Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8501 to 8550, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 86 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8501 to 8550’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8501, 8503, 8504, 8509, 8510, 8514, 8517, 8518, 8519, 8520, 8525, 8526, 8529, 8532, 8533, 8534, 8535, 8536, 8537, 8539, 8540, 8543, 8544, and 8545 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

8503. Mar 1861 Letter from Major W C Erskine, Commissioner, Jubbulpore Division. Observes that he must look to Calcutta, not the Lieutenant Governor, for the increase of his Deputy Commissioner's pay. See also 8396, 8487
8504. Mar 1861 Letter from Colonel C Davidson, Resident at Hyderabad. Brings to notice the services of Dr G Smith while attached to the Hyderabad Residency; refers to a Memorandum sent earlier with the Report on the Hyderabad Medical School. He wishes to be nominated Honourable Physician to the Queen. Copy of reply, the Governor General recognizes the good services of Dr Smith, but cannot promise that his request will be complied with.
8505. Mar 1861 Letter from Captain W N Lees, Secretary to the Board of Examiners, Calcutta. Writes on behalf of Moulvee Abdul Leeteef, late Principal, Sudder Ameen of Goruckpore, who is about to petition the Governor General. He was said to be disloyal during the rebellion of 1857. 8508. Mar 1861 Telegraph Messages from Mr R Viccajee, Assistant Commissioner, Raichore Doab, Hyderabad. Asks for employment, has sent a Memorial to the Governor General. Copy of reply, application noted, no vacancies at present. He should also apply to the Commissioners of Mysore and Nagpore. Endorsed: Colonel Davidson's opinion of the writer. See also 8531, 8541
8509. Mar 1861 Copy of a letter to Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Asking for information about the subscriptions raised in Oudh for the famine districts, and what proportion was given by which Talookdars. See also 8785
8510. Mar 1861 Letter from Captain J R Pughe, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, Alipore. Sends a paper about the right of appointment to the Superintendency of the Botanic Gardens. If the Lieutenant Governor were to appoint, he would nominate Dr Anderson. Copy of reply, the Governor General thinks that the Lieutenant Governor should nominate on this occasion; Anderson is the most suitable candidate. See also 7887
8511. Mar 1861 Letter from Mrs A Sharp, Barrackpore. Asks to be allowed to live at the Halfway Bungalow. Copy of reply, request refused. See also 7988
8512. Mar 1861 Letter from Lord W Hay, Deputy Commissioner, Simla. Says he has applied officially for the Simla Volunteers to be allowed to retain the short Enfield, in spite of the order that volunteers were to be supplied with long Enfields. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his letter has been sent to the Military Department.
8513. Mar 1861 Letter from Mr W S Halsey, Joint Magistrate and Deputy Collector, Mirzapore. Says he has been ordered to England by the doctors, and asks whether he could apply for half salary during his absence. Mr Edmonstone cannot grant him leave on private affairs because of the notification of autumn 1860 about furloughs. Copy of reply, the Governor General regrets he cannot make any exceptions of this kind. Perhaps Edmonstone might send up a strong recommendation. See also 8548
8514. Mar 1861 Letter from Rajah Rundheer Singh of Kuppoorthulla. Asks to be allowed to give a present to Lieutenant Chamier. Copy of reply, His Excellency must reluctantly decline to make any exception to the rule.
8515. Mar 1861 Letter from Mr F Cooper, Deputy Commissioner, Delhi. Applies for the post of Deputy Commissioner Simla. Copy of reply, the request will be borne in mind.
8516. Mar 1861 Letter from Lieutenant A N Bruce, Assistant Agent to the Governor General for the States of Rajpootana, Camp, near Ajmere. Returns thanks for his appointment. ½ anna stamp. See also 8402
8517. Mar 1861 Letter from Captain O J McL Farrington, Deputy Commissioner, Umritsur. Says that though unwilling to reopen the question of his late wife's death, he feels conscious of being the cause of Dr De Renzy's error, and hopes that De Renzy may now be forgiven, and found some suitable employment. Copy of reply, as the affair became the subject of an official investigation, the Governor General regrets that nothing further can be done.
8518. Mar - Apr 1861 Letter from Lieutenant J G Bell, Assistant Commissioner in East Berar, Oomrawattee. Has appealed against his supercession in connection with the recent changes in the Hyderabad Assigned Districts. Copy of reply, the question has been referred to Colonel Davidson, and the Governor General is quite satisfied with his reply about the alleged supercession. See also 8534, 8536
8519. Mar 1861 Letter from Mr A O Hume, Magistrate and Collector of Etawah. Sends two copies of a letter addressed to the Lieutenant Governor North West Provinces, urging strong objections to the new Police scheme, and containing suggestions for a far less objectionable one. (Printed)

8523. Mar 1861 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Says that Major Boileau has declined the appointment of Officiating Deputy Commissioner at Hurdui as he intends to buy the estate granted to Captain J Hearsey. Boileau has been warned that if he possesses landed property, he must give up his situation in the Police and his Commission in the Army. See also 8524
8525. Mar 1861 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Reports that the civilian defenders of the Residency are much disappointed at being excluded from the Prize money according to the terms of the warrant, and urges their claims. They believe the Government may make them a grant from the Imperial Revenue. Copy of reply, the warrant will not be altered, but any Memorial will receive favourable consideration.

8527. Feb - Mar 1861 Letter from Lieutenant W R Shakespear, late 1st Assistant Agent to the Governor General for Central India, on leave, England. Asks to be nominated to the Bengal Staff Corps under the new warrant. Explains why he was obliged to overstay his leave.
8528. Mar 1861 Letter from Shaik Abdoollah Khan, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Private Secretary. Copy of reply, arranging interview.
8529. Mar 1861 Letter from Captain R N Taylor, 17th Native Infantry, Madras. Renews his request for employment, mentions Mysore. See also 8299, 8388, 8945; Governor General's Book Number 1643
8530. Mar 1861 Letter from Captain W D Dickson, 3rd Bombay Native Infantry, Mallegaum. Has been told he will shortly be relieved of the Depot, and intends to proceed to Agra as Assistant Superintendent of Thuggee. Wishes to be transferred to the new Staff Corps. See also 8368, 8550

8532. Mar 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J Laughton, Engineers, Umballa. Sends a Memorandum suggesting the construction of a road for wheeled vehicles, or of tramways, to facilitate the transport of cotton from the agricultural districts to the nearest sea ports. Wooden tramways might be used. Copy of reply, asking him for an estimate of the cost. See also 8639
8533. Mar 1861 Letter from Major C R Hervey, General Superintendent, Thuggee and Dacoitee, Jubbulpore. Having already suggested the measures to supersede the Thuggee Department, recommends for the favourable notice of Government Captain Chamberlain, Major Thornhill and Captain MacAndrew, Captain Hastings, Mr Hearn, Captain Ranken, Lieutenant Fraser and Lieutenant Ward, Lieutenant Walcott and Captain Dickson, and suggests posts for some of these. Wishes for a Police appointment for himself. States his services. See also 9338

Asks to be appointed to the Joint Medical Charge of Simla; explains why he was removed from the post of Superintendent of Vaccination at Simla. Two letters. 8536. Mar - Apr 1861 Letter from Colonel C Davidson, Resident at Hyderabad. Explains the question of the seniority of Captain Stubbs and Lieutenant Bell in the Hyderabad Commission. The territorial transfers have nearly all been completed, except in East and West Berar. Two papers. Copy of earlier letter asking for information about Captain Stubbs' alleged supercession. 8537. Mar - Apr 1861 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. In reply, states that he would prefer remaining at Indore until October and would prefer Hyderabad to Mysore. Sends a letter for the Governor General (no longer enclosed). Copy of earlier letter, asking him to telegraph his reply to an offered appointment. The salary of the Commissioner of Mysore is 4083, with a travelling allowance of 5.8 per day while marching. 8538. Mar 1861 Copy of a letter to Lieutenant Colonel H Yule, Calcutta. Asking for information about a company of Sappers, which was ordered from Jhansi to Nagpore. See also 8466, 8597
8539. Mar 1861 Letter from Mr F Wilson, Mussoorie. Having seen in one of the English papers that the experiment for breeding the Himalayan pheasants sent to the Royal Zoological Society in England has been only partially successful, asks if his letter of May 1857 about the rearing and breeding of the birds has been received by the Governor General. Copy of reply, his letter was received. The Governor General does not at present intend to take any further steps in the matter. See also 1802, 2109, 2199
8540. Mar 1861 Letter from Mr C A Elliott, Oonao. Having been informed demi-officially that he is to be removed from the Oudh Commission to the North West Provinces, protests against the move; asks for Mr Yule's opinion to be taken.
