Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8401 to 8450, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 85 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8401 to 8450’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8407, 8408, 8412, 8413, 8415, 8418, 8419, 8423, 8424, 8432, 8439, 8441, 8442, 8443, 8444, and 8446 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
8401. Feb 1861 Letter from Colonel G St P Lawrence, Agent to the Governor General for Rajpootana, Ajmere. Suggests a replacement for Captain St George, naming Lieutenant Bruce, Lieutenant Wimberley or Lieutenant Walcott. Hopes that neither Major Lloyd nor Captain Dennys will get Bhurtpore, for though Lieutenant Walter is young for a Political Agent, he could not well be passed over. Major Bouverie's management of Bhurtpore has not been very satisfactory. Copy of reply, Lieutenant Bruce has been appointed in place of Captain St George. See also 8149, 8276, 8461, 8399, 8400, 8402

8405. Feb - Mar 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel R R W Ellis, late Political Agent for Bundelcund, Calcutta. Asks to be restored to the Political Department, mentions Bhurtpore. Copy of reply, arrangements have already been made to fill the Bhurtpore vacancy.
8406. Mar 1861 Letter from Maharajah Duleep Sing, Calcutta. Asks if the Private Secretary has spoken to the Governor General about the Maharajah travelling up-country. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, Major Bowie will call upon the Maharajah when His Highness wishes, to speak to him about his visit to the Upper Provinces.
8407. Feb - Apr 1861 Letter from Mr C B Thornhill, Commissioner of Allahabad. Has despatched a sketch of the Cawnpore Memorial Garden. Asks how he should proceed to apply for a re-consideration of his claims for a deputation allowance for having officiated as Secretary, North West Provinces Government. Copy of reply, the Governor General regrets he cannot grant the deputation allowance. See also 8577
8408. Feb - Mar 1861 Letter from Rajah Rundheer Sing, Rajah of Kuppoorthulla. Has explained his wishes to the Lieutenant Governor following Private Secretary's advice. Has seen Rajah Teja Sing, who is looking well.
8409. Feb - Mar 1861 Letter from Major General Armstrong, Madras Army, Bangalore. Asks for his son, Lieutenant E Armstrong, 11th Madras Native Infantry, to be appointed to the Mysore Commission. Copy of reply. His Excellency regrets he cannot comply with this request at present, but the application is noted. See also 9682

8411. Mar 1861 Letter from Mr J N Bullen, Calcutta. Acknowledges receipt of a draft resolution about cotton, he will call upon the Governor General as requested. He will convey the Governor General's wishes to Mr Kilburn, and invite Mr Hurst, the representative in Calcutta of the Manchester Cotton Supply Association. See also 8410
8412. Mar 1861 Letter from Mr T Oldham, Superintendent of the Geological Survey, Calcutta. Sends an extract from a letter from Colonel Drummond reporting the successful commencement of operations in the Kumaon Iron Works.

8415. Feb - Mar 1861 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner, Oudh, Lucknow. States that Nawab Mahomed Reza Khan Kuzzilbush is very anxious to obtain a perpetual settlement of the grant of money and land made him for procuring the release of the prisoners in Kabul. He also wishes to commute his life pension for land. Copy of reply, the Governor General thinks that the question of a permanent settlement should be inaugurated generally, and not for individuals; a matter of general policy, and not individual reward. If Wingfield feels the time has come for such a settlement, the Governor General will write officially. Does he think the settlements should be made by District Officers, or by regular settlement officers? Should the settlements be for 30 years as in the North West Provinces, or longer? See also 8467

8424. Feb - Mar 1861 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner, Oudh, Lucknow. Will write later officially about Major Boileau's appointment. Reports on Mr Gordon. States that he has reduced the Police Sowars to 1,000 of all ranks, and since 1 Jan 1861 has saved 185,000 Rupees in Police expenditure. See also 8352, 8370

8427. Mar 1861 Letter from Captain J Hearsey, 38th Native Infantry, Aide-de-Camp to General Hearsey, Fort William. Wished an interview with the Governor General to ask for another appointment before April when General Hearsey leaves for England. Asks to be made Secretary to the Board of Examiners. 8441. Feb - Mar 1861 Letter from Dr H L Williams, Officiating Residency Surgeon, Indore. With reference to Sir R Shakespear's letter to the Private Secretary, explains his conduct. Copy of reply, the Governor General has agreed that Dr Brodrick should be appointed Residency Surgeon. His Excellency does not question Williams' professional reputation, but in view of the personal character of the appointment, believes the officer holding it must enjoy the entire confidence of the Resident. 8443. Feb - Mar 1861 Letter from Colonel Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, en route to Indore. Sends a letter from Dr Williams and explains why he recommended Dr Brodrick as Residency Surgeon in preference to Williams. When Shakespear was ill in the autumn of 1860, Williams went out on a pleasure party without leaving any address; Shakespear sent for him, but he could not be found.
