb 1861 Letter from Captain E St George, Assistant Agent to the Governor General, Rajpootana, Camp, Goorgaum.Accepts the acting appointment in place of Captain Lees. Copy of earlier letter, offering St George the post. Note from Captain Lees. See also 8332
8335. Feb 1861 Letter from Dr J Forsyth, Principal Inspector General, Calcutta. Returns the papers of Assistant Surgeon Fitzgerald's case, he has been placed under the orders of the Deputy Inspector General at Agra (Papers no longer enclosed). Copy of earlier letter, asking Forsyth to arrange the removal of Fitzgerald from Oudh. Private. See also 8382
8336. Feb 1861 Letter from Lieutenant J Bonham, Bengal Artillery, Cawnpore. Asks for political employment, and sends correspondence about his services. Copy of reply, application noted, no vacancy at present.
8337. Feb 1861 Letter from Captain G Hamilton, Assistant Agent to the Governor General for Rajpootana, Camp. Applies to officiate as Political Agent at Bhurtpore in place of Major Bouverie.
8338. Feb 1861 Letter from Mr H C Wake, Civil Service, Maldah. Asks if some letters he sent to Lady Canning have been received. Applies for the post of Superintendent of Darjeeling. Copy of reply, his letters were received. His application will be considered in the event of a vacancy at Darjeeling. See also 7907, 8234, 8992. 8339. Feb 1861 Letter from Dr T Thomson, Superintendent of the Botanic Garden, Calcutta. Sends a statement of certain improvements he considers necessary for the Garden. He believes the Garden comes within the objects to which 1% of the Income Tax is devoted. Copy of reply, the Governor General admits the reasonableness of the requests for the Garden; but Thomson is wrong in supposing that financial pressure is eased. It is impossible to accept any new expense, which is not absolutely indispensable.
8340. Feb 1861 Letter from Mr J Eede, Assistant Civil Auditor, North West Provinces, Allahabad. Sends copies of papers in favour of his claims to promotion. 4 papers.
8341. Feb 1861 Letter from Mr H Stanbrough, Nagpore. Corrects his earlier statement that the Railway Company had accepted his tender for sleepers in the Nagpore Provinces. 1 enclosure. Two ½ anna stamps.

8343. Feb 1861 Letter from Mr W Hudleston, Civil Service, Madras. Recommends his cousin, Lieutenant E Hudleston, 14th Madras Native Infantry, for employment in Mysore. Asks if the Bengal Civilians are making any move to obtain security of their rights in the rapidly approaching extinction of the Civil Service. See also 8344

8348. Feb 1861 Letter from Major E K Elliot, Commissioner of Nagpore, Camp, Chindwarah. In reply, will send a Memorandum on the expediency of amalgamating the Jubbulpore Division with the Nagpore Territory. Copy of earlier letter, asking for this Memorandum. See also 8384
8349. Feb 1861 Letter from Mr A O Hume, Magistrate and Collector of Etawah. Asks where he erred about the Mysore grant, about which he was particularly careful. Copy of earlier letter, thanking him for his paper the 'People's Friend'; there is a point about the Mysore grant which requires investigation in Calcutta.
8350. Feb 1861 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh. Suggests Lieutenant W Stanley Clarke, 3rd European Lieutenant Cavalry, as Superintendent of Police 3rd grade. Copy of reply, Clarke has been appointed. See also 8484
8352. Feb - Mar 1861 Letter from Mr J H Gordon, Head Clerk, Commissioner 's Office, Lucknow Division, Lucknow. Renews his application for a civil appointment; sends printed copy of testimonials. 8354a. Feb 1861 Letter from Lieutenant R C W Mitford, Adjutant 2nd Regiment, Hodson's Horse, Gondah, Oudh. Says that for his services in 1858 at Jubrowlee, Lord Clyde recommended him for the Victoria Cross. The recommendation was returned to India for further particulars, and now the matter rests with the Governor General. ½ anna stamp. Note from General Birch. Copy of reply, the matter rests with the Secretary of State.

8358. Feb 1861 Letter from Mr A O Hume, Magistrate and Collector of Etawah. Asks for copies of the Orders about Durbars for publication in the Prijahit. Asks if copies of his papers have reached the Governor General. ½ anna stamp. Copy of reply, the translations of the Governor General's speeches at Jubbulpoor have already appeared in the North West Provinces Gazette. Private Secretary sends copies of an address to the Oudh Talookdars.

8360. Feb 1861 Letter from Major P A P Bouverie, Political Agent, Bhurtpore. Having heard from General Lawrence that he (Lawrence) had recommended Lieutenant Impey to act at Bhurtpore, and Lieutenant Walters at Ulwar, on the ground that Impey had not got on well with the young Maharajah, states reasons against this arrangement.
8361. Feb 1861 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. States that there is no vacancy in the Commission at present for Lieutenant Ramsay. The Oudh Gazette has translated the Governor General's speech to the Talookdars and much detracted from its effect. Copy of earlier letter, about Ramsay. See also 8357

8364. Feb 1861 Letter from Major R P Anderson, late 25th Native Infantry, Barrackpore. Forwards a copy of his Analysis of the Gulistan of Shaik Sady (Enclosed). If the Governor General approves, asks him to direct Anderson to prepare other similar analyses, or grant him a suitable appointment. Sends also printed copies of his translation of the 'History of Bahadur Shah'. (Part only). 1 anna stamp. 8368. Feb 1861 Letter from Captain W D Dickson, 3rd Bombay Native Infantry, Malligaum. As his regiment is likely to return to India in a few months from Canton, asks to be allowed to join the appointment in the North West that His Excellency conferred on him in November 1857 as soon as he can obtain leave from the Commander-in-Chief to make over charge of the Depot with which he was left. Copy of reply, he must wait until his regiment returns to India; the future of the Thuggee Department is uncertain. See also 6332, 8530, 8550
