Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8551 to 8600, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 86 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8551 to 8600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8552, 8553, 8554, 8555, 8562, 8563, 8566, 8567, 8568, 8569, 8570, 8571, 8577, 8580, 8581, 8583, 8584, 8585, 8586, 8590, 8594, 8596, 8597, 8599, and 8600 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

8552. Apr 1861 Letter from Mr C T Buckland, Civil and Sessions Judge of Hooghly. Sends two copies of Reports of two cases of torture by the Police. Says that a few copies have gone to England (Printed Reports). Copy of reply, asking to whom the Reports were sent in England, and by whom they are expected to be published. See also 8594, 8612
8553. Mar 1861 Letter from Mr E D Kilburn, of Messrs Schoene Kilburn and Company, Calcutta. States that he is about to propose to Messrs Rothschild, an arrangement to be offered to Sir Charles Wood; that is, with reference to their usual business with India, the silver which they remit would be placed at the disposal of the Government of India bearing interest, and repayable in India towards the close of the year.
8554. Mar 1861 Letter from Moonshee Mohun Lall, Agra. Writes further to his request for confiscated lands. Is suprised to see in the Sunnuds granted in Oudh, the old title of Nawab and suggests the name of the Viceroy should supersede all old titles.

8556. Mar 1861 Letter from Mr H B Goodall, Deputy Collector, in charge of Government Steam Agency, Mirzapore. Advises despatch of some statues received from Jubbulpore for the Governor General. Copy of reply, sending payment for shipping charges. See also 8420, 8437
8557. Mar 1861 Letter from Conductor W Allsopp, Officiating Superintendent, Government Park, Barrackpore. Sends a letter from the Reverend Mr Coley, asking for some flowers for the decoration of the church at Barrackpore. Asks to be allowed to use some plants for an exhibition.
8558. Mar - Apr 1861 Letter from Mr C Currie, Officiating Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Asks to be confirmed in his post, from the date of the vacancy. Copy of reply, he will be confirmed, but his appointment is unlikely to be antedated.
8559. Apr 1861 Letter from Baboo Denonauth Chongder, Ramkristopore. Applies for employment in the Private Secretary's Office. Three papers. Copy of reply, there are no vacancies.

8562. Apr 1861 Letter from Brigadier W M Coghlan, on special duty, Calcutta. Believes it would be advisable not to be too definite in prescribing a period for the payment of the arrears of the subsidy by the rulers of Muscat and Zanzibar; it would suffice if the Governor General were to state that he expects the terms of his decision to be carried out without unnecessary delay. Copy of earlier letter, asking for his opinion about the payment of the arrears of subsidy amounting to 80,000 Crowns.
8563. Apr 1861 Letter from Captain J Rennie, Superintendent of Marine, Calcutta. Reports that the Indian Naval officer stationed in Calcutta is not able to say on what particular survey the 'Euphrates' is engaged, but will telegraph to Bombay for the information.

8565. Apr 1861 Letter from Captain R C Wroughton, Assistant Commissary General, Fort William. Acknowledges receipt of 10 camel trunks, which will be reserved for the Private Secretary's next Indent. Copy of earlier letter, sending the trunks.

Things are better than he expected, some rent is being paid, but it is slack in most quarters owing to the unsettled state of the ryots. Thinks Mr Hills will so embroil himself in the Courts that he will not be able to get himself straight again. To Mr Grey. Copy
8570. Apr 1861 Letter from Mr E Prestwich, merchant and agent, Calcutta. Sends two letters from Mr Larmour describing an outrage at Narainpore in the Kotgarrah concern, committed by a ringleader in the present combination and 20 of his gang (Letters no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, his papers have been transferred to the Home Secretary.

8584. Apr 1861 Letter from Mr R H Davies, Secretary to the Government of the Punjab, Lahore. Asks if the Maharajah of Cashmere may have the Treaty between himself and the British Government engraved on copper, and acknowledged by the Punjab Government. Will reply shortly about the Kot Qasim Pergunnah more fully; the villages have not been made over to Jeypore because Mr Ford maintains they do not belong to Kot Qasim. Copy of earlier letter, about the villages in Kot Kasim. Copy of reply, the Governor General has no objection to the engraving of the Treaty on copper, but His Excellency does not think it should be attested by the Punjab Government, as to do so might throw doubt on the validity of the paper copy. In reply, names Lieutenant Colonel Hennessy, 70th Bengal Native Infantry, and Major J T Murray, 71st Bengal Native Infantry, as fit successors to Major Meade. Having heard that his appointment is shortly to be abolished, asks to be appointed to the charge of the Flotilla, or made Controller of the Dockyards. Two papers. 8597. Apr 1861 Letter from Major E K Elliot, Commissioner of Nagpore, Seetabuldee. Says that the present uncertainty about impending changes is causing trouble in the Province. His Police scheme, for instance, cannot be completed until the amalgamation is decided one way or the other. Uncertainty about the Public Works Department is delaying progress in road building. Wishes for a qualified Secretary instead of a Personal Assistant. Complains of not being allowed the company of Sappers from Gwalior. Would like to make each Presidency contribute a company for Nagpore. Has received in a confidential form a copy of the papers on the financial position, and will shortly reply to it. Also copy of this letter.
8598. Apr 1861 Letter from Major S R Tickell, Deputy Commissioner Moulmein, Calcutta. In reply, wishes an interview to better his position in his Department and to give information about the timber trade of the Tenasserim Provinces, and the statistics generally of the country. See also 8587
8599. Apr 1861 Letter from Mr W Seton Karr, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Asks if Mr Eden may be allowed to keep a Bhootia costume, some flannel and scarves for himself and several of the officers, given by the Rajah of Sikkim. Copy of reply, the Governor General has no objection.
8600. Apr 1861 Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Officiating Secretary to Government Foreign Department, Calcutta. Asks to be allowed to resign his post owing to bad health.
